As far as I know they simply forwarded the reassuring smoke-and-mirrors Davis was making that everything is under control (while also beginning their first wave of attack pieces on the NFL for being "hypocrites" this morning, not surprising since Adelson bought paper to be his dirt-diggers and hitmen).

This guy, a TV affiliate sports anchor, actually went and called Goldman people.

I don't know who was making poo poo up but my first instinct would not be to just assume Goldman told the truth when not under oath.

The Raiders would have to pay the NFL a relocation fee of $550 million, pay the $500 million they committed as part of the three-way deal, buy the four parcels for the stadium, AND convince Goldman Sachs they could pay them back $650 million through cash and assets (stadium naming rights which Goldman could sell to whoever, etc).

Probably the banks began to figure they're taking on debt beyond their ability to repay it.

Goldman was probably planning on selling the debt to third parties and pocketing fees.

The franchise’s history of jumping back and forth from Northern to Southern California has been much documented, and some felt threats of relocating to Southern Nevada were simply a negotiating tool for Raiders ownership to get a better deal elsewhere.

Those skeptics are saying today that the Raiders lease proposal for the planned 65,000-seat domed stadium near the Strip — $1 in annual rent for instance — shows the franchise was taking advantage of Las Vegas.

“If [Adelson] doesn’t think it will pencil out for him, it won’t pencil out for Goldman Sachs or anybody else that thinks they want to step up to it,” Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani told the San Jose Mercury News. “I hate to say it, some of my concerns are starting to bear out. I don’t think Mr. Davis cared about either community, ours or Oakland. He’s using us against each other.”

LA Times also has a source:

quote:

A person with direct knowledge of the proposed $1.9-billion stadium told The Times that a deal for Goldman Sachs to finance the project is contingent on Adelson’s involvement. Without the billionaire, the person said, there isn’t a deal.

I kind of wonder if this source is Sisolak (county politician) trying to bring Adelson back to the table. His paper repeated a statement from his office that he was "unlikely" to come back. Sisolak, who had been cheerleading this project on the county commission, was also the first to declare that "the wheels had come off" while the Raiders were still projecting confidence that it was going to happen.

I just think it's simultaneously depressing and really loving hilarious Vegas got used for leverage yet again :homebrew:

I think the public statements to the effect of "it's going to happen" are a big part of the posturing and grasping for negotiation leverage, actually.

Do I get to crow about being right yet? Obviously it's premature to declare the whole deal as dead, but hopefully some folks are starting to see my view that this wasn't actually a done deal yet.

Goldman doing Goldman things:

quote:

A Goldman Sachs spokesman declined to comment on the record. Adelson has had no conversations with Goldman Sachs about its involvement in the project, said Ron Reese, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Sands.
Sources close to the Sands said they met with Goldman Sachs representatives this morning and were told the investment management company is out as a financier if Adelson is no longer involved.
Adelson and the bank are frequent partners in business ventures, Reese said.

I wonder why football spent two weeks or more promoting Goldman as a backup plan then.

Seems this was a case of everyone smelling somebody else's money. Davis smelled the government's money, Adelson smelled stadium management money, the government smelled tourist money, etc.

Then the NFL said "we're not comfortable working with a casino boss," so Adelson used his VIP status at Goldman to get them to handle it, still expecting that he could sell the place on the offseason on touring shows, National Finals Rodeo, UNLV games, etc. And then Davis decided he wanted that money, too, at which point there was not enough incentive for Adelson to spend $600MM.

Mark almost pulled it off until he got greedier and also tried to get the house to both front the losses and give him the profits. Cost-benefit scenarios are kind of what this town was built on.
