The Wonder Years look a long time to get any home video release owing to music rights. UK shows have an interesting quirk where they're allowed to pick bits out of the BBC music library, which has a ton of commercial songs, but that cannot get used on their DVDs.

The UK Ad standard authority did get Activision to pull ads for Call of Duty 2 back in 2006 citing that pre-rendered footage cannot be used in a manner that suggests actual gameplay. I think this was the ad that was pulled.

However they dropped their investigation from No Man's Sky, unless there's another active lawsuit that's still going. I think SEGA/Gearbox god away with the Colonial Marines debacle as the class action suit was dropped in 2015 and unless the plaintiffs are following up with some other deal nothing's seemed to have been reported since.

Music licensing is great. I bought the Daria DVD set and it has a letter in it about how when they made the show the thought of selling the show wasn't even a thing so they didn't get the home video rights and now it would be cost prohibitive to get them so the solution was to just strip all the music from the show and replace it with generic stuff.

The BBC has a special license that means that they can use any music they like, without additional fees, for domestic use. That means that Top Gear can use any music they like, without issue.

When other stations or DVDs want to play an episode of TG, they have to negotiate all the rights for all these tracks individually, perhaps at higher costs. They usually opt for the cheaper version of using alternative tracks.

Thus, this clever segment:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aY1QSQ31KM

Makes little sense when viewed on other channels, as they had to remove 'Money' and hence the entire point of it.

It's also bad in subtle ways. When James arrives in this scene (on the non-BBC transmitted version), you may wonder at the odd incidental music they chose:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf7q8lWEd-o&t=82s

That because they weren't allowed to use this music, which was the theme tune to a classic comedy programme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA9IQycyMX4

Famously, the main character, a hapless fool, drove an Austin Princess. But with the theme musics, the entire joke at James's expense disappears.

I remember the worst one of these. I think the Vietnam special where there was a running joke about a bike decked out in American flags and stickers with the horn set to play a snippet of "Born in the USA". When I saw it on BBC America the Springsteen song was replaced by something generic and the whole joke was lost.

If I remember correctly when WKRP was released on DVD as a boxed set all of the music was replaced with garbage tracks. Unsurprisingly when they licensed the good tunes for the TV show, no one ever thought that they would be releasing it for sale later and so never secured rights for the music for later use. If you remember WKRP, they played lots and lots of popular music. I believe a later release of the DVD got music rights I have no concept how.

The best is when the Netflix version of a show cheaps out on licensed music but uses subtitles from the DVD so randomly you get the lyrics for a song that isn't playing while generic track #7 plays.

For what it's worth, I don't think Overwatch's character designs are that great. They've done a good job giving the characters pretty distinctive silhouettes and personalities, which is great, but when you look at the fine details of the actual characters and the clothes they wear I hate how much meaningless 'tech' details there are, just a bunch of messy armour plates and little techno-details that just busy the image and don't mean anything.

Freaks and Geeks is another example that didn't initially get the licenses for the songs for later sale, only with that show they ended up getting them all. It's why it took so long for a Freaks and Geeks box set to come out.

That said, F&G only has 18 episodes so it would have been much easier than a lot of other shows.

I think music licensing also hosed with the Drew Carey show. They released the first season or two, but everything else is locked up. I guess they could release it without the opening credits...but those were really good opening credits.

Yeah, Moon Over Parma is the theme for the first season, but they couldn't secure the rights for Five o'Clock World and Cleveland Rocks used for the rest of the seasons.

It's a real shame, because the Drew Carey show aged pretty well for that weird mid-90s vintage of sitcom.

Correct. Recordings for sync (which is the you're off license for video use) are administered individually by rights holders (usually the record label) but composition and lyrics are mostly handled by ASCAP/BMI or the Harry Fox Agency.

IANAL I just deal with this stuff a lot.

Battleborn could have an entire thread dedicated to its general bad management, but Gearbox itself has been trying very hard to lose any and all goodwill that people have towards it as a company. Whenever I heard the name "Gearbox", I used to think about how much fun I had playing BL1&2 with my brother, but now all I can think about is Randy bragging about getting dropped from a lawsuit based on the extremely negative (and well deserved) reaction to A:CM. You know, when he decided to praise the free market for rewarding his borderline criminal mismanagement of the most influential sci-fi IP since Star Wars "That whole thing was a huge waste of time. The market proved it was doing its job perfectly. The market is dispassionate - rewarding what it likes and punishing what it doesn't. There is an objectivity and fairness in the open market's harsh, firm justice. For every place the market succeeded, the legal system failed as it was being manipulated by what appeared to me to be essentially mafia style extortion tactics."

The nice thing about the BBC situation is that as a result, a lot of their good stuff ends up on Youtube for free. I ended up becoming familiar with Charlie Brooker through a friend, and ALL of his stuff is on there. Obviously no good if you don't like Charlie's shtick, but I think he's pretty awesome. There's also stuff like Soul/Reggae/Punk Britannia on there because of it. The cool thing is, BBC has given their blessing in this case, because they know the rights are a legal rat's nest but they want people to see their stuff without worrying about region content laws.

My brother and I played BL2 when we were drunk, called it "follow the diamond" and had fun shooting/looting. I can't tell you what the plot actually was, just that there's a bad guy who hates vault dwellers. The humor is pretty tryhard and cringey though, Borderlands would be much better if Gearbox realized their characters aren't that witty and just stuck to exploration, killing, and looting.

I might be alone there.

This is why I will forever love Apple because they fixed this kind of licensing poo poo when it came to buying your own music at least.

I bought my mom the Outlander series on Blu-Ray and digital for Christmas. To access the digital copies of her mommy porn I had to first go to Sony's site, create an account, and input a code. Then I went to Ultraviolet and linked my new Sony account. Then I logged into her Roku and looked for the Flixster app that Ultraviolet's website said would work, but Flixster got bought out by Fandango and now it's called FandangoNow. I create a FandangoNow account and link my Ultraviolet account and now I can see her Outlander season in my list of shows, but that's all I can see because FandangoNow only streams in a web browser.

I call Sony's helpdesk and they're all like, "just download Vudu." even though that app is listed nowhere in any documentation. I download that on my increasingly frustrated mom's Roku and her Outlander shows up, but only to purchase. We wait 5 minutes and it updates to show she actually owns it and doesn't just have it linked through 3 different media accounts for nothing.

I guess they stopped using iTunes with these digital copies because when I purchased The Force Awakens I entered my code, selected iTunes, and it was ready to play. Now it's a mess of apps and accounts that's almost as awkward as watching Outlander with your mother.
