Have people noticed that Xenonauts 2 has released an update and demo? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cenw3LxNr1c Spoiler alert: they've added a 3d engine so it's literally a clone of XCOM except with the TU system. I didn't get the original because OpenXCOM exists, but it is interesting to see how they're pushing to make a TU system work as well as it possibly can. Also I'd forgotten that LOS was a thing.

Xenonauts 1 is a great game that is very little like original XCom. While the base concepts are the same, you just have so many more tools right out of the gate like riot shields, breaching charges and flashbangs. It can feel very much like Rainbow Six/SWAT breaching UFOs instead of mooks going in to die horribly to reaction fire. That and interception is probably the best it has been in this kind of game with active air combat.

Yeeees. More XCOMS! More Xenonauts! More After<BLANK>s! E: Is anyone having crashes with Instant Avenger Menu's? At least I think thats the culprit. Tabbing out and coming back alittle later caused two crashes and after turning it off it seems to be fine again. Apparently there was a cut unit in Long War, a Stun Lancer type that used an Arc Thrower. Boy that would be beyond infuriating having to deal with that in missions, although I do lean towards Revival Protocol for just such a lucky Drone stun.

As long as you're subscribed to both mods, you can just smash classes together into whatever you want. Have the Dragoon borrow some abilities from the Gunner, toss the Ranger and the Infantry class into a blender until you get something you'd like or looks fun. The Grenadier and the Combat Engineer are more or less the same, but the name 'Combat Engineer' is way cooler, so add in bluescreen bombs and the environmental destruction abilities from the Long War tree. Shadow ops dude went a little hammy on the stat growth, so in order to keep it honest you gotta shave down the amount of hp he hands out.

Ornamented Death posted:It is consistent, though. The tip says something like "you only get corpses on missions where you don't evac or leave immediately after the battle." It's pretty consistent with that that you can't hang around a highly-secure Advent facility, even if you just killed everyone there. Advent is surely sending in an army to lock that place down. Awkward, though, when the Advent Tower and Resistance HQ are in the same territory. Been long enough since I played that I don't remember if it's like that all the time, but it was my first successful campaign.

Lunethex posted:There are reports of soldiers being unable to vault over railings and low cover and jump through windows, anyone getting this? Yeah, I got this. I literally ended up with two soldiers trapped in a building because they wouldn't jump off the roof (even in spots where there was no low cover) or go out a window. Basically, it made the map behave like there were giant invisible forcefields around the building, it even stopped AoE on explosives and stuff. No map mods other than LW2. I loaded back from a geoscape save and regen'd the mission and it worked fine though.

Our bullets tore through their armor early on because it was designed to resist THEIR weapons! Why are we copying them? Let's go back to bullets but bigger!" At which point he uses alien technology to basically pack the wallop of a .50 BMG into an easy to manage SMG thanks to the built-in inertial compensators. I think Xenonauts was also pretty interesting that it didn't give the human players psychic powers, that was a realm of fuckery only available to the AI/enemy but in return we did get the "humans are terrifying monsters" tier of weaponry.

Alright, I've set up LW2, sat down, and am ready to play? What should I know about the various new classes? A few infiltration-specc'd Shinobi (is there an easy way to rename this or the Ranger?) seem essential, but without unlocked perk trees for possible synergies (seriously why is this not a thing) I'm not sure what else I'm going to want. If its anything like LW1, each class has two "archetypes" and a 3rd generalist survival tree, but I don't want to get far in and realize that I really, really needed a support grenadier instead of a demolitionist or the hacker/medic choice. Also, good classes for officers?

Charlotte of Oz posted:I'm thinking the Technical's flamethrower still needs a little work Strangely all flame thrower mod all have that issue. There is a fun semi experimental mod called Flamer 2 mod that creates a flamethrower shotgun replacement that is pretty fun through. Makes the flame alot wider and also sets everything on fire Combine it with the LW2 raider class mod and you've got a class that has a flame thrower, grenade launcher, and the ability to go sheath at least once per mission.

Holo sniper, specialist, or rifleman are all good officer candidates since they all have single action ability they can use very often and stay with the squad to use their command skill. Look for candidate with really high aim, since they'll later learn a skill that help nearby troop with lower aim. I actually find Shinobi kind of meh when spec for infiltration. I think all they need is tradecraft then get sword or middle skill so they can actually do things once the shooting starts. Might be down to play style though. pedro0930 fucked around with this message at 04:37 on Jan 30, 2017 |

I need help! I'm new to XCOM and stuff. I'm getting my booty licked in combat. During the initial stages of missions, I can usually get my squad into advantageous positions and pull off sick 3-way overwatch eliminations. But as soon as the fog of war clears or more enemies spawn, I'm flanked to all hell and everyones in my blindspot. As far as I can tell, most cover tiles offer 2 adjacent low cover bonuses or 1 single high cover bonus, so I can't really hole up in some alleyway and pop dudes. And then those skinny pink psyops aliens turn a corpse behind my dude into a zombie and oops 3 people are dead because our heavy gunner turned against us.

In vanilla XCOM 2, you basically want to go balls-out and wipe aliens the turn you see them. Grenades and heavy weapons to destroy their cover are your friend, run and gun with a shotgun is your friend, and so on. If you can't kill them immediately, you'll want to debuff them - standing in high cover is okay, but not completely reliable for the long haul. You can suppress single enemies once you have the levels, but even from the start you can use flashbang grenades to ruin their aim and prevent them from using abilities, while you move up to flank them next turn. By moving fast and not getting bogged down in firefights, reinforcements aren't scary at all because you can just overwatch and get them all basically as soon as they drop in.
