I knew Mr Shakedown was released into the world after his tutorial but I was not prepared when I came running around a blind corner in Nakamichi Alley and nearly collided with him. Gotta watch those wandering bosses.

Make sure to do the Survey everyone. It's a button panel right next to the one for Manual under the Start Menu icon. It's short and literally has options to let them know "I bought this game because I love Yakuza and I have bought all of them and will continue to buy all of them". You can write in stuff too like "Gio Corsi marry me". :v:

I love how consistent Kiryu's characterization always is.

Rule 1: Never compromise on anything ever.
Rule 2: If something interferes with Rule 1, beat it until it stops.

So I was like, hmm, a Shogi parlor, I don't remember that, this seems like an interesting game

For a sidequest thats all about helping Michael Jackson make not-Thriller they sure made it a real unfun piece of poo poo to play, escort missions are garbage.

Game still rules though. I beat Mr. Shakedown and now theres a 2nd one stalking the streets

In 6 this actually sets him at odds with his friends like never before. It was a pretty black and white world up until that but things got very grey for a bit there.

Edit: it may have not even been intentional, maybe I was supposed to unconditionally root for Kiryu like usual, but I wasn't.

Kiryu really is the best just because of how genuinely hard the writers work to make that stupid, stupid, character feel real. Like, you have normal rear end people, total dirtbags and lawmen alike, saying 'what are you DOING you have to just loving chill' and here's this cartoon man going 'no, a true yakuza never chills' while his loving bosses say "NO WE CHILL A LOT ACTUALLY" desperately behind him, yet somehow it works really well.

Kiryu is great because he has no loving off button for ANYTHING. He takes literally every single thing with the exact same unrelenting sense of seriousness and it becomes fantastic.

Welp I figured it out. I was using an accessory called "Charismatic Autobiography" that gives good good stats but apparently makes enemies like 10x as aggressive. It's definitely not clear that's what it does in the item description. I took it off and I can clear fights without getting hit now

So yeah, gently caress you guys. I knew something was off.

Yeah, just checked and I had that equipped. That explains quite a bit.

You get it from the Damned Yanki sub story.

Well, I admit I got a few game overs on mooks, and I needed a meal or a healing item after every fight, but I managed to clear chapter 2 with the stupid thing on so I managed. Rush was great for dodging, and like I said Beast style at the right place at the right time can destroy groups in seconds.

Regardless, it is a nasty trap.

Digging the game so far, lot of charm, lotta style. I'm still in chapter 1, but I have already brutalized fools with a bicycle and witnessed several scenes of Kiryu's stoic burning manliness. Thumbs up!

hey is there a good spoiler-free guide for missable things by chapter or whatever? I remember there being a couple encounters you didn't want to miss back on whichever of these I last played, Yakuza 2? speaking of which it was weird as some of the buildings started to look familiar since I don't remember anything from the earlier games

so far I did like two missions and then wandered around and got in like 35 fights. also pulled a max star thing out of one of them million yen gachas but I dunno what its for. pinewood derby??

In the modern era of Yakuza I thought there wasn't anything like that. You can screw up on some sub missions but you should just accept those failures and learn from them same as street thugs accept and learn from being hit with a baseball bat.

I've changed a lot since I started hanging with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. I know I can do this by myself! Okay, Eggman! Bring it on!
Who the hell decided the most natural way to translate Japanese name order in the middle of dialogue is "Last Name, First Name?"

The rest of the translation is really good, but when it comes to the name order and leaving in honorifics it seems like they just took the lazy way out. I find it super jarring.

Since Kiryu and Majima never really meet in this game, do we know if there are still any rad team up heat actions and stuff?

I just remembered that part in 5 where Shinada and the Ace Pitcher he hit the homerun off of team up to beat up like a hundred dudes, and how hard it ruled.

got this the other day and I'm enjoying it a lot even though I don't normally like the type of game where you are basically just watching a movie for long stretches. but in this case its really good. the voice actors of the older lieutenants like Kuze are especially great

I feel like I'd get a lot more out of it if I knew Japanese though! Kind of weird playing an open world game where I have no clue what most of the signs/businesses etc are

Yea I normally don't do these things but not only does Yakuza need its fans to say 'no no we WANT this, this is a GOOD thing you're doing' still, but boy is this localization just a gold standard in itself and totally deserves praise.

I made friend with a weird RC racer nerd and then became one myself when I realized car customization was a thing, then I met a dominatrix and helped her be better at her job before impersonating a producer to help a man who's name means butterfly film a food tour show. This is all while having to clear my and my family figure's name for a murder that could ruin our lives forever. You know, Yakuza poo poo.

When do things shift to Majima though? I wanna know when I should try to do all the side stuff I can if the game's gonna shift focus.
