The AI group is pretty cool. I usually get annoyed with constant Facebook notifications but everything everyone posts is at least mildly amusing and sometimes really cool.

I think so far the only folks banned have been spammers (wtf Facebook) and one dude who was apparently harassing non-members. :newlol:

If it makes you feel any better, popping the fuse labelled "emissions" on my car causes it to throw over a dozen codes, also throws the low coolant message, service vehicle soon message, turns on the reduced power light, puts the car in limp (won't rev above 3000), and the throttle only works when it wants to. Same with idling. And it was alternating between running on all 4 cylinders and 2 cylinders.

Just a question here - has anyone ever seen any digital tire tread depth gauges that can read down to 1/64th or 1/128th of an inch? I'm thinking I may want to look at some kind of digital gauge that's not necessarily sold for tire tread depth but could be used for that.

EDIT: Intercomp 102081 will do down to about 0.001 inches with 0.0005 inch resolution. I need to see how much they want for recalibration once and awhile (if I can find someone with Jo blocks at work I can do a rough check).

BTW that's a $250 tread depth gauge. :psyduck:

Can't you measure depth with a standard pair of calipers? Why not use those?

That's why the bar comes out of the back end of your digital caliper.

that little gubbins on the bottom. that's your depth gauge.

Oh.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.

Also $249.00 is kinda' steep... maybe if it had calibration and memory storage/averaging of measurements and whatnot.

It depends on what you are measuring. If someone can die when you measure it wrong, mitutoyos. If it just needs to be good enough, harbor freight all the way.

I take it that caliper does not come with calibration documentation, right? (I can probably find some Jo blocks at work to check it against. (From one of the mechanics who doesn't immediately start speedwalking away when they see me, I mean. (They really like to stay in shape.)))

What do you need that much precision for, anyway? If it's borderline, it doesn't really matter if you're at 3/32 or 13/128.

My tires are wearing evenly but fast. I've got 2500 miles and I'm already down to 9/32nd but the accuracy of that number is sorta iffy. Extrapolating out that's about 16-18,000 miles until these tires are no longer legal. However that's sorta best case it may be even faster depending on the tread measurements I can't quite tell if they're 9/32 or more like 17/64.

IDGI - everyone else seems to have tires that last like 50,000+ miles. I don't drive like a crackhead, watch tire pressure and alignment and whatnot...

It's rubber. the cheapo caliper is going to be just as close as an expensive one on a squishy material.

It would be pretty drat hard to extrapolate the life of a tire after that little wear.

You seriously overthink poo poo.

Well and the OEM tires I think have a softer, less durable rubber material.

I just want some tank treads man. You know, caterpillars.

I'll check back on this after another 2500 miles.

Don't forget to measure them before and after driving, and keep track of the temperatures on them as well, so your measurements aren't thrown off by tire temperature.

You should also be measuring between each block of treads across the width of each tire so your results aren't skewed by shoulder or camber wear.

I think that's the problem. That, or you really need some :420:. You're overthinking the Rav.

I know this is a car (sub)forum, but you own a car that's meant to be driven with very little thought from the owner. Just drive it, follow the maintenance schedule, rotate the tires every ~5-10k, and let it do its thing. If you're paranoid about alignment, go buy a lifetime alignment package from your local Firestone, it's usually $150-200. You get an alignment every 6000 miles or 6 months (probably whichever is later).

Discount Tire (America's Tire in some parts of the country) offers free rotations, even if you didn't buy the tires from them. Take them up on that service (and buy your next set from them, they're by far the easiest to deal with out of all the chain shops I've dealt with).

For what it's worth, I've had two alignments done on my scrub-tier GM econobox. Once just because I wanted to around 120k, once because suspension parts were replaced. It was dead on factory specs at 120k, and after the accident (and parts replacement) last year, it was still very close (before the alignment) even after a body shop had the front left corner apart to replace the lower control arm. I bought it with 60k 4 years ago, has 160k now. If a 12 year old GM econobox can hold an alignment for so long, I'm pretty sure a Toyota can too. :v:
