My good friend at 6forty radio has put together a 44 page pdf of his favourite discoveries of the year, and he's like, the god-king of uncovering obscure post-rock. I honestly have no idea when the man finds time to sleep. Anyways, I figure you lot may fancy a look at it.

The Appleseed Cast and Caspian each put on really good performances last night. Caspian specifically sounded really loud and good. Definitely recommend checking out that show if they're playing near you.

Not strictly post-rock either but this great band Virta just released their second album: http://spoti.fi/2gtevw2 Their debut was full of beautiful instrumental stuff and so is this new one.

I've been following Tom's Story, a local post-rock band with interest. I've seen them live twice and they've been impressive. They're on Spotify, too: https://open.spotify.com/album/19FS8sUgAYUSN0p6K2g2ys

So apart from Mogwai recording a new album, do we have news about forthcoming albums this year? 2016 was an amazing year for PR so I doubt 2017 will match it.

Grails has a new album soon, it's pretty decent. I wasn't blown away by it at first but it really grew on me, defiantly worth picking up and giving it a few spins.

Well, there's a new Arms & Sleepers track, but it's a hip-hop track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUxlwOz4dpc I mean their last album was pretty chill electronic music / instrumental hip-hop, but I didn't exactly expect them to go all the way with the hip-hop thing...

I wish they would go back to that sound they had in Matador. That is one of my all time favorite albums. I can respect musicians evolving and changing their style but man do I miss that sound.

I just got done listening to the whole album (Life Is Everywhere, which I didn't know was out yet) and it's pretty much a chill as gently caress blend of the straight-up hip-hop on Hollow Body Hold and the instrumental hip-hop on Swim Team throughout. It rules. And I'm glad it exists and came out in January because it feels like it succeeds where the new Bonobo album failed for me, and that one also came out in January. But yeah, post-rock this is not. I dug that old Matador sound but I dig this one too. They're one of those artists I've loved for...god, almost a decade now no matter what they put out. It's all good in my eyes.

This band describes their style as "avant garde experimental funk rock jazz jazzgrind nerd pronk psychedelic saxophone shred skronk spazz jazz zappaesque". I really do think pronk best describes their sound. They sound like The Minutemen crashed into an ugly horn section and mutated into a creature unknown by science. https://bigevil.bandcamp.com/releases

Any band that describes themselves this way I immediately entertain no thought of listening to. If you have to try that hard to describe your music, nah. Also, Zappaesque? Immediately a "stay away" sign, as well as making Zappa spin in his grave.
