A dpad lets you exert perpendicular force. You can roll from Up to Right and the hardware will register "right" promptly because pushing on the Right edge of the Up arrow starts to trigger the Right input.

Four separate buttons don't have that quality.

It's not insanely different or anything but anyone saying there's no difference at all or that whiny gamers will just let it go and be cool is a dumb butt.

A real D-pad is decisively better for games that use it for movement, but a lot of games don't, instead mapping it to inventory/UI shortcuts and whatnot (in which case buttons are fine, maybe even preferred). So basically it depends. Probably get a Pro if you'll be playing Virtual Console games.

God I hope the analog sticks aren't slippery like the 3DS. I had to purchase 3rd party grips to play MonHun.
It looks like they have ridges on the perimeter.
Should be okay.

Having buttons instead of a d-pad is something that's only going to matter to people who would probably prefer the pro controller anyway. If they'd given it a proper d-pad the left joycon would be a pretty crap controller when detached, which seems like something that would affect a much larger group of people.

I get why some of you are unhappy, but ultimately they made the right decision.

It isn't something I would take on a plane. With everything else I have to pack to keep my kid entertained and whatnot, anything bigger than a Vita or 3DS/2DS isn't something I'd take on a plane. Maybe on a road trip.

Not saying it isn't portable, but it won't replace the handheld line, especially for my (and I imagine plenty of others') travel needs. Add in the price of one vs that of a 2DS, most parents will be more apprehensive in letting their kids take it on a plane. Maybe if they produce a cheaper, smaller, lower res, underpowered version of the switch to play the same games.

OK.

I mean, parents letting little kids to something is different than saying it's too BIG to go on a plane. If my bag was so full that a 3DSXL would fit and the Switch wouldn't maybe I'd take out a granola bar or one sock to make room. You can take 2 bags each plus what you check. I guess you'll come back with not wanting to check bags and being on some super discount flight that only lets you carry on a fanny pack and you have to pedal.

Doubt it, because that would make the buttons terrible when using the joycon by itself

Yeah, the directional buttons are completely identical to the ABXY buttons-- they have to be for the single-sideways-joycon control scheme.

The dock really fucks a case or nerfing it.

Id much rather have separated buttons for my right thumb in single joycon mode, then a combined Dpad in dual joycon mode.

Yup, that's it.

You dream about pre-ordering a Switch, but somehow in the dream you didn't notice before you left the house that you weren't wearing any clothes.

But everyone at Gamestop notices.

This is the one I ordered. Inside looks like it's really soft so hopefully won't scratch up the screen. Looks like it holds less games than the other one but it's TOUGH. And it doesn't look like a purse. I'm a man, dammit.

Are all of these games even confirmed to be getting US releases? These graphics are all based off those US/EU release calendars Nintendo puts out but some of these games are pretty much destined to never leave Japan. Always thought that was kind of weird to shove stuff like DQ10 or Derby Stallion in a "TBA" slot.
