Do you like shooting at things with hundreds of weird weapons without really thinking about anything very hard? If so it is a good game for you.

To be fair, PSVR is for all intents and purposes a new console and stuck with the usual launch year dearth. Nevermind it being VR, which is still a fairly nascent field of game design that studios are only now starting to develop for. The real telling factor will be this year's e3.

Again; this year's e3 will the telling factor. Like most new consoles, all you'll ever likely see is ports of pre-existing titles and rush-jobs the first year or so. It's only now after a good year of people messing with the dev kits and putting some work in (you know, like a regular game production cycle) that we'll actually see anything proper come out.

Also I fully agree horror VR is a very niche thing, motion sickness aside, because OHSHITOHSHITIT'SCOMINGFORMEFUCKFUCKRUN!

magda, make the tea
I beat diablo 3 and am in adventure mode, and up until this point i've basically been switching my gear to whichever has the most green triangles on. Since I hit adventure mode i've gone up 2 difficulties to torment 2 without much trouble and played for a few hours but nothing i've found is objectively better than what i have.

I tried reading something about how to level up gear in the end game but it seemed like the most incomprehensibly complicated thing. pages of strategies around mix/maxing the stat gains where you get ranges of 16-20%. Is an extra 1% worth it?
There was a section about gambling for good items from the woman and I bought 20 bracers that were all significantly worse than what i'd picked up in act 5 so i'm not really sure what's going on. I can craft items, but every single craftable item is significantly worse than what I got in act 5 too so I don't know what the point of that is (seriously at any point in the game what is the point of someone you can buy/craft weapons from?)

Am I missing something or is it just keep playing for super marginal improvements? I'm totally ok with the game just generating random stuff to do but I was under the impression you kept progressing at a decent rate because there are 13 levels of torment difficulty.

There's some impressive, really fun stuff for PSVR already. I'll agree that waiting for E3 might be a good plan, as that's where major stuff will probably (hopefully) be shown. Personally, I really wanted a VR headset, but wasn't fully prepared to upgrade my PC on top of buying the Vive/Oculus. I've been very happy with it. Two of my favorite games last year were for it (Thumper and Rez - Thumper might have been my favorite game last year), and if you're not picky about trying out some hit or miss things, there are a lot of other fun games and experiences. Stuff like Rush of Blood, Eagle Flight, Tethered, and Superhypercube are all a lot of fun if you're into those sorts of things. And VR is also a surprisingly social thing right now. Getting friends together and watching each other experience some of the demos and games for the first time is a lot of fun, then all playing Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is really cool.

I think a lot of whether you'll find it worth it is how intrigued you are by VR right now. If you're really excited for it, and want to be in on it from the beginning and trying weird, possibly bad things, learning first hand what works and what doesn't, you'll probably feel like you got your money's worth. But if you want a complete, polished experience with a lot of content, waiting until after E3 or longer is almost definitely the way to go.

I'd agree with all of that.

IMO it's worth it if you find VR fascinating. If you go in expecting to use it every day it's probably best to wait. Expect all the early adopter woes, but really as far as launches go PSVR was actually solid. The stream of game coming out has been pretty bleak though.

The average person probably should wait till E3 or maybe just put if off for a couple of years.

RE7 in VR really is goddamn amazing though.

If you just want to give VR a spin for the novelty of it and have a Samsung S6 or S7, a GearVR is well worth your time. Just make sure to get the newer Black model if you can (slightly-wider viewing angle, and it doesn't fog up as much when you first put it on).

I miss this genre. But I guess it's one that requires a whole lot of things to come together and if they don't it all fails completely. You really need to nail the physics, the feel, the weapons, secrets and the level design or else it can get old real quick.

No matter how excited you are about VR, PSVR probably isn't worth buying a used bundle off ebay or craigslist that costs 10% more than the MSRP. If I didn't already have one I'd probably wait until it's on shelves and has more/better games.

This. I don't have a 4K TV yet, but I have both an OG and a Pro. I can definitely see more stability in frame rate on the Pro, some textures look a lot smoother, loading times on some games are improved, but it's not a huge upgrade. When I get the 4K TV (hopefully within the next few months) is when I expect to see wild differences between the two consoles.

When I get the 4K TV (hopefully within the next few months) is when I expect to see wild differences between the two consoles.

Now that I've been kicking around this LG for a few weeks, I can say that nearly all the Pro-enabled stuff has been significant enough that I'm really happy with the Pro (and, needless to say, the TV), but it's the sort of thing you sort of appreciate upon first glance if the game's really trying to get close to 4K before the checkerboard rendering kicks in or is native (especially native), but you sort of forget about it after a bit. It's only when you go back to something that's 1080p that it really jumps out at you.

I played through all of FFXV on the Pro, and would take my save to just fart around doing hunts and stuff during down time at work, and frankly I felt it looked a little blurrier at home due to the upscaling. Stuff like Deus Ex, Battlefield and Titanfall 2 look super clean and sharp, and that was a pretty jarring transition.

Six months from now, I doubt the contrasts will be that sharp, since a whole lot more games will take advantage of the increased specs. That a decent number of Pro-enabled games aren't really using supersampling or anything at 1080p is also kinda weird.

I dig the Pro, and would definitely echo others' comments that it's a must if you don't have a PS4 yet or have a 4K TV, but if someone just recently got a vanilla PS4 (or another system), I'd have a lot harder time telling them to go throw down another $400 just to future-proof things when so few games are taking advantage of the extra horsepower right now. As it stands, even with a limited (but growing) amount of games that use it, gaming is unquestionably the medium I most use that takes advantage of the resolution.

The ear muffs are slightly nicer than the gold. They're pretty comfortable. The most noticeable thing is the sound quality. The 3D thing works nicer and the sound quality is noticeably better than the Gold, which didn't really have any sound quality issues to begin with.

The construction appears to be better (uses metal instead of plastic for the band) but I won't be able to really speak on long term reliability until I've had them at least 6 months.

After watching the Giantbomb Quicklook and reading the Polygon review, I think I want to pick up Yakuza 0. But from reading the review the reviewer pointed out how bad the game is with its depiction of women. As far as I know, the series always suffered from this. Is there a reason for this? It seems like so much loving care and nuance was put into the main cast of characters in the series but a woman comes along and is just a prop in service for one of the male characters or story. It's just odd to me that the writers of these games can write these characters so well and just put no effort into any woman character.

It's not something preventing me from getting the game, but I'm just curious to know if there's some sort of cultural thing I'm not getting or if the writers really don't know how to write women.

Yakuza has always been that way. Sleeping Dogs was also largely terrible with women. Not sure if it's due to the genre or culture, but I've just come to accept it.

It might be a writer thing, but Yakuza is also a crime drama and crime dramas tend to use women as props in the best of times.

Yeah, this. For well-written women in an open-world style crime game, your best bet would probably be something like Saint's Row or Mafia.

There are lots of women in the Yakuza series (can't speak to 0) that don't exist just to be victimized as a plot point, but it does happen. In the end its a Japanese gangster drama though and its not too surprising.

The women in the Yakuza games are fine, honestly. They make jokes, they have definable personalities. The most major ones to the plot are also the ones that get kidnapped/threatened with murder but it's not like it's aggressively sexist or anything, it's just a crime detective thing. It's too goofy and well-meaning to take it as anything but them reusing tropes from movies, and it doesn't get into weird gender politics or anything. There's lots of incidental female characters who are, like, fine. It's not gonna win any awards but it's better about it than your average hollywood movie or whatever. Yakuza has a pretty sizable female fanbase so its not like its turning to the camera and going FEMINISM IS A JOKE or anything.

and tbh its better about women than saint's row
