The dream of Marxist mass politics is of course to have all of the upsides to centralization while avoiding the downsides, but the questions of who really controls the means of production, and who benefits when you concentrate them into fewer and fewer actually working hands, will always loom over this vision. 20th century techno-utopian authoritarian socialism with its party-managerial class is only one of the more dramatic outcomes possible, but economic subjugation in a "democratic" socialist state is just as easy to envision for the same fundamental reasons. The alternative isn't a totalitarian society of eternal vigilance. It's to dismiss insurrectionary capture of these institutions to begin with in favor of a prefigurative politics of "building the new society in the shell of the old", not through attitudes, but through direct material relationships that offer some degree of exodus away from capitalist power. That can be comprehensive, like the revolutionary industrial unionism of the IWW or the CNT-FAI. It can also be brought together in an organic way from many smaller components, as in the growing solidarity economies found in Greece and Spain, through things like worker and consumer co-operatives, community shared agriculture, local mutual credit and insurance, and so on.
