M4/3 users, do you see a difference in color rendition between Panasonic and Olympus (or Samyang, Voightlander, etc) lenses? With an E-M10,I've noticed that the adapted Nikon 300mm lens casts a little magenta into everything, so highlights can be a little funky and greens get kind of desaturated. The Panasonic 20mm has a similar tendency but it's more pinkish and less pronounced. The Canon 400mm that I just picked up an M4/3 adapter for is definitely more pleasant than either the 20 or the 300, to my eyes, with a more natural and subdued yellowy warmth that lets greens and blues pop a little bit more.

Obviously these characteristics can be compensated for with PP to an extent, but there will always be a little bit of difference to photos taken with each lens unless one is willing to dig deep and do serious color correction in Photoshop, and even then it's hard to make it consistant across different lighting situations.

It's funny; I don't even have an Olympus lens for my E-M10. The 12mm has been on my list for a while but I've never gotten around to it.

Talking about lens color characteristics on digital cameras is kind of touchy feely since we all have different monitors and will see things differently. I can only speak to the relative differences between my lenses when viewing photos on my monitor. But... in general, what do you think about the color rendition of Olympus lenses compared to Panasonic?

I own both and they are fantastic lenses. The 90mm is incredibly sharp and has lovely OOF areas. The 56mm is smaller, several stops faster, and has a very useful FOV. If I had to choose just one it would be the 56mm. That lens has consistently gotten me the most "keeper" during wedding and portrait shoots. Please temper this advise with the caveat that I have only owned the 90mm for 6 months and the 56mm was the 2nd fuji lens I bought so my sample sizes are disportionate. Maybe rent both and do a side by side test?

something to do with sensor filters. I imagine it'll normalize as new lenses/sensors come out.

I use the 56 as my main portrait lens and I think it's enough. The 90 is a bit too specialised. However if you shoot a lot of headshots, or portraiture is your main genre of shooting, I'd get the 90 in addition to the 56.

All I have off-brand is the original Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 and I can't say I've noticed a difference with it compared to my Oly lenses, but I'll take a few with it and the 12-40mm and see if I can spot a difference.

E: I guess I do also have some OM lenses but they're obviously older. The 180mm f/2.8 definitely puts a purple fringe on things.

Here ya go, quick and dirty test with a fancy looking mug, both JPEGs straight out of camera:

Both at f/4.5, 1.60, ISO 3200.

Can I get a lense recommendation for wide shot portrait photography for my Panasonic G7? Still learning a hell of a lot about cameras and while I love my Panasonic 25mm/1.7 I'm finding it a little difficult to do full body shots that show off the backgrounds as well - the main problem is that I'm using small spaces that limit me simply stepping back to compensate.

Is the Xt1 with the xf 18-55 still a good buy? It's a full $1000 cheaper than the xt2 with the same lens brand new. I'll probably wait for xt20 pricing though either way. I really want the big viewfinder though, and that was one of the sacrifices on the xt10 wasn't it?

Grabbed the E-M5 II yesterday... so excited.

I had an original digital PEN ... broke it, and replaced it with an E-PL2, which was just the same sensor. Wasn't amazing. I later got the original Sony RX100 compact, and the image quality was just so much vastly better I almost never picked up the PEN again.

Managed to break that compact, also stupidly. Decided the best upgrade I could make though was to go back to modern mirrorless which I still have all my lenses for. It would have felt weird rebuying the same 4 year old camera, and the modern iterations are insanely expensive, though the RX100 certainly hit a "good enough" sweet spot for image quality.

Found a good deal on the E-M5 (barely used) and am looking forward to testing it in low-light concert situations. Obviously there are trade-offs in portability between mirrorless and compact (the RX100 fit into my back pocket), but the compact was a slight pain in that I'd generally have to get to the very front row to get clear shots.

One of my favourites from the PEN (with the f1/8 50mm OM lens):

I keep mine in the leather carrying case (which Incidentally has gotten more comments recently than the camera itself) and I've taken it through some serious downpours and in the desert with no issues whatsoever. They aren't built cheap.

The leaks weren't looking like it would be included in today's event, but it's still noteworthy that the other 2017 X Mount lens on Fuji's roadmap was absent: the XF 80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro. Once we have that, I'm curious if Fuji moves toward issuing some mark II versions of early X Mount glass (35/1.4, etc.) or more esoteric options (tilt-shift, even longer super-telephoto, etc.). I think the latter is somewhat unlikely based on lack of mainstream appeal, and maybe they just focus on G Mount for a while. I still think it's remarkable how comprehensive Fuji's X Mount lineup is in just 5 years.

I find it somewhat hilarious that even with Fuji's buckshot approach to the camera body market, they still haven't landed on the combination with the new sensor that would make my heart swoon: 35mm equiv fast lens, dial controls, tilt screen, weatherproof, rangfindery form factor.

X100F: no tilt screen, not weatherproof
X-T2: not rangefinery
X-T20: not rangerfindery, not weatherproof
X-Pro 2: no tilt screen
X-A3: not dial-controlled

My X-E2 is long in the tooth and it's just so frustrating that I feel like they keep dancing around my sweet spot.

I'll probably get one of the above cameras, and the 23f2 if not the X100F. It's just annoying.

The Panasonic 20mm is a very, very nice lense.

Okay, it's only a little wider, but perhaps that is enough to make the difference for you.

Personally speaking, I find anything much wider than a 35 mm equivalent (ie 17mm on m4/3) adds unflattering distortion to portrait s.

There have to be some side-by-side AF comparisons on YouTube by now... (unless Fuji told them to wait for final firmware)

edit: also this one:

quote:

The X100F has the same focus system as the X-Pro2. It means you now have fast, precise AF with zone mode, center mode and wide tracking mode. It works just as well as on the X-Pro2, so if you have tried that, you will know what to expect. I don’t miss shots because of autofocus of Fujifilm cameras anymore. Thats basically what I require.

Tilt screen is like folding hard top on a convertible. It's more practical but it ruins the classic look.

I would like to see X100 evolve into 2 versions, one with a tilting screen, one with smaller non-tile screen but bigger EVF. Kind of like the GoPro 4 Silver with a screen and GoPro 4 Black with no screen but better spec.

Oh sure, I get it. I just like it for the ability to hold the camera low and shoot street portraits. My aim is -awful- when guesstimating. And a tilt-up screen lets me shoot like I was back using a TLR again.
