SURJ is great. They usually get plugged into what other groups and campaigns are going on in a city and coordinate support rather than just redundantly building up their own poo poo. Mine at least sends out action items so I just write and call about things, which is great because I hate having to talk to people or go to meetings.

Ugh, I've been feeling so useless as a poor rural leftist lately. I don't have the money for train tickets/gas to get to the city for protests or anything but scattered small donations throughout the year, I live in a heavily red area that didn't even have a Dem candidate for the House this year, there's no real local political organizations of any note besides county Rep/Dem branches, etc. It feels like all I can really do is call out shitheads when I see them and sign useless petitions. I have been offering what help I can in organizing a state level chapter of SPUSA for at large members, but I'm the only member in my area. What have other rural goons been doing?

I live in Kansas, where anyone that thinks we should treat non-white humans decently and anyone that believes in science / facts is a dirty liberal that should be stoned. I am just starting to get involved with things since this Trump ordeal truly frightens me. I am going to start calling my state representatives regularly thanks to a goon who posted the link below. I also started making small recurring donations to the ACLU, and I am searching for another 1-2 organizations. Based on what I have learned recently, it sounds like CALLING your state reps and showing up to town hall type meetings voicing your concerns is actually very effective.

Started the day with the DNC Chair forum thing with all the chair and vice-chair candidates, ended with protest at IAH. It's so crazy, when the forum ended there were maybe just 5-10 people in our group throwing around the idea of possibly going to the airport to do something, but by the time I arrived there were maybe over 100 people. Three DNC Chair candidates were there (including Perez whom I'm pretty sure our organizers hate so lol) and one vice-chair candidate who was my favorite with the forum answers during her session. There was also a family that had been detained that we got to see leave the airport which was really moving although we crowded them a bit too much. I've only been to 3 protests so far but this was the best one, lots of people came up to share their stories and to inspire and support each other, I cried like twice. Also heard a bunch of people signed up so now our DSA meetings are going to be moved somewhere bigger. I think this whole thing has taught me not to underestimate organizational power in the age of the internet. Did anyone go to the protest at JFK? That thing looked huge.

I went to the D66 congress yesterday, hinted about coalitioning towards the left if/when they get in the parliament, which other attendees that me and my friend spoke to seemed to universally react positively to but attendance went from 300 people last time to 1500 this year so the chances of this sentiment reaching the upper management is not that great but the idea is there and the next (local) event is in two weeks where there'll be talk about creating a local level party to join next year's municipal elections with in my home town that I'll be doing the same at.

That site just keeps giving me Dick Durbin to call, and while he's not perfect, I don't think we have to worry about him supporting most of Trump's worst bullshit. I'm not sure how effective calling my rep would be since he runs unopposed. There's not really much you can threaten to do that would make him worry about re-election chances that isn't also blatantly illegal and stupid like threats of violence.

Flooding an unopposed rep with calls makes a gigantic difference. The last thing a "safe district" rep wants to deal with is actually having to campaign, and if they think the winds are blowing toward a primary or a PAC-funded challenge, they'll freak the gently caress out immediately. Remember, the right eats their own, and if the party thinks a rep can't handle a district, they will be replaced.

Even if they aren't thinking about an election challenge, when you call their office you're speaking to the same staff they speak to and spend time with every day. If that staff is spending all day every day answering phone calls about the muslim ban or healthcare, you bet they're going to hear about it.

Organize and create constant, daily pressure. Never think your calls don't matter.

Call your reps and senators as often as you can about issues that matter, and ask for a personal response to specific questions you ask. Look up something they've done that you like and say that even though you like [legislative action] and would like to support him/her in the next election, you're troubled that they haven't joined moderate conservatives in opposing Trump's Muslim ban because it's the wrong way to keep the nation safe. Ask a question that makes them seem like they're not taking care of their district and say that while you hate to do it, you'll join the next campaign against them if they don't take a strong position against Trump's overreach and meddling in the power of the legislature.

Several republican senators have criticized Trump on the grounds above, and while it's a lovely xenophobic position it is a challenge to the unique threat that Trump poses in making himself an autocrat.

speaking of which, for those goons who happen to be attorneys, now is the time, if there ever was one, for pro bono. directly or indirectly, all of the people impacted by the eo on refugees, and the other actions taken or to be taken by the trump administration, and the people opposing them, like david cole over at aclu, can use your help. get in there and fight!

also i voted for la riva in the presidential election so i dont have very developed opinions on most democrats anyway.

tonight was wild. id say between 1-1.5k people showed up but it didnt feel as good as last night. cops had everything too jammed up so the action was missing some of the defiant character it should have had.
