A few pages ago but...Roobanguy posted:this complaint has always annoyed me. the only people who say this never actually played longwar and watched streams like beagle rush who played the game at the hardest difficulty, or tried playing it on the classic difficulty equivalent because they beat the base game and thought the glowing yellow button suggesting people who beat the base game on classic to play normal first didn't apply to them. normal and the difficulty higher than it weren't much harder than the base classic, just longer. I played EW on Classic, I played LW on Normal Dynamic War (15f I think? last version before final release?), beat both, I would disagree on difficulty. At the very least, the longer campaign introduced more wounding and forced grinding. The base game is actually pretty tight as far as not having too many missions before something happens (plot, new alien, new toy for your soldiers, whatever), which isn't the case with late-game LW where you are going on missions just to be able to get enough flight computers and alloys for a Firestorm. But this is IMHO, and I'm not a gamer who likes grinding. Also for those worried about LW 2 overwriting their mod changes, you can always get it from Nexus.

I just had a jailbreak mission where it took 8 turns dashing just to get in sight of the jailhouse. That was a pretty drat big map. Had 13 turns on the timer and I don't think I could have rescued the dude even without triggering a fight. I just had to turn around and dash to the pick up zone. LW2 is starting to get fun though I think. Just started a mission where I'm hunting down a spy with a bunch of haven workers.

My ExtractCorpses mod might work, haven't tested it yet. But it allows you to literally carry enemy bodies off the field if that's what you're lacking. And a little config should allow you to pick up any LongWar special category aliens.

Uh that's the thing, I'm using your mod to cheat corpses. (it might be balanced since you kinda have to go out of your way to get those corpses) Thing is, the statue destroy mission had no timer or an extraction point so I was expecting it to be a mission where I can bring home corpses.

Coincidentally fired up XCOM 2 last night for the first time in a couple months and was super stoked to see that LW2 was released! gently caress yeah, says I. Three campaign starts later and I'm realizing I have no idea how any of the new mechanics work, especially infiltration. Why so many dudes, second mission of the game? I ended up watching youtubes from the play-tester guy that put up the Long War 2 introduction video that was posted earlier in the thread and its making a lot more sense now. I'm definitely looking forward to giving this another shot this weekend now that I have a better idea how some of this stuff is supposed to work. StealthCOM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vdRTlc_ZM8 For those of you who've gotten a little ways into a campaign, what difficulty are playing on? I started on Legend since that's what I've been playing on vanilla and it seems doable if you plan your infiltrations correctly but I have no idea how the game ramps up past the first month or so.

I do actually like the change, lets me take time to set up a plan of attack while I'm getting to the target. Just ran into my first scrapped mission in LW2. First supply line raid, expected 3-4 pods, maybe one or two more at worst. Cue the 30+ enemies vs my small half rookie 4-man team. Even then it was a tense time calling for an evac and trying to hold out the 3 turns until it got there. Special thanks to the absurd amount of flashbangs used and the LCpl Gunner I brought along. Without them no one would have made it out alive. Really liking LW2 so far.

because kills matter alot less towards leveling than just missions completed, sending a shinobi to find a safe path to send you're escort out on is a real smart idea. had 4 dudes on that mission who were out of concealment immediately and still managed to sneak through without alerting a pod til the last turn. man shinobi is a real dumb class name. should of been scout or something. Note that when you do Haven defense / spy detection missions, the guerilla fighters can't pick up loot. I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but my liaison grenadier spent most of her time running around grabbing things after I figured this out. The new Advanced Warfare Center works kind of like a Psi lab where you have to train soldiers in them to unlock abilities. If I get "incompatible" skills do they work? Like I have a Sharpshooter that has the option to learn Return Fire ("When targeted by enemy fire, automatically fire back with your pistol once per turn."), but Sharpshooters can't use pistols... Do they get the ability to equip one? Or do they get one just for the purpose of the perk? Or is it just a waste?

Everyone can equip a pistol, it goes in a utility item slot instead of as a secondary weapon or whatever. This lets you put the dlc pistol on whoever's going to find the conceal most useful, which is neat.

If the LW2 mission timers seem short, I just discovered that as soon as you have officers they get an ability to extend the timer by 2 turns. It costs 10 intel, but you use it during a mission so you only really have to spend it when things are tight. Looks like higher level officers can use it multiple times in a single battle as well. (Also, command and the other officer abilities make the death from above ability on snipers much more useful).

So, I haven't touched LW2 yet. But I want to. But the problem is that LW1 gave me serious mission fatigue to the point that even after like 3 separate attempts I never finished it. 120 missions is just too drat long. Can LW2 be shortened to more like ~80 without wrecking every balance curve?

Definitely not worth doing a mission unless you can infiltrate to 100% at least. I just finished one to rescue four civilians and it was a fuckin' slog.

Fister Roboto posted:Is the key to LW2 to forget everything I know about XCOM2 and try to play it as an actual stealth game? Retain everything you know about how to abuse the AI during the fight and learn which classes can bring explosives that can damage terrain the way you used to. Flashbangs are now a lot better than before since a lot of the times, you extract rather than "eliminate remaining hostiles", so a well placed Flashbang can let you suppress a dangerous position long enough for you to get past and make a break for the extraction point. Doing so force them to run into your overwatch while you are leap frogging to the extraction point. Don't worry about loot since a ton of it drops. Aim to do the missions in the minimal amount of time possible. Staying around too long because of playing too safe can trigger reinforcement waves which tend to be big. Overall they did a good job making you feel small and vulnerable rather than in vanilla XCom where you became walking titans of destruction leisurely strolling through missions. I am pleasantly surprised by the difficulty tuning. I lowered difficulty to Veteran expecting Long War 1 dickery but so far its not bad at all. My hope is that they have removed the frequency of the strategic layer "traps" where you are following a bad strategy but it doesn't manifest itself until 20 hours later.

I've run into probably half a dozen missions that I could do all or mostly stealthy. My favorite to date is a kill or extract VIP mission. Put a sniper up on a roof, had a shinobi stealth through the level to the target to give me squadsight, then walked right back out for the extraction. Very, very cool. Less cool was the mission I just finished where there were zero enemy pods between me and the extraction on a VIP extract mission. No concealment at all, I simply walked to the extraction point over the course of five turns. Advent is getting loving lazy. Edit: So that is an interesting glitch. My squad leader was gravely injured at the end of the mission despite no shots being fired. Must have tripped coming off the skyranger or something. Coolguye I'm going have to ask you put on a big notice for my suggestion: it only really works well with non-steam mods, seems like steam mods get priority over any mods in that folder after testing it. Though for people who tend to stick with the workshop and don't want to bother moving mods around, I'm willing to take requests to put up really small mods that are basically .ini alterations of what exactly you want, infilitration times, max pod sizes, etc. I won't touch them after release so that you can edit to your hearts content without having to worry about updates barring the LW2 team making major alterations to the config files.
