This makes some sense, I think.

I do not believe the Psychopomps ever cared that much about Jeanne. She was dangerous, unwilling to be escorted away, a troublesome ghost that would just have to be left alone for now. But Muut has always been invested in training Annie in the arts of escorting the dead to their rest, and she herself has an aptitude for it. This has been a goal for a long time for both of them, but Annie's taken on other interests and Muut hasn't.

Nah. Over the years Jeanne killed several psychpomps. If they had completely given up on her, it would have happened quite recently.

Muut's been pushing her towards this, and now that she's demonstrated she's got the skill to accomplish a task as difficult as this one, he's closing the trap.

I don't want to devalue what Annie did or anything, but Kat is the one who made this whole thing possible. If it weren't for her Annie would still be stuck in that maze and Parly/Smitty/Red/Blue would be dead.

Annie may be a powerful spirit but Kat is an actual Goddess. If anyone should be a psychopomp it's her, and the fact that Muut hasn't realized that makes me think he isn't very good at his jobs.

But aren't ROTD competing departments with psychopomps? So the pomp crew wouldn't be recruiting her to work for ROTD, that'd be dadpire's job, yeah?

The ROTD is an organization separate from that of the psychopomps, yes. However, in the Chapters where Annie et al are in the ROTD they check her "credentials" and see her listed as an Afterlife Guide and the Forest Medium, rather than as a psychopomp. Then she runs in to Ankou when Mort decides he would like to return to the Ether where, Ankou asks if she has decided to work for "Us." Muut has similar dialogue about Annie working for them back when Kat first met him.

In mythology, a psychopomp is an Afterlife Guide. Way way back in Chapter 9 when Annie is explaining to Mort how she knew Muut, Mort seems surprised that Annie could "see the guides like that", it miiiight be that Psychopomp is just a pompous (heh) name for Afterlife Guide in the GKC universe but based on how Annie uses the word psychopomp I think they're slightly different things.

One of Annie's first afterlife escapades was moderating a dispute between two psychopomps and saving stuck ghost. With Annie resolving the Jeane situation do you think the psychopomps are grooming her for a special cases type of job? She can do things they can't and because she's alive she doesn't have to worry about the no meddling rule.

Yeah, Annie hasn't necessarily become a psychopomp at all, she's probably more like a special agent of the psychopomps now.

From their perspective it'd be perfect: she's a walking, talking loophole who can guide people into the Ether and fireball poo poo at the same time, and she's also besties with a powerful warrior, a weird and insanely powerful luck machine, and a robot goddess while also having lots of Court and Forest connections she can work. The psychopomps have their own powers but they don't have any of that.

I don't think so. Having several names for the same thing allows to avoid making your sentences too repetitive, and that's IMO the entire reason why both "afterlife guide" and "psychopomp" are used.

Surma/Antimony have a unique position in that, barring accident, they're never going to be collected by a psychopomp. This probably gives them an assumption of impartiality as far as the psychopomps are concerned. Annie stepping into Surma's external consultant/adjudicator role is probably way more valuable to them than just another competitor.

This chapter Kind of fell flat, for me at least. The combination of everyone with any power continuing to be ambivalent/a dick would be fine enough on it's own but the entire setup for this felt more like a contrivance of events rather than something either set off by the Psychopoms in some masterstroke of a plan or really anything but kind of a forced series of events so plot thing happens.

I think the best punchline for this comic would be Frank returning the thing, completely fine. He's covered in blood, there's an island on fire right off the coast, and in he strolls.

"I'd like my deposit back."

As for the comic, there is a LOT of stuff to unpack coming up. Jeanne's departure has probably changed a lot of the dynamics between the Court and the Forest, and Coyote probably isn't going to like his Fire-Hair girl being stolen by the Psychopomps.
