Man, the Alien blu-ray is really pretty.

Also, I just noticed something for the first time - in the shot right before Ash tries to jam the porno mag down Ripley's throat, there's this little arc shot that circles around Ash, and I guess the cameraman hits the wind chimes that are hanging in the bunk. Ash even very deliberately whips his head around to look at them, and then you see the chimes shaking in the corner of the shot.

Was it just a mistake that they didn't feel like reshooting over? I know they were pretty tight on time / money so that would definitely make sense, but I watched it again and something about the way Ash reacts and the fact that the shot is framed to make the dangling chimes a focal point makes it seem almost purposeful, but I have no idea why it would be. It seems like it would have been pretty easy to edit around, but maybe they just figured nobody would notice? I guess that's fair since this is probably my sixth or seventh time watching it and I never caught it before.

Probably way overthinking it, but I actually kinda like it - there's almost a disorienting effect from it.

Pretty sure that's why they left it in.
Or that it took you seven times to catch, it's easy to miss, and adds to Ash's weirdness when you do notice.

Described as “semi-connected short films chronicling the lives of the mutated women, men, and children of Los Angeles,” the film includes such sights as a boy growing a disembodied head by smearing it with feces, a man having sex with a woman’s talking boil (which continues talking even after its mouth has filled with semen) and George Clinton birthing a giant cockroach from his anus.

I can't remember what state it was, but the Republicans in one state literally asked for research in what prevents black people from voting, and then implemented all of those things. They aren't even being subtle about it.

Probably Florida. Back in 2000 they straight up had state police putting up road blocks near the black neighborhoods on election day. This is a thing that's been well known for almost 20 years and no one gives a gently caress that it happened.

For colorful lighting: Anything Argento, of course. Masque of the Red Death does some rad stuff with color, and Beyond the Black Rainbow, too. The Twilight Zone movie has a few really colorful bits - I haven't seen it in forever but there's the scene with the giant mutant rabbit that is definitely taking some lighting cues from Argento, and I think there's another bit with some claymation monsters and really weird lighting. Maybe Don't Look Now, Kwaidan, and Neon Demon would be good fits?

Bride of Frankenstein has some really badass lighting too, if you want to look at black and white stuff. Same with basically all of Murnau's work. edit: Also, Vampyr, Mad Love, and Carnival of Souls for B&W films.

There's a good YouTube video that of course I can't find and it talks about this scene. How the cameraman moves around Ash and backs away, hitting the wind chimes. Ash looks over at the noise and basically gets the idea to shove the magazine down Ripley's throat. It's a very weird, meta bit that is extremely cool once you notice it.

The big Carpenter ones, especially Halloween and The Thing, are perfectly lit horror movies, they strike a great balance between light and dark, showing too much and too little. For colorful, you probably couldn't do better than motherfucking Suspiria.
