I think he kinda first showed up around the time of AVGN, so "angry and loud" was a popular formula. I enjoyed? his early stuff when I was younger and had much worse taste, but at some point the gimmick got tired and too "wacky." I remember them ramping up the cringey meta stuff that surrounded the reviews to the point of getting unbearable. I suspect that changing away from it is difficult when a large chunk of the fanbase only wants more of the same.
