i recommend googling for .screenrc/tmux.conf files. that way you can have a usable configuration up front without having to write it yourself.

I have a terminal tab for the editor for a project, and then just live in there. Next tabs are used for REPLs and runnning tests and managing git and poo poo. If I work on the same project a lot of times, I save the whole config in a tmux file that auto-sets up may work environment for a given project for the next time.

uhhhh vim can pass commands to the shell and show you the output without quitting the editor. you can even automatically put the contents of stdout into the file you're editing why would you exit a text editor, even a bad one
