I finally get to post something in my favorite thread.

A local school got demolished so a time capsule sealed in 1926 got opened. Inside was an article mentioning the The Crash of the Shenandoah so I looked it up.

quote:

USS Shenandoah was the first of four United States Navy rigid airships. It was constructed during 1922–23 at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, and first flew in September 1923. It developed the U.S. Navy's experience with rigid airships, and made the first crossing of North America by airship. On the 57th flight,[2] Shenandoah was torn apart in a squall line over Ohio in September 1925

Must have been a helluva squall. She looked so sturdy!

quote:

On 2 September 1925, Shenandoah departed Lakehurst on a promotional flight to the Midwest that would include flyovers of 40 cities and visits to state fairs. Testing of a new mooring mast at Dearborn, Michigan, was included in the schedule. While passing through an area of thunderstorms and turbulence over Ohio early in the morning of 3 September, during its 57th flight,[2] the airship was caught in a violent updraft that carried it beyond the pressure limits of its gas bags. It was torn apart in the turbulence and crashed in several pieces near Caldwell, Ohio. Fourteen crew members, including Commander Zachary Lansdowne, were killed. This included every member of the crew of the control cabin (except for Lieutenant Anderson, who escaped before it detached from the ship); two men who fell through holes in the hull; and several mechanics who fell with the engines. There were twenty-nine survivors, who succeeded in riding three sections of the airship to earth.

quote:

Two schools of thought developed about the cause of the crash. One theory is that the gas cells over-expanded as the ship rose, due to Lansdowne’s decision to remove the 10 automatic release valves, and that the expanding cells damaged the framework of the airship and led to its structural failure.

There are numerous memorial sites scattered across the countryside. Because of debris? Yeah, human debris.

At least the lieutenant got out :captainpop:

E: lmao the hull was stripped clean by local looters. The farmer who owned the land the wreckage was on charged people to come look at it.

yeah the US navy experimented with airships in the 1930s. every single one of them crashed, and this was even with the massive technological advantage called "helium" because the united states basically controlled the world supply of it, extracted from natural gas

on the bright side, it did lead to the hilarious, experimental flying aircraft carrier which is osha as heck

There's a marker off 77 indicating the site of the wreck of the USS Shenandoah. Dad had me believing for a while that a battleship somehow crashed in the middle of a field in Ohio.

Alright then, as an Australian with an MC heavy vehicle license, let me clear all this mess up.

That's a rigid pantec, if it had 2 drive axels it'd be a bogie drive rigid pantec. If it had curtains it'd be a rigid tautliner/curtainsider, if it had nothing it's just a flatbed.

A "tractor" is a prime mover.

A semi-trailer is a prime mover with 40/45" trailer and is referred to also called a single.

A prime mover with two 40" trailers with a turntable (5th wheel) on the back of the first (A trailer) to connect to the second trailer (B trailer) is a B-double, adding another A trailer to the front is a B-triple.

The same again, but with two shorter trailers and a total overall length under 19m is still technically a B-double, but more colloquially referred to as a set of pocket doubles.

A primer mover with a 40" trailer, then a dolly connected to another 40" trailer is a double train, another dolly and trailer is a triple train.

The largest road legal combination without special permits, but only allowed in a few select remote areas, is the AB quad road train, a 40" trailer then a dolly then a B-triple and is about 50 meters long and around 125 tonne total gross (I can't remember the exact limits)

Hope everyone learned something about Australian road transport today.

It’s a truck with a box on the back. Hence, “box truck”.

Flat bed trucks have flat beds. American nomenclature is very original.

air crash investigation videos are interesting exercises in OSHA stuff

this vid is particularly noteworthy, airbus have a public demonstration of their new plane, the first ever fly by wire commercial plane, and doing a low pass at an air show the pilot crashes into a forest.

whoops.
