You know, actually seeing the video just cemented how weird it is that the Andromeda expedition is advertising SAM as a feature.

Fine print would be one thing, but this is a galaxy where AI research is pretty much the most restricted field of science that doesn't involve STG killteams. The going story for the biggest terrorist attack in history is"The geth did it". Everybody knows that if you gently caress up where AI are involved, you wind up smelling your own farts without a planet to call your own as everybody else laughs at you.

And here, they're going "Check out our AI given power over everything! Pretty cool, huh? We probably hosed up the safeguards somewhere, so it can have its way with your body while you sleep for six hundred years. Remember: We let it control people's brains."

No wonder the quarians didn't get involved. Even their stupidity has a cap somewhere.

Ah Yes Alec Ryder or whatever your name is, hero of the Alliance, YOU will head this first ever attempt to colonize a distant galaxy! Your team will be a crack squadron, able to handle anything! And I guess you can take your kids along too?

The military allows wife/husbands and children to move onto a base with their soldiers, you know? And it's not like they're going to war. Besides, they're all in suspended animation, the morale would be loving dreadful if you were being shipped out for the effective lifetime of your children...and their children...and their children's children.
Come the gently caress on, man, chill out over that.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

Yeah, these are literal slowboat(ish) intergalactic colony ships. Of course the commander gets to take his kids. Especially since his kids are adults with useful skills, even if they aren't Heroes of the Alliance in their own rights.

No one man should have all that Psycho-Power.

Your party members look pretty lame so far, Krogan might be cool? The humans(default ryders included) look like lame JCpenny fashion models rather than actual soldiers/explorers.

Just put Zaeed in the game, I don't care if it doesn't make a lick of sense.

Exactly.

Besides, if you're going to start a colony, WOULDN'T you take your kids? I'll bet there are likely babies on board somewhere.

Listen, I base all of my colony experience from Anne McCafferey's Decision At Doona series, and THEY had kids. And the kids did good things. Let Bioware have this one, no one's losing the war because a colony ship has PapaRyder's ADULT CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED IN THINGS LIKE SOLDIERING AND POTTERY (respectively) on a goddamn colony ship.

If it's a colony ship the point is to colonize and reproduce. Take kids or make them when you're there. I'm sure there are like children and teenagers along for the ride too, it's a boon to have adult children with developed skill-sets.

aNYWAY,
tHAT'S REALLY ALL THERE IS,
tO REPORT ON THE SUBJECT,
oF ME GETTING HURT,

Mass Effect always seemed to imply the galactic taboo on AI research was something humanity didn't much care about and was really only officially obeying while continuing all sorts of AI experiments off the books. It's not surprising they'd roll it out for their big extra-galactic mission ("Everything's legal in international waters!"), although it might turn out that the other Pathfinders (there's one for each Council Race's ark, right?) don't have their own.

I still think the kids thing makes sense considering the mission is about starting human civilization somewhere new, not just an Enterprise-style five year mission. If they're sending 20,000 humans then they might do the "best and brightest" thing, but it'd also make sense to send families since community and familial bonds are probably going to be important as hell in founding whatever new Human society they're going to have in Andromeda.

It's actually a pretty cool problem and it's sort of too bad that it'll be completely overshadowed by a fight for survival with an evil Archon, there's lots of questions about how you go about refounding humanity in a new galaxy with a small seed population, and especially if four races are doing it in tandem as part of some kind of team effort. It seems like the original plan is already derailed by the time you get there with some ships missing or having arrived early and descended into some kind of chaos, and that might add some interesting stakes to the situation if you could for example make a decision which sacrifices the Turian ark and now there'll be no Turian civilization in Andromeda.

Why is this even a debate? The Tempest is a big ship, and the twyders have skills. They don't have to be involved in away missions, diplomacy, anything. Alec Ryder is a hero of the Alliance, and picked his crew. It's not a military mission, so nepotism isn't really an issue.

gently caress people are pedantic.

That pretended to be a VI until the galaxy's most infamous terrorist stole her ship back and went "It's the apocalypse, gently caress you, we're play by my rules now."

It was made clear that EDI was only ignored because the entire galaxy was falling apart to the point where Rachni and Geth could show up on a council project and people would just accept it. The rules are normally rather different for the last hope of the galaxy in a crisis situation and a civilian pleasure cruise.

Young people can be competent! But I agree, at 22 she'd be at best mid-way through a PhD, rather than already being a real researcher. Unless in the future they don't worry about universities and instead just neurally implant all the relevant knowledge directly into your brain or something.
