You're buying 4x5 gear without any solid intent to buy a 4x5 camera? Why?

e: Like what if you now find a great deal on a 4x5 with holders etc

I chanced on some holders, figured why not, if I don't get a camera, I can use them for some fancy pinhole work, or sell em.

e: 5 4x5 holders, one 6 shot 4x5 magazine, and a steel 35mm development roll for $40, why not?

I'm still not getting out very often, once every month or two, hopefully with more regularity as time goes by.

I bought a Lubitel 166b from a shady vendor in Ukraine because after shooting with a Zenit 11 a bunch I figured nothing could be as bad as that was. I was wrong, there isn't really a limit to how bad it can get from the FSU. Mechanically the camera is dead simple and works just fine aside from questionable light seals, but the viewfinder is just awful. Praying to an invisible sky wizard will bring your image into focus more effectively than the finder will. If you have plenty of light and/or time and a tripod its not so bad and takes rather nice images at higher apertures. So of course I had to go and hand hold it in the shade.

That said it was still cheap ($30CDN) fun that will look good sitting on my shelf and never being touched again.

Yeah, I love me some lovely Soviet cameras and I wouldn't buy a Lubitel unless I'd really had a chance to play around with it - and the guys on the Andriivskiy Descent aren't great at letting you do that.

I have a Smena because I got it for free with another camera, that's probably the only camera that's worse than a Lubitel.

I finally developed about two years worth of film. New Mexico is cool:

Legends die but anime is forever.

RIP The Lost Otakus.

I'm going to Israel soon, so I thought I'd actually go back and follow through with getting the medium format camera I wanted last year. I really wanted to shoot square 6x6, but looking everything over it seems like the Pentax 645 is probably the best place to start? My budget is kind of tight and I like the idea of just going from 35mm/a DSLR to something comparable. Am I on the right track?

Grab something like a Minolta Autocord if you want a value for money 6x6 camera. If you still want a DSLR shaped camera, get a Pentax 67. Don't waste your time with 645.

What makes you say this?

If you want to shoot 6x6, shoot 6x6. If the cost of Hasselblad is an issue, there's other options.
