During the Trad Games chat thread, an argument ocurred. While there was an agreement that BESM (Big Eyes Small Mouth - an universal "Play Any Kind Of Anime" RPG) was just the WORST, no one could really come up with a good system to use to play an anime campaign. So gently caress it, let's be constructive and fix the problem by making some kick-rear end anime RPGs ourselves! This contest will run a little differently than most on the board, as the only way to avoid the problems of BESM is to not make a universal system, but to make a game that can run a particular kind of anime. I've crafted a list of "Anime Genres", and like a 48 film competition you'll be assigned one at random. Will you have to make the best Magical Girl RPG? Perhaps a "Fish/Fishes Out of Water" story? WHO KNOWS! Anime can be released in different ways and are created to serve different purposes and entertain different audiences. The best way we can simulate that is to introduce a "Modifier", which every entry has to utilize. Will you have to make a mash-up of two genres? Will you need to use your RPG to promote an item for sale (which, for some reason, is sold seperately)? Does it need to encourage a Melodramatic story, or an ULTRAVIOLENT ONE? Before Week 1: Sign-Ups are open! As soon as I have 8 participants, I'll be drawing each participant's randomly chosen Anime Genre. Did you wait too long and 8 already signed up? No worries! Just post here and let me know you need a genre - everyone who signed up by January 19th was given theirs that evening, so I can draw yours as soon as I know you're in! Sign ups end January 28th at 11:59p CST: sign up by then and you'll get your Anime Genre. I'll also be posting the whole contest's Anime Modifier then, so everyone gets both at the same time. Week 1: Come up with an RPG concept that will fit your Genre and uses the contest's Modifier, then post a 150 word ad-blurb that would go on the back of the corebook if it was sold in stores by February 5th at 11:59p CST. Week 2: Make some progress writing up something and post proof of your efforts by February 12th at 11:59p CST. Week 3: Have a rough draft ready and submit it by February 19th at 11:59p CST. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it should be playable because... Weeks 4, 5, and 6: Have your rough draft playtested by someone else participating in the contest, and playtest (or find some people to playtest) someone else's game. Submit your thoughts by March 12th at 11:59p CST. Use their feedback to... Week 7: Finish up your game and submit it no later than Sunday, March 19th by 11:59p CST. 1. Your game MUST embody your assigned genre, and incorporate the contest's modifier. 2. Your game must be an original IP - Even if Go Nagai gave you permission to make a Cutey Honey RPG, you wouldn't be able to use that IP for this contest. 3. Also, your game needs to be original for this contest. There is nothing wrong with modifying Cortex+ or D20, but the theme needs to be represented by your mechanics, and the game must be created during the contest. 4. You can do whatever you like with whatever you make - sell it, give it away, lock up all copies in a safe - but by participating you give me permission to record an Actual Play podcast session using your final entry, if you are one of the chosen finalists. 5. You are expected to submit by the listed time and date listed at the end of each week in the schedule. All times are listed as CST, so you might need to convert it to whatever timezone you live in. 6. Because I know life can both suck and throw unexpected hurdles your way, you get One Late Pass (see below). Late passes allow you to miss a deadline and still be in the running. As long as you submit both the missed deadline and the current one, you'll still have an opportunity to win! Now, as anyone who has watched anime has seen, being late to class requires a punishment. You'll need to write 150 word fanfic related to your entry and submit it by that deadline as well. Feel free to use the fanfic in your entry if you like, it could come in handy. The other option is for you to donate to the prize pile instead of writing a fanfic (with your donation being given randomly at the end of the contest to someone who didn't make it to the finals). After the final deadline, I'll pick the TheSoundNinja posted:Rule 3 simply states this thought that was brought up in the chat thread: You can't submit an already made anime RPG to this contest. I might be down but the whole thing has so many rules and Musts, like it's a homework assignment instead of a fun experiment in design. I have no idea how I'd rope in my usual group into playtesting Maid 2 as well. Can't we just submit a final copy or something?

There's a grand total of three "must" rules and only one of them hasn't been in every single contest before (it's the one about not submitting games explicitly based on existing IP). Anyway, I linked this thread in the ADTRW chat thread so maybe we'll get non-TG folk interested. Lemon-Lime fucked around with this message at 11:59 on Jan 18, 2017 |

TheSoundNinja posted:Which "musts" are too much, if you don't mind me asking? I don't dig the tone coming from the big list of absolute rules, but I really don't think the Playtesting step is going to work. It's a big barrier to entry for participants to organize and chase down players, especially if they get something hard to sell, like Monster Harem. I get that playing a game's a great way to get to grips and understand it fully, but I have no idea how I'd drag my usual group away from Age of Rebellion to try an untested game from someone they've never met, based on a genre and medium they don't like. You'd probably be fine just sending them to other entrants for a friendly critique early on, probably at the draft stage. Other than that I don't think the approach is a good idea. It's really excessive and takes this whole thing too seriously. I'd expect most people are planning on entering because it seems fun and allows them to experiment with game design, while academic style requirements for first drafts by exactly 11:59 are a little intimidating, especially when you say you'll just ignore the strict time stuff anyway. I doubt anyone thinks they'll create something that'll get much attention, but it'll be something fun to make. The goal should be about entertaining each other and playing with design, and I feel that the set deadlines and restrictions get in the way of that. The whole thing kinda reminds me of the old GWS Iron Chef challenges, where they struggled to get organised because they got too invested with giant OPs and trying to set everything in concrete, while people just got intimidated and didn't enter. If I was writing the OP, I'd basically say "This month's challenge is to create a Good Anime Game. Sign up and I'll send you a genre, and you'll need to make a game that matches it, along with a short blurb about the game and setting. I'll be scoring based on Mechanical Quality, Genre Emulation and Flavour. There'll be prizes for winners, submitted by DTRPG. Signups end at the start of Feb and submissions stop around the end of the month" and you'd have roughly the same result but be a lot less scary to new entrants. The Modifier is a bad idea as well, since we've already got a clearly defined goal that's going to be enough to work with, and it's just going to favor some genres or homogenize everything. I checked the thread for last month's and most of the rules were there, so I'd be interested to see if this was actually the case for people. drrockso20 posted:Not sure about him, but Rule 3 definitely removes any desire I have to join this contest Rule 3 seems pretty dumb to me as well. I get a need to encourage creativity, but it's just stopping more casual forays into design. Plus it blocks a lot of jokes as well, like OSR Sailor Moon or Gumshonen. If you're scoring based on mechanics and ideas, just don't give rote stuff a high score. Wrestlepig fucked around with this message at 14:16 on Jan 18, 2017 |

But making an OSR or D20 game that is designed around magical girl storytelling? Totally game. So why the limitation on IP? Because the argument wasn't about "There isn't a good Sailor Moon game." I want you to make something that you can sell afterwards, and keeping it to original IP lets you do just that. There's nothing wrong with references to shows that exist, just make them a little more vague. Afterward, if you want to be less vague, why not make a supplement for your game that let someone run a Sailor Moon game? These guys did:
