Not really switched out; Nomura was already there, he just did monster designs instead of character designs. Amano stepped down for whatever reason, and they had to fill the gap with someone. Swear to god I didn't realize that was bubblegum at first and was about to ask if Olimar D.Va was an offshoot of the gremlin.

I agree, Amano still does main title design but it was his choice to stop main character design, it's a lot of work. Especially considering how many characters are in your average Final Fantasy game. I'm actually not sure if he'll do art for future FF games, but they could hire him out freelance if he's still willing to do it. Of course, that's if they make another FF game at all.

There's this piece of the FF7 cast done by Amano, and it's quite cool. I guess in a roundabout way it's "Fanart", so does anyone have it handy? Unless I imagined it and it only had a few characters in it.

Yeah, he's done at least one promotional piece for each game after he stepped down. His art remains popular in Japan, he was famous before they hired him to do art for them, after all. He worked on anime and film works before he started working on video games.

I don't really like Amano's art when it comes to humans cause everyone looks deathly pale and thin. Him designing his own characters versus drawing renditions of existing characters in his style is a big difference though. Like, FF6's characters are fantastic while his renditions of FF7+ aren't that great, because he didn't design them from the ground up. Anyways,

If this wasn't sandwiched between 7 and 9, I'd have no clue what game this was for. They don't look anything like Squall or Rinoa. I like how the only character that has a hair color other than blonde is the one explicitly known as "Scarlet Hair". I notice the ones later on do start having each character's proper hair color.

Yeah, all his humans end up just being various off brand David Bowies and while that's cool, it's also a shtick that gets rather tired after a while. I really prefer the direction the art in the FF series has taken.
