Taboo is great. Watching the rest of the cast try to interact with Hardy's total stoneface really makes it for me.

Never read the books and I'm not great at film analysis but basically the characters have all aged appropriately for the time gap. It doesn't stand on its own at all, it's entirely referential to the first film. The plot centres on the betrayal of Mark stealing all the cash at the end of the original, but really its about the nostalgia a bunch of middle-aged Scots have for their smackhead youth. If that sounds silly or boring it isn't. It was a really good and thoughtful way to conduct a sequel in my opinion.

Good news everybody - yet another Sherlock Holmes adaptation is on the way!

Cast:

Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes
John C. Reilly as John Watson
Lauren Lapkus as Millie
Rob Brydon as Inspector Lestrade
Kelly Macdonald as Mrs. Hudson
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Grace Hart
Ralph Fiennes as Professor Moriarty
Hugh Laurie as Mycroft

It sounds stupid as hell but I bet it's still better than the last episode of Sherlock

Whhhhat. I mean could be funny but its really weird timing. It's kind of funny that Fry and Laurie have now played Mycroft but I doubt that was the intention of the casting.

It's going to be a woman this time. And/or a non-white person. Definitely. No doubt about this. This is exactly what is going to happen.

It's been almost 15 years since I read the second book, but from memory, there's some of it in there, but it's far more related to the first film than the second book. The porn element isn't in it at all, which I was dreading when I heard they were making the film.

Yeah, it's pure nostalgia and not in a bad way that sequels sometimes are. It knows what it's doing and plays along nicely. Like most films these days, it's a little longer than it needs to be, but not overly so. It starts like a rocket and then slows down a bit. Well worth a look.

Also, the passing of time has been as kind to Ewan McGregor as it has been harsh to Ewen Bremner, which works perfectly for their respective characters.

I didn't even bother with that. The first season was Babby's First AI Story with the production value of a thirty minute sitcom. If you haven't already, watch HBO's Westworld. It is better on every level of filmmaking.

Oh thank christ, that honestly is the most cringe enducing thing about the entire 2nd book and I am glad they just worked around it because how the gently caress would you adapt that without making it some sort of awful sex comedy film throwback with heroin nostalgia on top of everything else?
