I think you can turn off loot anims in FC4. There is an option for it somewhere.

This was what was pitched back in the original funding rounds. The concept for E:D was just that:An up to date version of Elite, a solo game. No one has mentioned yet that Croberts wanted that an NPC will treat your character like a hobo if you character did not take a bath because he wants to justify the showers in the ship. And you should have manners when talking to an NPC by that you should not look away if the npc is talking because they have feelings.

Its been a long time since i lost a ship in E:D (i mostly do trucking or run the void in E:D and go in Arena when i feel the mood for PvP) so the death mechanism might have been modified in a later patch. If thats the case then its just better. The important idea is that the death penality in Elite is proportional to the wealth you choose to put in risk on the mission, allowing player agenda on the risk vs reward mechanics.
