It seems like the good resorts for our situation would be The Wynn, MGM Grand, or the Palazzo? I've found a pretty decent deal on the Palazzo. Should I rent a car at the airport/resort or rely on Uber if we want to tour a few of the big casinos on the strip?

Those hotels are fine based on what you have said. You can walk the strip unless you are 500 pounds or something.

I love the Grand but it isn't on the same level as Wynn/Palazzo.

Strip is walkable. If it gets too hot there is monorail and uber / cabs.

Rent a car for stuff like Hoover drat / Red Rock Canyon.

Hm so My Wife and I are thinking of going back to Vegas maybe next year, or perhaps earlier, and our current thought is to fly in, rent a Jeep and drive to the Mojave National Preserve to camp a few nights followed by a return to Vegas to stay a few more nights inside an actual building. Has anyone done something like this before?

Kabuto if you're feeling frisky and want to head off strip or Sen Of Japan which is my personal favorite. Nobu, Yellowtail, Sushi Samba, are all great options on strip. Costa Di Mare is Italian with a lot of seafood based dishes and REALLY good

Yellowtail. My wife doesn't eat sushi....and yet someone Yellowtail was good enough that it convinced her sushi is awesome.

Something similar sure. Whats the question about it? Sounds like fun, but checking a lot of camping gear through the airline seems like a bit of a pain in the rear end, unless you are used to camping really light. We rented a jeep and drove from home (denver).

Yeah this is part of the issue. We did check a bunch of camping gear when we went on our honeymoon last year (including a short stay in Vegas, downtown, which was a mistake, and a great drive through the Mojave which was too short) and it turned out...okay. I guess the trick would be just to pack light for both segments of the trip.

I'm wondering if there are places in or near Vegas that rent real off-road vehicles and don't mind if they get a little dirty or dinged up, since we'd want to drive in some of the areas that are basically inaccessible unless you have a serious 4x4.

We took a hertz jeep through some serious stuff in moab and all over pismo beach sand dunes in CA and didn't get hassled either time. Didn't have any big dings though. Can always take it through a car wash and vacuum before return if its looking really bad.

Fox in vegas rents wranglers as well, and it'll probably be pre-dinged there.

Jay where do you think the best daily/nightly poker tournaments are in terms of value? Looking at buy-ins of roughly $200 or less. Last time I went I only played cash, but I've started getting interested in tournaments as well.

Honestly, no clue. I think the Aria one is in that range but I couldn't tell you for sure and I don't know about the Venetian, Bellagio, or Wynn but those are the best card rooms.

Don't rent a car if you're going to stay at MGM. They (and all their subsidiary properties) are charging for parking.

Wynn noon tournaments are the best in town for rake (11%), plus the structure and starting stack are really good. Definitely worth a look. Mon through Thursday is a lot cheaper ($140) than the weekend ($225 + $100 add-on), but still worth it.

Aria dailies are sort of a weird beast. Mon through Thursday, the 1pm at $125 is a good value. Friday to Sunday is 11am at $240. They have a 7pm that theoretically runs every night, but they cancel it without notice if they need the tables for cash games. Also, they sometimes get 70+ players and only have 3 tables open. So either get there early or prepare to be an alternate on a long-rear end list.

We don't go to Venetian. Sheldon Adelson has proven himself to be a scourge on the city and people need to stop giving him money. Fun fact: When he was the third richest man in the world, he used to answer the phone as "Sheldon the Third". If that's not the doucheist thing you've ever heard, I don't know what is.

Bellagio has a super nice room, awesome dealers, and the service is spectacular. Their daily tournaments are, unfortunately, loving dogshit. They run at 5pm and no one goes.

Caesars dailies vary in buy-in and value, but overall they're a pretty solid option.

If you're here over a weekend, the Friday night at Orleans is the nut-best in town. It's filled with regs who basically play with their hands face up. $125 buy-in and 150+ players is a slow night.

If you bust from any of these early and just want "gently caress it" poker, the 10pm at TI is pretty solid. $75 entry, $1000 guarantee prize pool, and no one gives a poo poo. It's the most exploitable game out there.

This is exceptionally good advice along with everything else you said. I would just like to add that the Friday night tournament at the Orleans is in a hot, low ceiling room where the air seems regulated to be at least 40% cigarette smoke. I was literally a smoker for 5 years and it was too much for me.

Wow, talk about douchey. I didn't even realize it was him who owned the place, although my family has been avoiding/boycotting The Venetian for about a decade due to a poor customer service experience. Now I have another reason to avoid the place.

You don't have to like Sheldon personally but when he was looking to build the big rear end Venetian in Macau and there was no available land, he just said "gently caress it" and did a bunch of land reclamation and made his own strip which is pretty loving boss to me.

In mid-April myself and 8 other guys are going to Vegas to get away from the wives and stuff and hang out. We're thinking about getting one big suite as our hang out/poo poo talk spot and 4 regular rooms. Think we can get a discounted rate for our group? We haven't decided what hotel yet, but we know we want to stay on the strip and we don't want to blow a ton of money on the rooms if we don't have to. Any hotel suggestions? Ideally a place that has a suite with a big enough room for us all to hang out in when we're not on the casino floor. We're gonna play poker and stuff but we're not all big gamblers or anything.

You'd need more rooms to get a group discount from a hotel on rooms. I (shameless plug) have a website that gives discounted rates on rooms though. https://www.jayfarberlv.com

Seconding the Rollin Smoke suggestion. For buffets, I liked Bacchanal at Caesar's and Wicked Spoon at Cosmo. I've also heard good things about Aria's and Bellagio's. You're looking at $50 a pop though at each one. Can't help you on the seafood.

I don't think so, at least not within walking distance. Try searching for the nearest Smith's, Albertson's, or Vons from wherever you're staying. There are Walgreens and CVS on the Strip that will probably have overpriced basics.
