I'm just arguing that they need to make humans almost impossibly superior, physically and intellectually, to the aliens in order to make it a fun game and allow the player to come back from the initial deficit. Not a thing wrong with that.

So how bad is the current time limit here, actually? I mean, clearly it's a mess since it seems to hit 2 pips simultaneously from now on, but is it just blacksites and plot missions from here on out, or is it still manageable?

I loved Enemy Unknown, but I played that thing for several ingame months more than I had to. I don't like time limits in games, even when they're reasonable (Pikmin 2 was the best of the trilogy, just for getting rid of that asinine day counter).

The only reason the time limit seems harsh is because we have to lay a lot of the groundwork to get to regions with the blacksites. Once all those sites are opened up it's very easy to keep the timer down.
The plot missions also take a big chunk off the doom ticker as well.

Yeah, you need to prep for actions that knock down the clock, about the only time you can get away with not being at most 1 contact away from a mission that'll stop the clock is the first time it happens. After that, you should be planning your expansion (base and geoscape) around closing in on alien facilities to blow them up.

Even with plot missions, unless you beeline for every facility as soon as it pops you're going to be spending most of the game within 3-4 pips from doom.

2 pips at a time isn't exactly normal, the game's just being an rear end in a top hat right now.

There's a reason that the aliens kinda aren't that smart. Part of it comes up here and there, most recently in the Archon autopsy cut-scene: the troops are all psychic slaves, rendered literally incapable of thinking for themselves, or at least close to it. Tactical limitations are the price of perfect obedience. Part of it was in the intro and the chip-research cut-scene: they'd been using the Commander to operate their military, and now they're reduced to their plan B, which being plan B is presumably not as effective.

As for why the Elders don't do it themselves, that's semi-explained later but spoiler territory for now.

One of the things the XCom games like to do with alien tech and powers is show that humans can be so much better than the aliens at that poo poo. Make better plasma cannons, use better psyonic powers, build better automatons... Short of a full-on jetpack and an actual Hulk soldier, anything the aliens can bring humanity will defeat, steal, break down, rebuild and improve upon.

I kinda like the way Xenonauts did it. The alien's plasma weapons are excellent... but they're really designed for use in vacuum. Using the lessons in power density, heat dissipation etc that they learnt from the plasma weapons human engineers are able to build gauss weapons that are better than plasma weapons for what we want to use them for.
Similarly, the UFOs are being retrofitted and used outside their design parameters. Endgame human craft are purpose-built for dogfighting in atmosphere, so they're better at it.

Hmm, what's new here?

Plot
Plot in an xcom game is a lot like plot in a porn movie - it's nice if it's there I guess, but that's not why we're watching. Even so, this plot is really stupid. The reason why DNA is able to do it's job is that it's a self-replicating molecule. That means that if the aliens want a lot of human DNA, they don't need to harvest humans on an industrial scale - they can just take a single cell from each suitable human and clone it.

Psi
Psi soldiers are really good but it takes a while for them to get going. One thing that is often overlooked is the flashbang grenade - remember those? On top of everything else the do, they also reduce will by 30, and this suddenly matters because so many psi abilities have their chance to succeed reduced by target will as a percentage.

Steady Hands vs Aim
Aim is only bad about 95% of the time. If you also have the Ranger skill that lets you hunker down for free, then it's a reasonable choice. That's another one of those "once per game if you're lucky" OTS combos.

DNA is also unique to each person, ignoring identical twins. If they're looking for some special combination in all that genetic diversity, it would make sense to accumulate as many variations of human DNA as possible.

I buy feet pics🍆

Yeah, but the implication is that they're melting people into goo when a single skin cell would do that without the genocide. We can, now, replicate DNA on an industrial scale, granted not full genomes, but given magical alien tech it's less incredible than distilling a trillion cells into slime.

The problem is that your DNA isn't completely identical. Cells can mutate, the individual expression of genes varies, these things matter if you're indexing human DNA in an attempt to make something. I'm not saying you need to do what the aliens are doing but if you want to be thorough and get all the possible genetic information from an individual you should take multiple samples, or at the least get pluripotent stem cells.

They're probably using the excess goo to make all the REDACTED anyway, got to get biomass from somewhere.

In a rather odd twist, it turns out that Processed Human DNA is the best glue in the universe. Now, as for what the aliens need the glue for, that's another question.
