Dr. Fetus posted:So what are the skills to avoid in general? All of Yangus's except Axes. Most characters skill options are pretty balanced. You might not want to use the level 100 skills, which are mainly impractical (except Red's, for some reason, all of her 100 skills are ridiculously godly, except maybe Whip Whack; Butterfly Bop is the strongest all-targetting attack in the game, and Blade Cascade is the strongest attack in the game period), aside from Hand of God, Hustle Dance, and Kazing. But other than that (and Yangus), pretty much everything's pretty good. The only really questionable non-Yangus skill is Charisma, which is merely okay (though to be fair it's kind of Nerfed by Morrie Existing: It's main purpose before was to reduce enemy tension, which Morrie can now do and also attack.) Red probably has the best skillset in the game, honestly. It's hard to go wrong with her.

Golden Oldies justifies Yangus's Humanity skillset. I just got Morrie into my party - does anyone know yet what his most useful skillsets are? I heard Passion helps with raising Tension.

Clubs/Passion imo, though Claw is also quite good for the boss rush dungeon and Boomerang has good grinding utility. always go Passion on Morrie, Intensso is loving bonkers and can potentially get you to 100 tension on a character in one turn. He also gets Oomph and Kazing, making him an insanely good off-support character.

What are the pros and cons of Clubs vs. Claws? ...Also, is there a better way to grind at ~40 than metal king slimes in the Dragon Graveyard? 'cause they aren't giving me full levels anymore, and I'm starting to wonder if spawning them and trying to kill them before they run is still worth the effort.

ZZT the Fifth posted:What are the pros and cons of Clubs vs. Claws? Morrie's Club tree is primarily about stunning. It's only non-stun skill is an auto-crit. It's final skill is a all-hitting skill with a decent stun chance (though compared to his Boomerang Tree there isn't much point in that skill). Claws are... varied. It has a pseudo-falcon slash skill, an anti-machine/material skill, a triple hit skill (Basically the same as the multi-skills, since it deals the average damage of them), a hit and debuff skill (though it sadly also removes sap), and the final skill is a defense ignoring skill. The latter two are particularly amazing in post game, where there's bosses with obscene defense or that spam tension. Conveniently, you actually get Morrie at the earliest right before a maingame boss that tensions a lot, and then a boss with obscene defense, so I kind of wonder if all of it isn't on purpose.

Clubs: has a Helm Splitter-alike auto crits for Metal Slimes and Darksteel Dragon pretty easy to gear in early endgame, esp. since you can get 2 Conquerer's Axes for the club recipe now Stun effect can be mildly useful as random encounter CC Claws: Multi-strike attack that synergizes with his tension bonuses very well 'Free' decent claw from a guaranteed drop from a story boss Buff removal move that is very good against bosses that spam Oomph/Tension etc Strongest claw weapon is locked behind several difficult bosses in the new dungeon both are good, I'd say in a nutshell clubs brings more useful utility and claws has better damage, especially for bosses

Thinking of getting into this (VIII) next, anything I should know if i never played a dragon quest game before? Does this have missable content or can I go in mostly blind? For builds I'll probably just go with the earlier advice to max one weapon skill & their character skill for each (swords, axes, staffs, bows respectively).

ThisIsACoolGuy posted:I just got the ability to make a monster team get the axe lizard near Farebury and the Golem near peregrine Quay, they should get you through a few of the early ranks which will unlock better monsters to recruit which you can grab pretty easily once you have a boat. Ideally you wanna get to the tier of the arena that lets you summon your monster team in the outside world since it's invaluable for tough encounters. B rank is the toughest to get through and basically you should stop there until you hit Arcadia whre you can revruit a monster that will carry you through B and then the best monsters will unlock to take you through A and S.

That post explaining tension helped me a lot. Got killed by a boss, gained an extra level and went in to try using psych up knowing his pattern and it was significantly easier. Does all negative status effects cancel your tension or just some? Figured out healing a guy with cancel his tension too.

Dumb question: if psyche up only gives you 1.7x on the next turn, isn't it more efficient to just attack both turns? Is the idea to get to at least 20 before attacking?
|
# ? Jan 26, 2017 15:31 |
|
Basically yes, at 20 tension you essentially get 1 free round worth of damage and at 50 tension you get 2 rounds. Things to keep in mind though are that any tension attack ignores resistances and also later in the game you will be able to build tension on a character without them actually spending a turn to do so which increases the overall damage to turn count ratio.

# ? Jan 26, 2017 15:45 |

Depends on how quickly you want to get overpowered. IIRC the recipes are placed such that they are still useful when you find them, but you could have made them a few hours earlier if you'd known right away. Idk if they changed their placement for the 3ds to accommodate the new recipes.

Nihilarian posted:so gold golems only give about 300 gold in the 3ds version. Is there a better way to get money? Define "better". You can do the bingo game in the casino passively and then sell magic waters, turning every casino coin into 1.5 gold. Or you can kill 30 terror tabbies and then repeatedly spawn and kill the golden tabby outside of the chapel in trodain for 700 gold and a decent chance at gold ring drops. Also, gold golems only give 300 vs. 700 gold but it's still the same grind as it was in the PS2 version since you can guarantee encounters rather than RNG.

Just unlocked the arena after finding the castle (and getting Slimey outside of it). What are some good monsters to grab. I got the demon guy hanging around Red's Hideout, but what are some other good ones available before I can get the ship? At least one more to replace the useless squid, as the knight seems to be decent enough for now.
