He said in some interview that when he first played D&D he realized how much video games had borrowed/ripped off from the mechanics of tabletop roleplaying games.

Yeah this arc is pretty clearly influenced by the Zero Escape series which Griffin has mentioned in CGI that he's a huge fan of.
