Well, he seems to genuinely consider Shinji his friend, so this whole thing may be the only thing he looks forward to in his infinite number of eons-long lifetimes, so he takes the time to enjoy it while he can, before he has to break into Terminal Dogma and kick off the final phase of Evangelion. Classifying him as a villain is really oversimplifying his role. He's more like one of the good guys, but one who is ordained by fate to take on the facade of an enemy, for the good of the world (ultimately, he knows Shinji won't let him trigger Third Impact, but his attempt sets in motion a very important chain of events, as we'll see).

I can't honestly say that Kaworu thinks of Shinji as a friend or that Kaworu is 'a good guy' since every single time they meet Kaworu's actions make everything soooooo much worse for Shinji it isn't even funny. How many times can you force your 'friend' to murder you before you realize 'hey wait maybe I shouldn't be doing this to him.'

Then again, maybe that's the point. The one person in Shinji's life who says 'I love you' to him also doesn't understand the first thing about it no matter how many times he gets to redo it.

Well, okay, in the original series, things go super bad, but remember that it's apparently a superior outcome to the alternatives (i.e. Gendo or SEELE getting their way), and then contrast SRW, where things don't go nearly as badly because of Shinji's many cool friends. Just because things get worse momentarily doesn't mean they're worse forever, and sometimes it's a long-term improvement. And, yeah, there might be a way Kaworu could achieve the same results without traumatizing Shinji, but who would discard a good enough solution, and potentially risk the lives of basically everyone in that instance of the universe, in pursuit of some theoretical "perfect" solution with no guarantee of success?

No I mean in the sense that if Kaworu knows he has to die and is fine with it why is he continually making friends with the only person who can kill him? Even though he knows this will cause his supposed friend unimaginable pain, he still goes through with it every time.

It's more like emotional abuse than a friendship at that point.

Ah, I see what you mean. It's possible that the bond between the two of them is necessary for the subsequent events to play out properly, and that things might go even worse if Kaworu went out as "just another enemy". Without straying too much into spoiler territory, just consider the role Kaworu plays during the events of End of Evangelion, small as it was. Only Kaworu could bring down Shinji's AT Field, and only because of their friendship.

Given how things went in EoE, I'm not sure how the hell it could go worse.

I mean, killing Kaworu after making friends with him is what started the causal chain leading to Shinji sitting under the stairs waiting to die in EoE. If that hadn't happened, Shinji and Asuka might have been able to fight the Eva Series together, and maybe even win. Also, Kaworu's image brought down Shinji's AT Field because it let him take back the fact he murdered Kaworu.

Then again arguments for and against this kind of stuff run headlong into the fact that writing a story that takes all this poo poo into account is probably waaaaaay beyond SRW's wheelhouse, especially with a series as big on interpersonal relationships as NGE.

Well, okay, granted on the guilt part, but if Shinji hadn't gotten close to Kaworu, I doubt he'd have felt all that guilt, and Kaworu would've just been "the last Angel". Considering how badly curbstomped Asuka got and the mass-produced Spears of Longinus, it's extremely unlikely Shinji's joining in the battle against the EVA Series would have accomplished anything. And remember, if Shinji's AT Field didn't collapse, he wouldn't have been able to become the determinant will of Instrumentality, which he ultimately rejected, saving the world, give or take. It's implied that without that guiding will, everyone would have just died right there in Third Impact, and Rei didn't seem to have any contingencies planned for if Shinji didn't get absorbed. Remember, "how it could go worse" in this case is "the world ends and all of humanity is wiped out forever". And ultimately, I think one of the core themes of NGE is how all that bad poo poo that happened to Shinji ultimately helped him grow and mature as a person, stop hating himself, and find some meaning in his life, and so on, opinions on the actual execution of those themes notwithstanding.

No it didn't. All the bad poo poo that happened to him resulted in turbofucking the world with the loss of everything and everyone he ever cared about. That's what happens when you don't communicate and no one bothers to help you with your problems.

And the words that kick off Third Impact are Shinji telling Rei 'Nobody wants me. So everybody, just go, and die." That 'guiding will' resulted in EVERYONE DYING.

Well, now we're just debating personal interpretations of the ending of EoE. It's left extremely ambiguous, but Shinji ultimately rejected Instrumentality, realizing that there's value to life and existence. "Everyone dying" is an extremely pessimistic view of that ending, given that we see basically nothing of the results of Shinji's decision, we only know, if memory serves, that humanity was given the individual choice to either return to life, or continue being Tang. As for what happened to the world, do you think what SEELE or Gendo had planned would have been a better outcome? Pretty sure the world was turbofucked from the moment the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. But, I tend to be a glass-half-full kind of person, maybe the ending was literally all that happened, and Shinji and Asuka both starved to death staring at a vast orange ocean.

Helena reports to Bähbem that contact has been lost with “them”; she presumes that after the long period of time spent dormant, the main unit’s fully regenerated. Bähbem isn’t too surprised, considering what they were dealing with – this was bound to happen and, now, this alliance became unnecessary.
What to do, then? Bähbem tells Helena to leave it be – “that man” has already more than served his purpose as a diversion. Besides, his plans are going so smoothly that he no longer needs it as a weapon of last resort. Helena seems bothered by his decision but Bähbem tells her not to be. There is already a deterrent in place to deal with the thing – the squadron Ollin was assigned to.
But that is not what’s important right now. Bähbem tells Helena to begin their preparations – her time has arrived. She reluctantly agrees...

Location: Near Earth

Cut to the Argama, Bright’s receiving intel that the Giganos lunar HQ has suddenly gone dark. And it’s not just there: communication with any structures in a wide radius of the place are out. Did Giganos remnants capture them? Quattro doesn’t think so, not only considering the abundance of Feds stationed around there after Moonraker but also the significant losses the Giganos suffered in Bagration. They couldn’t pull something like that.
Did some accident happen to cut the comms, then? Hmm. As we ponder, a transmission comes in from Prof. Kasshu at the La Vie En Rose… and he brings grave news. He tells Domon to listen carefully: not long ago, he received a request from the Federation to investigate some anomalies detected within the occupied Giganos territory.
Taking a look at data from recon pods, he’s figured out what happened. The entire region that’s gone silent has been taken over… by the Devil Gundam. Rain asks if he’s sure and, indeed, he’d recognize the energy readings anywhere. Domon and Rain don’t understand where the hell the Gundam itself had been hiding all this time considering we’d only run into his Kings and the Death Army.
Still, Raizou says they’ll need to figure that out later. The revived Devil Gundam’s at least as strong as it was before – if not more – and Raizou also has a very bad feeling about where it’s taken up residence. As everyone starts realizing what he means, Bright orders full speed to the Giganos HQ.

As we’re arriving in Giganos territory, Harry’s already receiving a video feed from still active bases about what’s going on… the Devil Gundam’s infected the Giganos Mass Driver.
DG Cells are covering the area from top to bottom, rebuilding the weapon completely – one of the worst possible things it could’ve jacked, Min grunts. Kyral dubs it the Devil Mass Driver, the union of two accursed weapons.
Maillot certainly didn’t expect the thing he’d destroyed at Guiltorre’s request to come back like that and Ruri orders everyone ready to deploy. We’re getting over there right now.

Mission 50 – The Victors’ Elegy

: HYEHEHEHEHE! We’ve been expecting you, Domon Kasshu!
: Michelo Chariot…!
: Check it out, bro! The Mass Driver’s even bigger than in the vid!
: Its energy readings are increasing rapidly… Inside, we’ll likely find…
: The Grand Master Gundam… and the Devil Gundam itself, right?
: R-Right…!
: Which means it’s Ulube Ishikawa commanding Michelo…!
: The guy’s trying to absorb Earth and destroy humanity again?!
: “Destroy”?! HAH! That’s NOT what we’re up to! Humanity’s already FINISHED! It’ll happen, SOONER OR LATER! We don’t even NEED to help with that!
: What do you mean by that?!
: The MU flying cities! This world’ll END if they keep spreading as they have! SURELY you know that!
: But if the world’s already screwed, what the hell are you monsters trying to do?!
: HYAAHAHAHA! I can tell you… but, FIRST, you’ll have to offer me your LIFE!
: Fine. My fists can just as well make you explain why you came back to life and what your goal is!
: BRING IT! I’ll send you to the SAME PLACE Master Asia and Schwartz ARE!
: “Same place”…? Don’t make me laugh!
: WHAAAT?!

: My master, Schwarz… and Kyouji are all alive within my heart!!
: HAH! What a LOAD of crap!
: And I would never expect a man who’s sold his soul to the devil to understand the bond between our hearts!
: “BONDS”?!
: That’s right! Fuunsaiki! To me!!
: !!

: My fists have inherited my master’s soul…! And they’ll once again shatter you and that monster!!
: Here I go!!

: This hand of mine is burning red!!

: Its loud roar tells me to grasp victory!!

: By my name as the King of Hearts of the Shuffle Alliance, I now draw upon the ultimate arts of the School of the Undefeated of the East!!
: HYAHAHAHAHA! Come on, then, Domon! COME OOON!!
: Hmhmhm… Domon’s spirit is quite the nostalgic sight. It brings me back to our previous showdown with that monstrosity.
: Well, we’ve got our World Gundam Federation right here. You guys wanna do that thing again?
: Ooh, I know what he means! You and the other Gundams did that spinny thing, right, Amuro?
: Y-Yeah… It just kind of happened.
: Heheh… but this time the World Gundam Federation does not fight alone. Now we stand side-by-side with so many more brave comrades.
: We beseech you, friends! Lend us your strength once more!
: Hah, you ain’t even gotta ask that!
: We couldn’t just dangerous stuff like that running loose.
: And that weapon has long since stopped being an instrument of justice!
: We will not allow our homes – our green Earth – to be destroyed!
: That demon butchered my life… and now I’ll settle accounts with it once and for all!
: Then we now forge the World Super Robot Federation! We ante up Earth’s fate and, together, we shall emerge victorious!
: Our homeworld hangs in the balance! Race and nationality mean nothing now!
: Justice transcends planets and species… And in its name, we strike down evil for all those who love peace!!
: Our offensive against the Devil Mass Driver begins now! All units, deploy!!

: DOMON! Time to sound the FINAL GONG!!
: And that’s exactly what I want! GUNDAM FIGHT!!
: REEAADYY!!
: GOOOOO!!

All the Shuffle Alliance, Rain and the Garmraid have deployed as events. Losing them (or the ships) is a game over, so keep an eye out if you haven’t kept them up to speed.

First wave of Death Army mooks are weaker than the rest, easily oneshottable.

The Chars are leading the attack on the left side.

Upgraded, Maillot’s an even bigger monster.

The Death Birdies are stronger, so Boss and Tetsuya take one out together.
Camille and Judau do the same.

Last weak Soldier-Type.

It actually barely survived but Hokuto took care of that.

I positively love how absurdly cheap Twin Laser Sword is.

As our left flank is positively shredding the opposition, it’s time for the right one to get to work.

Thanks, Werner.

Kill ten enemies and eight more will spawn. Puru Two says that won’t stop until we destroy the main unit.

This actually isn’t true, likely because Banpresto realized how easy it’d be to use that to rake in loadsa money. You’ll only get three waves of enemy reinforcements, after which they’ll simply stop coming.

Back to work.

Alright.

Last Soldier falls to Sai and Chibodee, Domon oneshotting a nearby Birdy.

Enemy Phase!

Chapman wastes no time sniping you from across the map.

Thanks, Kouji.

Domon takes another Birdy, Argo and Chibodee triggering their Super Modes.

The more distant mooks are hanging back, though.

Player Phase!

So we take the fight to them.

Two down.

Quattro and Kaine, together, take another pair. Another wave of reinforcements pops out.

I won’t bother too much with them, though.

Just enough to get morale for everyone.

Sent a couple of Supers to the east flank, Kazuya and the Mazinger wrecking a couple of Soldiers.

Hugo’s pretty much invincible here because there’s no way these mooks are popping his barrier.

That’s one for him, another for Argo.

Enemy Phase!

Stuff on the west side wastes their move getting rebuffed by Kaine and Masato. East, Domon holds them at bay. Last wave of reinforcements pops out.

Player Phase!

*Alarm!*

: What is it?!
: Something’s headed this way, Jun!
: How…? This entire sector should be blockaded by the Federation!
: Unit ID’ed! I-It’s—!

: …
: The Medius Locus! drat it, why now?!
: Albero…!
: Hey now… you think they’re here to try to absorb the Devil Gundam?!
: Hmph… absolutely not.
: …
: Then, what, you’re here to bury the past for good?!
: I am. The Devil Gundam brought my time to a full stop and, today, I’ll set it in motion again…!
: You’re still—!
: Don’t take this the wrong way, Hugo.
: What’s that supposed to mean, Albero?!
: I told you before. I want to get revenge against that demon… by surpassing it.
: …!
: “Surpass”, you say… and how are you going to do that if not by having the Medius absorb it?!
: In order to defeat the Devil Gundam, I needed power beyond what it has… That’s what I’ve been fighting your group for.
: Then you’re saying you came here to defeat the Devil Gundam…?!
: Do you really think we’re gonna buy into that?!
: I’m not asking you to believe me. But, yes, the Devil Gundam is an enemy I want to destroy – same as you.
: …And do you agree with him, Ms. Mitte?
: Yes. That was the last order we were given.
: Order…?
: And who exactly gave you that order?
: Now that would be telling.
: Ms. Mitte…!
: If the Devil Gundam is destroyed here, my AI1 and the Medius will be one-of-a-kind… and I’m willing to cooperate with you to make that happen.
: …!
: And just how are we supposed to let you go after saying that sorta crap?!
: Then, please, do try to fight us. But that is assuming you can face both the Medius and the Devil Gundam in tandem, yes?
: I’ll take my chances! You stay right there!!
: Stop, Sai Saici!
: Why?!
: Our priority here is to destroy the Devil Gundam… And if Albero’s saying the same, then we don’ need to fight him right now.
: You believe him, then?
: I didn’t say that… but the Devil Gundam’s a shackle around our feet. We won’t be able to move on if we don’t break them loose.
: Plus, I… I don’t wanna feel what I felt when my Cry Wolves comrades died again.
: (Hugo…)
: …
: Albero, the time to settle the score with that thing is long gone…!
: I know. Today, we’ll just be freeing ourselves from our shackles.
: Roger that… captain.

And we get to control the Medius! Losing it is a game over but you REALLY need to screw up for that to happen.

Rush of nostalgia. Only needed Master Asia around to make it legit. :qq:

Crits mean things die, which is about half that group.

And from here on out it’s merely clean up. There are no more enemies spawning, so we’ll take the battered Death Army units down quickly.

Fast forward a turn…

And we’re ready to start, with Masato handily taking a big bite out of all midbosses.

:black101:

: Uuuuurgh!! Regen!! REGEN!!
: Graaaaargh! The… THE REGEN ISN’T KEEPING UP!!
: That’s the end for you, Michelo Chariot!
: Sh-Shut your TRAP! The DG Cells are supposed to be invincible! INVINCIBLE!!
: We won’t even bother cooking you into friend chicken today! This time, we’ll just crush you to dust!
: GYAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!

: GWAAAAARGH!
: Monsieur Chapman… your struggles have already ended. In honor of your once-heroic self… we now free you from the devil’s bondage.
: So long, Champ…!
: !!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwLpducuCYI
Domon’s finally taken off the kiddie gloves and got/regained a new attack as a result!

: … You were my dark side. But not anymore – there’s no room for something like you inside my heart!
: Because Domon, Rain and all my friends have filled that space…!

: We’ve confirmed the destruction of the Grand, Walter and Heaven’s Sword Gundams!
: But the main unit’s still around! Stay frosty, everyone!
: We’re detecting a big energy spike within the Mass Driver!

*Death Army units despawn.*

: H-Huh?!
: The Death Army’s disappeared…!
: A-All the enemy units were absorbed into the Mass Driver!
: They’re returning their energy…! Then, it should be—!

*RUUUUUMBLE!*

: What happened?!
: Th-There’re some major tremors at the base of the Devil Mass Driver! An enormous object is emerging from within!!
: Hrm… just like the last time!
: Hm. Here it comes!

: Heheheheh…
: Ulube… Ulube Ishikawa!
: Why, it’s been ages, Domon Kasshu.
: So you really were the one behind Michelo’s group!
: That’s right, Gundam of Gundams… or, rather, King of Hearts.
: Then, I’ll have some answers, Ulube! Why did you and the Devil Gundam come back to life?! What are you truly after?!
: Very well… considering you’re about to die, I see no reason not to indulge you.
: I was, indeed, meant to have disappeared after the lot of you beat me before. But, then, a certain group came and collected some of my cells.
: “Collected”…?!
: Hm. Like me, they had an interest in the three principles behind the DG Cells… They’d been waiting for a chance to get their hands on some samples for a while.
: What…?!
: They had studied the Devil Gundam and DG Cells thoroughly and already had the resources, materials and technology to create more. After our previous showdown was over, they collected various DG Cell samples before Prof. Kasshu’s vaccine destroyed them all.
: And among those samples, there were a few fragments of Ulube Ishikawa.
: “Fragments”?! Then you’re…!
: A clone, yes. Revived, stimulated and grown from bits of my original, just like your own duplicates… That said, I am no mere copy. By applying one of the three principles of the DG Cells – self-evolution – I have exceeded my original…
: Indeed, you may call me SUPER ULUBE!
: S-Super Ulube…?!
: Yeesh, couldn’t you think of something better than that?
: Seriously. That’s on the same level as “Boss”.
: Wh-Whatchu say?! You wanna go?!
: Easy! Now’s not the time for that!
: And who were those people who brought you back to life, Ulube?
: Hmhmhm… it’s someone you’re very familiar with.
: The Bähbem Foundation.
: !!
: Ernst Von Bähbem is the mastermind behind this…?!
: drat, I sure didn’t expect TERRA’s patron to be the man behind the curtains. Nergal ain’t got nothing on that guy.
: But why would the Bähbem Foundation bring back the Devil Gundam…?!
: That, I do not know.
: Excuse me…?!
: But the old man did revive us all and, in returned, demanded that we found and stole the Star of La Mu.
: !!
: That’s why you attacked Mutropolis so many times?!
: But why would the Bähbem Foundation be after the Star of La Mu…?
: He said it was to wipe out the Mulians… but it didn’t matter to me.
: …!
: The Devil Gundam required huge amounts of energy to restore all its functions and, at that, our interests aligned with Bähbem. We wanted the Star of La Mu simply because it is the source of tremendous energy.
: So that’s why you once attacked GEAR... you wanted the Data Weapons to help you obtain energy?
: That’s right; it’s their nature to be attracted to powerful energy sources. Still, we no longer need the Data Weapons or Bähbem’s help!
: It took a long period of hiding but the Devil Gundam has finally been completely restored! There is no longer any force in the world that can stop us! MWAHAHAHAHA!
: And just what are your plans for the Devil Gundam now?!
: Isn’t it obvious? I’ll use the Devil Mass Driver to blast the Devil Gundam towards Earth… the DG Cells will cover and transform the entire planet, and I will rule supreme over everything!
: Psh! So it’s the same crap as before?!
: Call it whatever you wish! This world will soon meet its end anyway!
: But with the DG Cells, I’ll continue to evolve… and I’ll grow to stand at the apex of all life! I’ll grow to be an eternal being, even!
: Oh, yes! This battle can well be seen as a ritual – a ritual for me to transcend all humans! To transcend even God! AHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
: Well, at least he’s a kind of easy-to-understand baddie…
: But it’s the simplicity of his goals that makes him dangerous. He’s not bothered by things like doubt and confusion.
: Yeah. This guy just wants to destroy everyone except himself.
: But the Devil Gundam hasn’t a life unit right now. Meaning it shouldn’t be strong enough to pull off something like that.
: Oho, now this is unexpected… Albero Est of the Cry Wolves. I presume you’re here because of that snippet of “intel” I gave you back then?
: Of course I am. My squad was all but destroyed because of the weapon you gave us.
: What…?! Is that true, captain?!
: Hm. Ulube handed me an energy cannon prior to that Op. The thing energized the Devil Gundam… and the rest is history.
: Then… it’s because of him that Foglia and the others…!
: … Still, it was my hand that set it all in motion.
: …
: Heheheh… And you took that Medius Locus to find some closure? Still, what can that mere copy of the Devil Gundam possibly do here?
: That’s where you’re wrong. The Medius does not require a core life unit – only my AI1—
: Don’t be ridiculous! Your unit is a bootleg Devil Gundam! As for the life unit, I see dozens of candidates right before me!!
: You mean us?!
: I am! Men and women, owners of strong bodies and minds, creators of new life…
: Thine name is Magnate Ten!
: Oh, shut the hell up! There’s no way we’re just gonna let you absorb us just like that!
: That’s right! We won’t bend our knees to the DG Cells!
: Hmhmmhm… But, of course, I’m not about to make the same mistakes again. I’ll use any and all means to crush you.
: !
: Come! Show yourself, Devil Gundam!!

: drat, he’s already gone and played his ace in the hole?!
: That’s right… And with the Grand Master Gundam and Devil Gundam fighting together, it’ll be so very simple to make you all part of me!
: Go, Devil Gundam! Feast on them to your heart’s content! And together we’ll transcend and rule all! We’ll be eternal!!
: Silence! You are no more than a worthless leech, desperately clinging and bloating yourself with power!!
: Your grunting means nothing to he who’s becoming God!
: “God”? You gotta be joking!
: Indeed, you are nothing like God…
: The only title you deserve is of “Devil”…!
: And the Devil’s gotta get right back down to Hell!
: Fools! It is you who’ll be seeing hell as your still-living selves are devoured by me!
: Then, come and face the School of the Undefeated of the East – the winds of the king! Once again, we’ll send you and the Devil Gundam spiraling down into the abyss!!

Same goes for the Devil Gundam proper, packing stats just as high as Ulube’s and with even greater accuracy. 30% HP regen is a lot, so don’t waste attacks until it’s go time.
Hits even harder (further boosted by its LL size) and with longer range than the Grand Master Gundam, too.

Let’s get straight to it, then, starting with Ulube.

: Urk… it’s regenerating!
: It doesn’t have a life unit but it’s regen speed is even faster than before…!
: You think it’s converting the force of our attacks into energy…?!
: HAHAHAHAHA! You shouldn’t assume we’re the same as before!
: N-Now what do we do? Our attacks won’t do jack if it’s just gonna heal everything!
: Omoikane, analyze the data from the previous battle against the Devil Gundam and get me some confirmation.
: …
: Did you figure something out, Ruriruri?
: …It’s true that all its functions have been enhanced but the overall structure itself still seems to be the same.
: Meaning Ulube’s Gundam is acting as the Devil Gundam’s power source?
: Right, so we should destroy it first. And while this isn’t ground-breaking strategy, I believe it can be done if we overwhelm its regeneration with more damage than it can handle.
: Roger that. All units concentrate your attacks on the Grand Master Gundam! Ignore the Devil Gundam proper before that one’s down!

So, yeah, if you attack the Devil Gundam at all while the Grand Master’s still around, it’ll just regen to full. So, don’t!

: Heh, I suppose you’ve also improved since our last battle…!
: HOWEVER! That is still nothing compared to me!! Hrrrrrmm!!

: Whaat?!
: It’s regenning just as fast as the Devil Gundam!
: MWAHAHAHA! I told you we weren’t the same as before!
: drat, that creep’s really stronger than his original?!
: Hahaha! And let’s see how you enjoy this!

: Th-The enemy unit’s bombarding the entire area!
: All troops, evasive maneuvers!!
: HAAHAHAHAHA! It’s useless, useless, USELESS, USELESS!!
: I am the strongest being alive! I am invincible! Eternal! I AM GOD!!
: Oi… seems like we’ve been getting a lot of guys like him these days.
: I’m afraid you might be right…
: Well, aren’t we confident! But it’s fact that your power cannot defeat me!!
: Hmph, true. We’re not taking him down with power alone.
: Then we’re just gonna have to have our souls pound him into the dirt! Bro!
: Right!
: Hrm?! What?!

:ssj: :ssj:

: We are the Shuffle Alliance! The Queen of Spades!!

: The Black Joker!

: The Jack of Diamonds!

: The Ace of Clubs!

: And the King of Hearts!!

: Y-You’re?!

*All five Shuffles gather round.*

: You’re going to do that?!
: My master once taught me…
: That Mother Earth, our blue planet, is the greatest life of all!!
: !!
: And I will not tolerate anyone who’d try to defile it!
: We are the Shuffle Alliance! Open your eyes and behold the flames of our souls!!

: C-Curse you!!
: Whoa…!
: That’s the Shuffle Alliance Attack…!
: Indeed, it is the radiance of their souls…!
: Gh—Rrrgh! The regeneration isn’t keeping up!
: Now, everyone! Take him down!!
: I won’t be beaten, Domon Kasshu! I WON’T!!

: I-I won’t die! I am invincible! IMMORTAL!
: It’s high time you admitted defeat, Ulube!
: drat it…! In that case!!
: Devil Gundam! Take me! Make me your life unit!!

: H-he!!
: He fused with the Devil Gundam?!
: MWAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
: Ulube…!
: Now that I’ve become one with the Devil Gundam, any chance of victory you’ve had has just gone up in smoke!!
: Bow before me, fools! Praise and worship me! You’ll live forever as part of me – GOD!
: Never! None of us want or need to live forever!
: We end everything here and now, Ulube Ishikawa!!
: Then come!
: GUNDAM FIGHT!!
: REAAADYYY!!
: GOOOOOO!!

Now I could play by the rules and let Domon take the finishing blow but…

I reckon they deserve a bit of payback. Plus, here’s Albero’s strongest attack!

: Uurgh! I won’t die! I WON’T DIIIIE!!
: Devil Gundam! Give me all of your power!!

: O-Oi, he’s still going?!
: Rain!!
: I know!

: AHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHA! None of this matters! You’re also finished, fated to end like me!!
: The MU will continue to spread and the Gulfer homeworld is headed for Earth! Destruction is all that awaits humanity!!
: Wh-What did you say?!
: The Gulfer homeworld…?!
: Then, that signal really was…!
: Continue to flounder about as you have! You’re already living on borrowed time! Cry and scream as your destruction draws closer and closer!
: This world is already done! Hahahah…HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

: The Devil Gundam’s signal has disappeared completely!
: And the Mass Driver’s also powering down!
: …
: Albero… now—
: … This isn’t over yet. You folks still have things to do.
: What…?!
: Make sure that the DG Cells are all truly gone from the world this time.
: You’re leaving without dealing with us?
: …Let’s go, Elde.
: Yes…

*Off they go.*

: Captain… you’re…

Goodies today are a Martian Donburi, Ultimate Cells (10% HP regen) and a Shuffle Crest.

Over by Misumaru’s place, Genpachirou reports that they’ve confirmed the detected object passing by the Solar System’s eighth defensive line. Indeed, it’s the Gulfer homeworld and Misumaru is rather impressed that they were able to haul the thing all the way over here.
Genpachirou says that the thing’s very well camouflaged, so they moved in undetected until the people at the Hisago Plan’s terminal colonies could get an eyes-on confirmation. The homeworld’s course was also rather far away from the Martian and Jupiter Spheres, so that delayed its discovery. At least it also means those civilians weren’t attacked.

Still, Prospector notes, being past the eighth line means they’re between Mars and Earth – if nothing is done, they’ll reach here and invade. On that matter, Genpachirou says that the Fifth Space Corps Fleet was garrisoned on Mars, so they can help. Problem is, the Earth is still a mess thanks to the MU and Genpachirou is loath to take their troops away in case of a MU attack.
The Federation’s also busy assisting with TERRA’s plan, so… surprise, the better option is to have the Magnate Ten deal with the Gulfer homeworld. Prospector says Nergal’s got a prototype deep space booster that can be equipped on the non-Boson Jumping Nahel Argama to make for quite the speedy round trip to the Gulfer homeworld.
Meanwhile, Misumaru and Genpachirou will start coordinating with the Fifth Fleet.

I liked the game pointing out that Chapman was a genuinely good guy before, the series proper seems to completely forget this the moment he becomes a DG zombie, despite him being a literal zombie with no guilt here, unlike Michelo.

The Super Ulube moment was a very nice reference to SUPER ASIA...but he's far from cool enough to deserve doing such a reference.

It might be that Banpresto hadn't yet figured out how to really handle infinite enemy reinforcements, and that's why they limited the Devil Gundam's backup. In Alpha Gaiden, infinite G-Bits spawned around DOME as you blew them up during the first part of the mission to get into DOME, but if you destroyed too many, the game would lock up (either immediately when the G-Bits would reinforce, or, if you destroy just barely enough to not lock up then, the game will lock up when you start the second phase of the mission, when the Frost Brothers and their mooks would spawn). My guess as to why is that the game tracked every enemy on the field, including those that have been destroyed, so if you have too many, it runs out of memory in which to store the enemies. So, after that little bug, I think Banpresto avoided doing infinite reinforcements for a while.

By the way, as an aside, I find it interesting how much Banpresto likes fooling around with the Devil Gundam, switching its pilot around and having it fuse with different stuff (as it did with Giganos' mass driver this time around). In a couple games (at least A and 64), they have Wong taking control rather than Ulube, either of the main Devil Gundam or the Grandmaster Gundam, and in 64, rather than fusing with one of G Gundam's space colonies, the Devil Gundam uses Axis. Shin Super Robot Wars takes the cake, though, as Gosterro from SPT Layzner pilots it for the final battle of that one. By the way, in checking to find the more out-there Devil Gundam variations, I found that Kyral Mekirel is available in another SRW, he's a secret character in 64.

I'm waiting for Shapiro Keats to jack the Devil Gundam. I'm pretty sure that guy has piloted more mechs from outside his series than anyone else, possibly combined. Guess that's what happens when your canon mech is given basically zero exposition.

Shame that OG didn't have Albero join up as a temporary ally, despite some perfect setups to do so. It was kind of nice to use the Medius Locus, the main rival unit, for a little bit here in this stage.

The Shuffle Alliance Attack is THE strongest weapon in the game. Useful only if you're running a game with all the Shuffles on your regular team, though.

Love-Love Tenkyo Ken is weaker than that but stronger than Double God Finger, turns Domon into an even bigger boss killer and Rain's an easy unit to fit in a team. Keep her back, playing support, and bring her in when going for a boss. Not as spammable as Twin Laser Sword or Double Burning Fire, of course, but it propels Rain a whole lot higher in the deployment priority (especially if you've picked G Gundam as the favorite series).

Rain’s just finished her scans and confirms that all traces of DG Cells have vanished. And just in case, Prof. Kasshu coordinated with Nergal to have a new vaccine created and spread throughout the area. The Devil Gundam should be dead for good now, much to her and Domon’s relief.
But Hugo asks what about Bähbem and his hand in this whole mess. Should we ignore him and his foundation? For the moment, yes. Ruri figures Bähbem’s done using the DG Cells or he’d have done more to obstruct us – guess the DG Cells are no longer necessary to his plans. Ruri posits that, like Albero, Bähbem just wanted the things gone now. Speaking of Albero, Domon wonders what he’ll be doing with the Medius now that he’s carried out his revenge.

Indeed, Hugo finds the whole thing odd: time and again Albero tried to kill him but, yesterday, he backed off without ever firing a shot in his direction. On the flip side, it was also because of Albero’s quick retreat that we managed to easily eradicate all remaining DG Cells. Were all the attempts he took on Hugo’s life simply to make the Medius strong enough to beat the Devil Gundam?
One thing does bother Rain: Elde said they were ordered by someone to destroy the Devil Gundam. Who? And, on that subject, what is Elde’s own endgame?

: Ms. Mitte!
: What is it, Aqua?
: I’ve got a question regarding the lesson you just gave.
: Alright… but could you wait for just a moment?

*Beep, beep.*

: Hm? What are you working on?
: The specs of a combat AI I’m currently developing.
: Wow… these are pretty impressive.
: Oh? You can make sense of them?
: Well, I am your student.
: It’s a model for behavioral analysis and prediction… with an OS based around a quasi-personality?
: Correct. I designed it based on hints I picked up during a past job for a certain organization.
: Hmhmm… You really love your job, huh? What a waste…
: What do you mean?
: Well, you’re really popular around the resident men. Don’t tell me you didn’t know?
: No, I simply do not care. This AI is everything to me right now.
: Oh, no, Ms. Mitte! But what about us, your students?
: What, indeed… But, moreover, I’ll be leaving the military academy soon.
: Huh…?! Were you hired for another job? Has it something to do with that AI…?
: It does not but I’m afraid it is classified. Surely a cadet such as you knew that.
: Y-Yes…
: Either way, Aqua… are you truly certain you want to be a mobile weapon’s pilot?
: I am. It’s something I’ve always wanted, back during those tedium-filled days back home. I want to put things to practice and test them out with my own two hands.
: Why is that?
: I can’t stand the thought of being a caged bird anymore. I want to live by my own strength and choose how I want that life to be.
: Now that is a waste. If you stayed with your family and leveraged your favorable environment and status, you could accomplish so much more. Even greater prosperity could be yours than what you have now.
: And that’s why I couldn’t stand it there.
: I see… then I want you to keep something in mind.
: Yes?
: You are an excellent student but your lack of emotional control is your greatest weakness. A pilot must always be capable of keeping a level head to analyze the situation and respond appropriately. If you do not learn how to do that… it might cost you your life, understood?
: Yes… I understand, Ms. Mitte.

: (… A dream…?)
: (Ms. Mitte… just what are you…?)

*Bzzzt!*

: Aqua, there’s a transmission coming from Maj. Katsuragi for you and Hugo.
: From Maj. Katsuragi…? Alright, I’ll be right over.

Misato passes along news of Mitall’s assassination and how Elde’s the likely suspect. Misato says there were some things she was worried about, so she did some digging into the Tsentr Project. When Aqua asks what was it that prompted that investigation, she tells of Elde being listed as a third-party consultant in the MAGI’s development.
Hugo didn’t expect that woman to be involved with NERV and Aqua sees that that was the job Elde mentioned inspired the development of AI1. Furthermore, Misato suspects her ties to NERV and SEELE have lasted to this day. Were they the ones who’ve been ordering her and Albero? That’s not clear yet.
Still, thanks to Elde’s murder of Mitall, the Tsentr Project has been brought pretty much to a halt. Whether she did it of her own volition or under someone else’s command is still under investigation.

Hugo wonders why he and Aqua weren't informed sooner of the murder and of the Tsentr Project’s suspension. Misato doubts that happened by an accident, figuring the Project itself has a major tie to NERV and SEELE – something neither Hugo and Aqua nor the Federation are in on.
Regardless, she’ll let us know as soon as she finds out more, so we should focus on the mission at hand. With that, she signs off. Seems like there’s a lot more going on in the shadows that Hugo and Aqua expected.
But that’s a discussion for later and the alarm starts blaring.

MXP adds this bit, following Misato signing off:

This news raises a question from Aqua: what will happen to Hugo's medicine now that Mitall's dead? Well, he still has a stash left and the adjustments Mitall gave him way back when made the medicine a whole lot more effective... though he still can't go without it. So who'll make more of the stuff when Hugo needs it? Well, he figures the guy kept data on the synthesizing process stored someway, so we'd need to get our hands on that.
And if Elde erased that data when she killed Mitall? Then that'd be a big problem. The amount of medicine Hugo's got left might be enough to last him through this but it'll be a tight squeeze. And when Aqua asks, he says that if he fully runs out of the stuff, his body'll seize up like it did before. And some time after that, the organic components of his will simply shut down - he'd die, in other words.

Aqua asks if we couldn't run some analysis on the medicine he has to figure out the ingredients and make it ourselves? If that was possible, Hugo'd have done it ages ago. It takes some very special ingredients to synthesize the thing - ingredients that only Mitall knew how to create. All signs point that we'd need to get back to Mitall's lab and try to find all that but we hardly have the time to do so now. Hugo says it'll be a race to see if whether us taking out the Medius or him running out of medicine will happen first.
Aqua doesn't like that and is about to tell him to get to Mitall's lab ASAP when the alarm sounds.

Ginga and Hokuto are getting the news that the Gulfer have already brought their entire goddamn homeworld over to our system. The Space Corps Fifth Fleet has already set out from Mars and is at an intercept course – we’ll be heading there as well, once we’ve met up with the commander of the next operation. Who is it? Enter the Gulfer Chips! Absolute and Witter find the bridge to be a bit cramped for their tastes but Gurumei figures it’s good enough for human usage.
Hokuto, Kirakuni and Eris are gobsmacked that these guys are apparently commanding the operation but, thankfully, Altair is on hand. He tells us not to worry as, like Subaru, they are also free of the Gulfer’s command. The Chips no longer have anywhere to return to, so they figured they were better off helping Subaru and our crew.

On Shibuya’s own recommendation, Altair will be leading our team against the Gulfer homeworld. Altair remembers his years as captain of the Gulfer royal guard and the torment he rained upon the peoples of so many worlds; yes, he was under mind control, but he still takes his crimes to be too great. Not even with the Gulfer’s destruction could make up for it.
Still, if there’s anything he can be of use for, then he’ll see that it is done. With that, Bright wants to get the briefing started immediately and asks for everyone to be gathered.

So here’s the deal: the Gulfer homeworld is on its way to Earth, with the Fifth Fleet in pursuit. They haven’t engaged the aliens yet, mind, and Quattro figures they’re waiting our arrival in the area to start. Altair confirms, saying that only with ours and the Dendoh’s strength can the Gulfer be completely defeated.
And how will we pull that off? By destroying the Gulfer Emperor, kernel of the entire organization, at said homeworld – once he’s one, all other units will shut down. Kaine and Kouji see the parallel with Screw Nail, a precision strike at the enemy’s boss.
But the biggest hurdle to cross will be reaching the Emperor in the first place. Altair’s brought a diagram of the Gulfer homeworld and points out a moon orbiting the planet – mind, it is no mere celestial body. It is, in fact, a satellite that discharges a powerful energy shield around the entire planet. The camouflage provided by that shield is also the reason why our detection of the thing was delayed.

Jet surmises the plan: if we want to make it down to the Gulfer homeworld, that “moon” needs to go first. But, thankfully, we’ll only need to keep our sights set on the Emperor himself as the Fifth Fleet will handle the shield. Ryouko likes only having to worry about stomping the big bad.
Not that it’ll be an easy thing to do, Altair warns – we’ll be facing not the Spiral Castle but against the entirety of the Gulfer in this next battle. Indeed, Jim remembers the problems that come with storming the enemy HQ from our attack at the Demon Castle.
Kaine wonders if we couldn’t Boson Jump all the way into the planet with the Nadesico but Ruri vetoes the idea. First, Ines is still recovering on the moon after the major strain of navigating the jump to Mars; secondly, unlike the attack on the Successors, it’d be too dangerous for Ruri to hack the Gulfer’s systems. They might have viruses like Ragou’s set up as a counter-play for anyone who tries that.

Finally, Ruri also thinks it’d be best to save the Boson Jump only for an emergency. Doesn’t this qualify as an emergency, Ryouma asks. She concedes that the Gulfer are a mighty enemy but it’s one we’re better off dealing with via normal means – she’d rather not leave the Nahel Argama flying solo out here while we attack.
Vega figures Ruri’s planning for the aftermath of our assault and, regardless, Bright says the Argama CAN make the trip to the Gulfer homeworld with the new booster sent by Nergal. We’ll be setting off in thirty minutes, so he tells everyone to get ready.

: OOOKAY! It’s finally time for the big showdown with the Gulfer! We’re gonna have to work real hard to cover for Ayato and Shinji’s crew – and to protect all the other folks on Earth, too!
: That’s a fine spirit, Ginga, and it’ll grant you strength. Never forget what you’re feeling right now.
: You got it! I’m hyped and ready to go!
: …
: Is something wrong, Subaru…?
: I’m just a bit jealous of Ginga…
: Ah…?
: I used to be a Gulfer, though not anymore… Still, I’m also not an earthling. I’ve no place where I belong, people that I want to protect or anyone waiting for my return…
: Subaru…
: That is not true, Subaru. There is a place where you belong.
: Brother…
: He’s right, Subaru. And that place is right here with us, with the Magnate Ten!
: …I see… I do feel like I want to stay with you, Ginga, Eris and everyone else… Is this what companionship feels like?
: Indeed, Subaru. And it’s that knowledge that proves you’re no longer a Gulfer.
: Brother… I’ll be taking part on the Gulfer homeworld offensive as well.
: Subaru…
: I’ve always stood by my father’s… rather, by the Gulfer Emperor’s side. If the homeworld’ll be our battlefield, then I think I can help a bit.
: Very well. Then you’ll ride aboard Vega’s Valhalla as her sub-pilot. She is my little sister, meaning she’s also your elder sister.
: Alright…!
: Subaru…
: Wait, does that mean Subaru is Hokuto’s uncle?
: I suppose so.
: Heheh… what a cute little uncle.
: Huh…?
: Psych yourself up, Subaru. This battle’ll be a major one for Earth.
: Good luck out there, Subaru.
: Yeah…!
: And, Altair, I ask that you remember something too.
: What, exactly?
: That you are also one of our comrades and that you’ll make a lot of people sad if you try anything crazy.
: …
: If someone is capable of feeling regret, then there are no sins so great that atonement is impossible…
: Indeed, I am certain that living is how you’ll be capable of atoning.
: I thank you, Warrior of Cronus, Prince of the Planet Fleed… I shall take your words to heart.
: Then let’s get going, Altair.
: The time has come to fell the enemies that stole your past and sow chaos across the universe…!
: Hm…!!

Mission 51 – Hope, the Ultimate GEAR

Harry’s just received the code words “Tora! Tora! Tora!” from the Fifth Fleet, confirming the successful destruction of the satellite (same words the Japanese used to confirm their successful surprise attack on Pearl Harbor…!).
Yukina’s already detecting the energy shield around the Gulfer planet disappearing; we’ve got them with their pants down now, Minato quips, though Jun warns that they could potentially launch a new shield generator. We best get going to the entry spot right now, then, and Ruri sends all troops out.

The Fifth Fleet’s backing off with a bunch of RoBeasts in pursuit – we’d best get through this while they’re being kept busy, Quattro says. First step is getting down on the planet and Amuro asks everyone to reconfirm the course for entry – landing in the wrong spot would likely be fatal.
Sai and Drill think he’s exaggerating – there’s got to be some hiding spots even in an enemy world, right? Vega disagrees: the Gulfer Emperor is a computer that oversees the entire planet. It’d be incredibly difficult to avoid his gaze, so we must make landfall squarely at the Gulfer palace or this’ll end in failure. The assault on the Spiral Castle ain’t got nothing on this, Sai groans.

Moreover, Hokuto and Ginga know we can’t waste too much time here – there’s still the MU back on Earth. Akira agrees, wanting to put the pedal to the metal and get back ASAP. Bright passes command to Altair, who warns everyone to stay alert. The enemy is certain to already know we’re here.
And they do! Harry’s pinging enemy troops headed this way from the Gulfer homeworld.

In come dozens of Knights, though Subaru warns that this is merely a prelude of what’s to come – we’re up against the planet itself. Light figures we’re better off calling the thing a huge spaceship with built-in factories and Tap’s wondering if we actually can take on something like that.
Kouji says we ain’t got a choice there – what else did we come here for? Indeed, Rom warns that despair eats away at hope and it is a weak heart that begets despair. Tap knows that but this still ain’t easy to face.
Ryouko asks what’s up with that pansy-rear end attitude – she could so kick his rear end right now. If he were an enemy, he’d already be dead! As Hikaru calms her down, Rom continues: “the true enemy is inside one’s heart. However, that enemy is also the one you’re personally most familiar with.” And Maillot joins in with some Sun Tzu: “‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles’… you’d do well to remember those words.”

Light has a quiet laugh, knowing how hard it’d be to argue against these two, and Tap relents – he’ll just get to work and whatever happens, happens. Now, Altair tells Ruri not to expect enemy reinforcements to stop coming (they do) and to focus only on breaking through the area.
Harry’s already working on setting our entry point. Minato’s rather impressed with his skill but, well, he’s not Ruri’s second-in-command for nothing.

The point’s waaay at the back and Harry says we’ve eight minutes to get there. Any longer and we’ll carrying out this attack will be nigh impossible – we’ll have wasted too many resources, Judau sees. Not to mention, Ryouma adds, the enemy might get their energy shield back online.
Altair tells everyone to escort the Nadesico and Argama over to that point, whereupon they’ll have a clear path to descend onto the homeworld – a pair of knives at the Gulfer’s throat. Granted, Tetsuya and George note that that this battle will only truly end after we’ve dealt with the Emperor proper.
And we must succeed, Vega and Kazuya add, in the name of all those who’ve entrusted their hopes and their future to our care and all who are waiting for our return.
Forward!

Mission Objective: Nahel Argama and Nadesico C reach the specified point within eight turns
Mission Failure: Time limit expired or any ship, Dendoh, Ogre or Valhalla destroyed.

It’s a long way to the point and there are a ton of big Knights in our way – no tiny Gulfer whatsoever! Oh, and the Knights got a major HP boost. You’ll need to keep your ships always mobile, though you have decent leeway if you spam Accelerate with both.
If you can’t be arsed to kill everything, just carve a path and ignore the rest.

As always, the Chars lead.

Hopefully he’ll get mobbed. This one’s for Tetsuya.

Maillot’s missiles are even more effective. Masato gets this one.

Next up, Kaine and Amuro prepped this one.

Boom.

Everyone else starts moving onward, taking potshots at whatever’s close.

Enemy Phase!

No, please, go after Masato.

Ah, well.

Now that’s more like it. Two trade blows with Masato, another two with Quattro.

The more distant Knights are hanging back, though a group of Bugs starts closing in.

Player Phase!

Go long, Masato.

We’ll watch your back.

Juuust short of a kill. Bright attacks again, finishing the job.

drat, Maillot, calm down!
That’s an easy kill for Vega.

Recently taught Aqua Hit & Away, so I can switch to her much more often.

Kouji takes it.

Gundams soften this Virus for Duke.

Get the enemies under fifteen and six Knight Locks will spawn. Ginga’s annoyed but Subaru says that’s hardly all we can expect of the homeworld’s defense forces – there are surely more on the way.
Which means we just gotta clean the road of whatever gets in the way.

Like in the previous mission, you’ll get a total of three waves of reinforcements before they stop coming. Eighteen Locks have a whole lot more HP than the Death Army troops, though.

All these mooks means Hayato gets to run amuck.

Just to be safe, I had Benkei pop two Spirit casts. Hokuto and Ginga dispatch the thing.

Enemy Phase!

Masato and Quattro continue tearing through the mooks. The Knights are all trying to gang up on them.

Player Phase!

*Alarm!*

: Wh-What is it?!
: An enemy unit’s running us down, like, crazy fast!!
: I-It’s—!

: You’ve made it quite far, humans – most impressive.
: Zero?!
: But I’m afraid my being here means your advance will come to a full stop.
: drat the Gulfer…! They sent him straight for us!
: Hmhmhm… While Meteor was no threat whatsoever, I’d rather not let a vessel such as this trespass into our holy land.
: Watch out! He’s targeting the Nadesico!
: Ruriruri!
: Full power to the Distortion Field!
: You are far too late!

: Urk!
: Th-The Field isn’t—!
: Omoikane, keep the Field’s output steady!
: That won’t help you!

: Hrm…! This isn’t good.
: Hey! You’re way too chill for the mess we’re in!
: Order the nearby units to cover us!
: You will not, for death comes to you right this moment!

: D-Damage on the phase transition engine! Output going down! W-We can’t…! Captain!!
: Do not give up. If we do, we’ll never be able to track him down.
: Ruriruri…!
: Omoikane, run some estimates on the enemy’s movement patterns. Harry, you help him as well.
: Y-Yes, ma’am!
: This… this ship inherited the name and the memories of his— of their ship…
: I cannot let it be sunk…!
: Even if your vessel is capable of anticipating my movements, you are unable to react in time!
: Furthermore, things such as human emotions are, ultimately, fleeting! You’ll disappear along with the memories you bear, Nadesico!
: !!

: What?!
: You are also unable to react in time… to my movements, that is.
: Kch! A Boson Jump?!
: I won’t let you destroy the ship that took up the Nadesico name… or kill Yurika’s dear friends…!

: Y-You human vermin! How dare you—!
: …
: Black Sarana…!
: Akito…? Akito, is that you?!
: …
: Akito…!
: …Time is short, Ruri. Your orders?
: Oh, yes. We’re currently breaking through the enemy lines to descend on the Gulfer homeworld – please assist with the offensive.
: Roger that.
: Um… Akito.
: …What?
: As it turns out, I really won’t be needing that recipe.
: …
: So, I’d like to give it back to you.
: … We’ll see, if we both survive this.
: I understand.
: Heey! You two really gonna leave it at that?!
: It’s fine.
: Come ON! Don’t you got a ton of stuff to tell him—
: Don’t push it.
: Y-Yo, idiot, I’m just—
: I know, I know. But you’re not too good at this either.
: Which is why I was trying to push them!
: (The prince in dark armor, coming to save the young maiden… Despite all that’s happened, you’re still the Akito we knew.)
: However strong your emotions might run, they will not present you with the strength to prevail against us… You will be forced to accept that fact as I claim your lives one by one.
: No. So long as hope stays within us, we won’t fall to the likes of you! Hope is our ultimate weapon!
: Hahahah… you humans are absolute fools.
: But hasn’t your group suffered a string of defeats at the hands of those humans?
: Fine. You’ll come to regret those words.
: I’ve already had my fill of regret. All I’m doing now is pushing onwards…!

Aaay, Akito’s joined our crew! With… only another four missions left in the game. Again.
At least he’s pretty dang powerful, even by his lonesome.

We’ll have the Dendoh crew deal with Zero next, but first!

That’s two kills and a big chunk of HP off everything else.

Alright, over to you.

: Your pitiful struggle has run its course, Dendoh.
: Shut your trap! You ain’t gonna make me call it quits that easy!
: ‘Cause if I did, that’d be IT for everything!

: Zero!
: Oh, Master Subaru… it is truly deplorable to see the Emperor’s son cooperating with mere humans.
: I’m not a Gulfer anymore! I… I’m a human!
: I cannot allow you to sully the Emperor’s sight with such a display. You’ll perish here and now, Subaru!
: Subaru’s recovered his human heart and now he’s a dear friend of ours – you won’t lay a finger on him!

: Pilot of the Ogre… I’ll have you pay for leading Master Subaru astray.
: It’s you who’ll pay! I’ll never forgive you for how you used him!

: Did we get him?!
: Hell, yeah! That’s what happens when we get serious!
: No, wait! Look there!

: Hmhmhm… it’s useless. You cannot defeat me.
: No way…! He revived?!
: Does he also have the ability to self-regenerate?!
: That was way too quick to be regeneration.
: R-Right. Not even the DG Cells or Lazmunanium could work that fast…!
: I-It’s like the Ragou or the Data Weapons…
: Ah…?! Maybe it’s!
: What, Eris?
: Urgh, I’m an idiot… I should have suspected something after all those engagements! Zero might be…
: Harry, have Omoikane analyze this data, please!
: U-Understood!

*Ding!*

: I-I knew it! Zero’s also just a bunch of data given form!
: Meaning he has a backup saved elsewhere…
: And if that isn’t destroyed, he’ll just keep coming back again and again…?
: Y-Yes!
: So it’s useless for us to try and fight him now?!
: No wonder his name’s Zero – this isn’t funny one bit.
: And, to make it worse, the money payout’s also zero. This sucks.
: What’re you on about?
: Ah, nothing, nothing. Just an in-joke.
: Forget about Zero, troops! Support the Nadesico C and Nahel Argama and carve open a path to the target area!

Yeah, here’s Zero’s unique skill in play. He’ll always come back whenever killed and, as Hikaru said, you don’t even get money out of it. So just carry on with the plan.

Up top, we’re just going to town and clearing out Masato’s weakened survivors. In that, we trigger the last wave of reinforcements.

Maillot and Quattro are already set up as potential targets.

D-d-destroyed.

Rinse and repeat, really.

Enemy Phase!

And, once again, I forgot that SFX damage IS real damage in MX. Zero’s blasts left the Nadesico with about 30% HP left – thankfully, I’d seen fit to cast Iron Wall as I made my charge for the end zone. A ton of Knights mob the ship.

Player Phase!

And I’ve officially run out of patience! Pop goes everything, giving us a nice 100k bucks.

Two lone survivors crumble under valored double attacks.

And all clear, so let’s move the ships.

The Argama reaches the point and Bright begins his descent, with orders for the troops to follow. Ruri does the same on arrival.

: Alright, now…!
: It’s our turn to get going, too, Hokuto!
: Dendoh, Ogre… I’ll at least stop your descent!

*Zero charges after the Ogre.*

: Oh, no!
: Hokuto!!

: UWAAAH!!
: Vega! Subaru!
: Urk…! The controls aren’t gone!

*Vega falls towards the Gulfer homeworld.*

: M-MOM!!

*Hokuto goes after.*

: Hokuto! You can’t go there by yourself! HOKUTO!!

*Everyone heads in.*

: They’ve fled… but no matter. These humans can never prevail against me… Their nonsense shall meet its end at the homeworld’s surface.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't cutscene damage always real damage in SRW, at least for playable characters? I mean, sometimes you see the character use a healing spirit during the cutscene, or they end up removed from the field by the damage, or it's at the end of the chapter so it doesn't matter, but aside from those situations, I don't recall cutscene damage not counting. However, the most recent SRWs I've played are the Alpha series, which MX was released right in the middle of, so it could be that I've forgotten it happening in more recent games like the Z series or the DS games.

Sure but cutscene damage usually incurs an attack video being shown. I can't remember the last time regular on-map SFX explosions actually did legit damage to a unit (unless its a gimmick stage but those are always pointed out).

Oh, I missed that it was just an on-map explosion. Yeah, I think they realized it was pretty poor form not to show an HP bar decreasing.

There is no problem that cannot be solved through sufficient application of lasers and friendship.
No Akito, go away until you can admit to yourself that you're here to save your adopted daughter too. Or at least show up with enough time left so you can have some character development.

I completely forgot about Aqua having a unique uniform of her own. Which now retroactively makes it a MX exclusive sprite since OG has her use the normal Earth Federation uniform when she's not wearing her DFC suit.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.

I assume this is the real reason he doesn't join until the end. Because hanging around our crew makes it impossible to not have character development, while being from Prince of Darkness he can't help but be an rear end in a top hat flatter then cardboard.

Yeah there were a couple of those in MD, but they always show the HP going down.

Aw, keep after him. Eventually you're going to force him to rebuild in the middle of a breaking change and then he'll be gone for a good while.

That dream with Aqua and Mitte is another odd turn in the story of this OG group. Mitte was about the same back then as now. Which raises the question of why Aqua got so attached to her. It seems a bit silly, really. As things progress, and we learn more about what's going on with them, their narrative seems to become less compelling instead of more.

Yes. But you see, Mitte's sociopathy didn't lead to her trying to directly break Aqua's will before, so it was fine. [/sarcasm]
Really though, Mitte's side of the conversation would have been the same if she was just the aloof but helpful mentor Aqua thought she was. It looks damning now because she's had an entire game to spend ramping up her villainy.

The series solution to holding him off while breaking through: Hokuto rams a Unicorn Drill Final Attack straight through him, and Ginga uses Clock Manager to freeze Zero in time while he's exploding. Watch Gear Fighter Dendoh.
