I would try some coppers in it but I'm not intentionally putting myself through that bullshit again, I'm used to 5 minute plug changes on 4.0Ls. Also, I'd never run a non-precious-metal plug in a wasted spark motor because I don't like halving my plug change interval. That's one of the few hard and fast rules I have on sparkplugs.

I did end up putting NGKs in it iirc because that's what the parts store had when I bought them a few months ago, right before I "fixed" it temporarily by replacing the #2 plug wire, and "fixed" it again (it started acting up again 50' out of the shop) by swapping the cat, O2 sensors, and manifold off my parts car onto it.

It's starting to get that stupid loving dead spot in the throttle range (high RPM, mid to high throttle) again and the misfiring/chugging is creeping back in at idle sometimes. I think I need to pull the plugs and see if any are fouled, betting #2 looks like it runs on coal.

If all it takes is a new plug or two every few months, gently caress it, I'll do a few plugs every few months. I don't particularly care about this motor (since it sounds like a barrel of assholes at cold idle and definitely has a hella bad case of piston slap on at least one cylinder, which may be related to this issue) so I'll just beat on it till it explodes and then either swap in my known good spare EJ251 or do something dumber.

Also I put half the snow tires on the MJ and it drove up the hill out of the yard on the first shot in an inch of snow, RWD open-diff, after only getting stuck a half dozen times while slowly losing ground every time I tried to make a run at it again (seriously, I moved 40-50' backward and was still stuck right before putting them on) on the allterrains it had on it. I still need to put the other two snows on it.

Nope. Issue went completely away when I did the plugs, so I assumed it wasn't it, and it's a bitch to get at without pulling the stupid intake off and stuff so I'd rather do almost anything else.

The piston slap is BAD. like REALLY loving BAD. I had no idea a motor could sound that bad without having spun a bearing. Chris and others have told me it'll just mak ea racket and maybe lose compression (thus the plug fouling and bogging) basically forever that way.

How is it I owned a 97 outback that got lovingly to 380,000 miles with only a head gasket change/upgrade done at 350k on the original motor and 5MT transmission, but you chew through Subarus like I chew through sugar-free gummy bears? I mean, in the end, we both end up with a gigantic pile of poo poo, but I still have transportation?

(I do know that the outback's first 340k were done by a guy, my uncle, who did dealer work every 3,000 miles on the clock and only drove from Phoenix to New York multiple times a year in it, zero city driving, so that's some of the mystery).

I buy shagged out shitboxes with at least 200k miles and three owners on their record. Max price is 500 bucks.

2000 red forester: 200k miles, PPPO had done the head gaskets at least two times, PPO did them at least once, ozmiander bought it and went to do them again properly and the last head bolt pulled the threads, he threw the block out and sold it to me for 300. I threw a motor in that was built from a junkyard block from 1991 with multi hundred thousand miles on it, ran that for 49k then was an idiot and spun a bearing real bad by forgetting to check the oil for a month and then executing an 80mph 4k rpm WOT pass because someone was hogging the left lane. The next engine was junk when I got it (I figured it was safe since it came from from a tboned donor and was wrong, it also had failed felblo head gaskets in it) and lasted a month because that's how long my junkyard warranty was. The one after that was loving mint at several hundred thousand miles but the car rusted in half around it. I still have that one as a spare.

Of those motors only one was my fault and I can't blame it at all.

2001 silver forester: I am too lazy to put the last motor from the red forester in this slamwagon until the motor that is in it no longer moves it. I bought it with 217k and no idea how it was treated previously for 500 bucks from a guy who used it as his winter beater and hoonmobile. He warned me it would need struts soon because he aired it out a few times, I am still driving on 3 of them. :v:

If it was the plugs fault all cylinders would be doing it. The misfire is coming back on the lovely sounding cylinder first, my bet is because it had low compression and is fouling just that plug. We shall see.

I am not throwing away money on good plugs for a poo poo motor that fouls them every few thousand miles. No point.

So I did the waterpump in the MJ because it exploded. Too lazy to cross-post the pics here, everyone knows what a waterpump looks like.

Today I called out sick because I had a sore throat and was hocking up chunky loogies. Went to the junkyard anyways looking for subaru body panels, accidentally bought an engine instead.

It's just an LM7 but the donor was basically untouched under the hood aside from the MAF having been pulled so I grabbed the one three cars over and put it on. Then pulled the whole mess out in one big tangle.

The donor, a 2000 gmc Yukon XL 1500

Intake tubes, MAF, airbox, filter, brackets
Throttle cable
All wiring, ECU
All accessories
Fan
Mounts
Ac lines, as much as I could get
All coolant hoses
Fuse box lid housing and brackets
Fuel lines as far as the frame rail. If I had been thinking I would have gotten the rest of the lines, filter, and pump assembly too but I was in search and destroy mode by then and cut them right after the filter. Oh well.

All for that price. I think I did ok.

Uh yeah you did, I'm jealous of your local yards. I have a couple of local pick-n-pulls - at location A I once got charged $4/ea for the shagged ujoints in a driveshaft. At location B the clerk charged me $20 for a front XJ skidplate (fair imo), and the (armed) guy who checks receipts stopped me because "that isn't enough, something isn't right here". I rarely go junkyarding anymore and when I have to, I take certain liberties regarding the transport of small items such as old RENIX IAT sensors etc. Getting detained by an armed guard over a paid-for, filthy skidplate that was destined for the crusher kind of ended my enthusiasm for Los Angeles junkyarding. Now I just drive 40min to a guy who specializes in scrapping XJs and has parts meticulously organized down to 10A fuse level, and is happy to let you wander around his shop/storage.

Also holy poo poo those Yukon doors are clean as gently caress, around here they would have been pulled immediately and resold out of some hombre's CONEX in the parking lot.

I never had any problems at LA junkyards, I used to spend weekends at the Wilmington Pick Your Parts and the Santa Fe Springs Ecology. Even the weird yards in Sun Valley were nice because I always was super friendly when I went in. It also helps to speak spanish. Some really rough places got the breaker bar carried on top of the toolbox, but through hundreds of visits I never had any problems.

edit:The only time I was ever hassled was at the tiny Moss Landing PickNPull which demanded I emptied my pockets. I asked if it had suddenly become the company policy, called the corporate number right there, they denied it flat out on speakerphone and magically there was a new manager the next week. It helped that I knew the regional manager. At that point I had probably gone to that location every few weeks for 10 years.

Suspension is pretty new, all new leafs and LII sliders instead of shackles. Allegedly locked front and rear, I don't trust my right foot with 290hp, a 6.xx first gear, 3/4 ton axles (really half ton, the j20 d60 in the back is 30 spline junk), and 35" TSLS so it will probably get the kingpin 60 and E350 D60-1SU I had been hoarding for my MJ. I have an Eaton elocker to buy 35 spline side gears for and an aussie 35 spline auto locker for the other end... and one 5.13 or 5.38 gearset bought already, I have been buying parts for the next off-road build for half a decade now whenever they come up for a good price. Oh, a set of h1 beadlocks too...

I went back for the bcm and vats receiver today so I can even keep that if I want. And found a 4 volume engine donor fsm set on ebay with a bad listing name for half normal price so I may even make money on that part when I am done with it!

Alright, bought a 94 chevy k3500 6.5td's driver drop 32 spline slipyoke np241c today. I also have in my possession a 92 or 93 23 spline np241d from a w250 aceofsnett and I tore the nv4500 out of years ago, which is a fixed rear output yoke. So I think as long as the input gears have the same bearing width and gear tooth profile, I can build a doubler box AND a tcase for cheap. Need to find what adapter plate and intermediate shafts cost for this these days.

If it looks too expensive I guess I will just go with a regular old tcase setup.

E: also going to have to delve into the wonderful world of adapter ujoints for this probably unless I just find a way to use 1410s or 1350s for everything.

It's so seized that a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt just tightened it more without the crank budging at all.

I'm still collecting parts, not gonna pull it till I've got everything in order. Hoping to clean up the transmission that's going behind it shortly.

If you're within reasonable distance of central mass, name your price for what's left of the 360. I don't think this one's worth shipping really.

e: to add to the complexity of this project, we're trying to buy more land so my spare parts fund is spoken for until a paycheck from now, which unfortunately puts the kibosh on me throwing several thousand dollars at J10 parts orders. I am loading all the poo poo for it up and dragging it to the hangar so I can regear the diffs, rebuild the transmission, build the doubler, rebuild the tcase, and clean up the engine under a roof instead of doing it in my yard and hoping it doesn't rain that day, though. Saturday I dragged three of the four tcases (parts donors included), transmission, and a boatload of other random stuff there, Sunday I loaded this big bastard up but didn't feel like doing much else after that for some odd reason.
