Nevermind. Google is now telling me that it was a toy line called Sky Commanders. I vaguely remember the cartoon, but seeing the toys brings back the memory of the one I had. Dunno why I thought it was Captain Power. Time is a bitch I guess.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Commanders

Cable Cannon was the one I had. I now remember that the missile never shot right unless the string was as tight as possible and it was hard to keep the slack out unless you had it set up just right. Still think I had at least one Captain Power figure, but maybe that's my memory reminding me that I wanted one back then.

Man, Kenner was the poo poo back in the day. So many good toys (Star Wars!)

That was a long time ago, but there was a stats post by Lowtax or Radium showing breakdown by user agent. There was one WebTv entry and the user was banned because "who uses webtv" according to ancient lore.

To be fair, Radium was a piece of poo poo and I kinda feel sorry for the webTV person. I've got a feeling that webTV wasn't that persons only access; like maybe he or she was at their grandparents house or something at the time and didn't have any other way to browse the forums (pretty sure that story was before smartphones were a major thing), although nobody that I recall has come forward to admit it was them, so I assume whoever it was didn't rereg out of humiliation if anything.

Or they could've had a perfectly normal computer, but just wanted to dick around with a WebTV for fun. I could see myself doing that.

Pre-2005 or so. So before smartphones and macbooks started to make a resurgence in like 2006 or whatever when they switched to Intel.

e: As far as I can remember. Or sometime around there. I might be off though because Macs are still only like 8% of computers sold.

How does that work with the digital changeover.

Do they run an out from a set top converter to the VCR to the TV???

Same as you could before the digital changeover.

Split the signal from the cable box to the VCR via coax and use video cables or coax to hook it up to the TV. You can pick up everything on the cable box through Channel 3 or 4/L1 or L2.

They actually found a VCR that understands digital channels. It also has a (somewhat temperamental) DVD player built in.

I've offered to set them up with something more modern, but they're happy with what's worked for them for decades now. And hey, it DOES work for them, so who am I to judge?

I was recording TV with a VCR until June of 2015. I just ran the cable box's coax out to the VCR and made sure my cable box was on the channel I wanted to record before I went to work. I find it funny that my parents were rocking a DVR before me.

If I had any tapes, I'd still be doing that.
The TV in my room is a CRT. Running a set top box with component out to an AVR (that does s-video/composite upscaling too) with switched component hooked up to the CRT component in.
It's mainly for old gaming consoles but I have a STB/DVD hooked up for when I can't sleep or wake up at 3AM.
I've got no recording devices though and $0 money for upgrades.
I've kept an old VCR because I have a few classic movies or tv series.
If I had any blank tapes I'd be using them because why not?

E: I'm a monster though because when the internal tuner to my old 32" LCD TV died I hooked up an external STB using a composite cable. Unlike the decent STB in my room, this newer STB only has HDMI and composite, no component. (HDMI doesn't work on some channels for some reason, I guess that's why someone gave it to me free)

I remember that happening and counted myself lucky that I didn't get banned, since I had been dicking around on a Dreamcast the day before and logged into SA with it.

Also i just googled the Dreamcast broadband adapter and really wish I hadn't sold mine for about a fiver a decade ago.

My parents made a slow transition from VCR to DVD-VCR to DVD-HDD, and then we realised a few years later that we still had all the old VHS tapes in the attic including childhood memories. Luckily most people around here are slow upgraders (our town has two video rental stores, though they have at least moved to DVD/Blu-Ray) so someone just picked up a secondhand VCR instead of paying for proper conversions since the original recordings are garbage anyway. We still have it "just in case", and there's still a few local stores I could buy new tapes from if I really wanted. It took me about five years to part with an Macintosh SE/30 that I didn't even have a mouse or keyboard for, so the VCR will be probably hanging around for a while.

Also, that bit earlier about Sky Commander/etc reminded me I have a bunch of toys that I promised another thread I'd take some pictures of, so thanks! Mine aren't tech relics though, except in the sense of being forgotten on the internet.

By the time I got my Dreamcast Sega was in the painful process of giving up on it so I couldn't find a broadband adapter anywhere near me and it was sold out on the Sega online store never to return, so I ran pppd on my home router and "dialed in" with a physical phone cord connection.

It was tons of fun browsing my favorite forums of the day with it, even if it felt like it took forever to write "HAY GUYS IM POSTING ON MY DREAMCAST" with the onscreen keyboard.

Has sega channel been covered yet? Because that was the poo poo when I was in I like 12.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Channel

Basically it was a really, really early steam/xbox live/psn/gamefly. You had about 30 games a month you could play that changed every month for like $15, but they were mostly pretty bad as it was the end of the genesis's life but for 12 year old me it was amazing.

It also apparently had a hand in killing the Saturn because paying per month for games was more economical than paying like $500 for a new system and games for parents. I remember that it would sometimes take for ever to download the rom into the cart over cable, which is absurd now that I understand how it works and how small the rom files were.

Sega was the Nazi Germany of gaming super weapons in the 90's.
