Roger Goodell just said in his press conference that they're looking at reducing the commercial breaks from 5 to 4 per quarter. that sounds like a good thing! still insists that the TNF games are actually quality though

I think it will be extremely interesting to watch how Belichick tries to contain the Falcons offense. I almost feel like 100% selling out to stop Julio Jones is kind of a trap, because as good as he is, the offense is basically exactly as productive when he's just drawing coverage and the ball is actually going to everyone else but him. If Jones gets 200 yards and everyone else gets 200, or Jones gets 50 and everyone else gets 350, it's kind of the same thing either way. It might be that he tries to eliminate specific kinds of plays that the Falcons excel at rather than specific players executing them, if that makes any sense. poo poo, they might be better off just emptying out the box, sticking every son of a bitch in coverage and daring them to run the ball. Just say "gently caress it" and make dime the base defense. Better to give up 200 on the ground than 400 in the air, especially if it turns out the Pats can get some quick scores on the Atlanta defense. But really I have no friggin' idea. Going into the Super Bowl against the Seahawks I thought there were some good matchups for the Patriots on both sides of the ball that gave them a small edge, but I really have NO loving idea this time. If the Pats D gives up 50 I'd be pissed but not surprised because they've been a fraudulent "#1 scoring defense" all year. If the Falcons just spaz and lose ugly I'd be happy but not that surprised either. I can't remember the last time I felt like I had less of an idea of what would happen in a football game.

Also, keep in mind Atlanta is 7-0 when Jones has 60 yards or less or doesn't even play so limiting Julio isn't the deathwish it once was.

On the other hand, I don't know why the Atlanta defense has much hope against the Patriots offense, either. The Patriots are exactly the kind of offense that a "young but improving defense" runs into and gets slapped around by because of their inexperience. The way to beat Brady is by hitting him early and often - but Atlanta's pass rush is extremely average and pretty much entirely dependent on 1 player.

This defense has held it's own against better offenses for long stretches, they just struggle to do it for a full 4 quarters. I have no doubt Brady is going to learn them some things over the course of this game, but this defense is fast, physical and they are out for blood. It is a work in progress no doubt, but there has been progress.

The Patriots have rushed 3 more then anyone this season, and Matt Ryan is comically good against those rushes. Of course, the Patriots have also been facing garbage quarterbacks for most of that with large leads, and not felt the need to rush. Where Matt Ryan has been most susceptible has been CB blitzes which aren't terribly common against that offense for obvious reasons, but Logan Ryan is solid on those. The Pats probably have to send 4 guys most of the time with a few mixed in blitzes or they'll get eaten alive by Ryan. Brady fades worst against interior pressure, but is comically good against blitzing. The Falcons did a bunch of slot blitzing early on Rodgers and hit him real good, but that rarely works on Brady. The Patriots' tackles are also playing incredibly well right now, so the Falcons may move pass rushers inside to try and pressure, which will likely lead the Patriots to run more often on the interior. The oddest change this year is Brady has been throwing deep often on blitzes, and they've been abnormally successful. Honestly, when talking about slowing down the offenses, I would expect both to be around 30 points as a baseline, because each team probably scores on at least half their possessions the way they've been playing vs how the defenses have been.

Hah, yeah. Both teams have 11 turnovers. Tied for 3rd least ever. The most concerned I am is Dion Lewis who is the kind of back who should feast in a game like this, but who also has a bit of a fumbling problem. I suspect he plays the lions share of snaps over Blount while the game is competitive.

That leaves a lot of uncertainty going into it, but hopefully results in a cool and good game. Also the Patriots have kind of not been very diverse on defense compared to years past. They've pretty much played zone, rushed 3-4 dudes and rarely blitzed. I don't know if that's just because they didn't think they needed to do anything else like Kalli said, or if Belichick doesn't feel like he has a roster that can do the "mutate massively every week out of loving nowhere" thing this year, or what. Now watch them come out in some kind of wacky 2-2-7 defense or some poo poo.

I often read people saying that the teams facing the Patriots should just "move their pass rushers into the middle" but isn't an interior pass rush a whole other position? Like Mercilus and Geno Atkins are players that come to mind when you talk about interior pass rush, but does just moving guys from the edge to the middle ever work, unless they are athletic phenoms?
