That's pretty awesome. Thank you Square-Enix. I will probably actually get this game now.

I've never actually played a Platinum game - I watched Chip Cheezum LP Metal Gear Rising and I was like "nope, I can't do any of this."

I like to think I'm at least an average or maybe slightly below average gamer on the whole but that's with regards to menus and whatnot. Parrying and poo poo? Not for me.

I don't disagree in the least and I've never used the feature in games that have them purely because I can play better than it when it's activated, but it harms no one by existing and helps however many need it, so it's definitely a cool thing to have.

It existing gets some people real elitist moods and upset though.

Serious action game fans and fighting game fans are the worst in my experience.

I hear any game with an element of competition attracts a terrible crowd though but I have less familiarity with StarCraft players.

Devil May Cry 1 has an easy automatic feature too, as a matter of fact. Which means it's been a feature since what many agree to be the beginning of the sub-genre.

Even based on the demo alone, NieR: Automata appears to be jam packed with accessibility features or other features you wouldn't really expect a game like it to have, like zooming the camera way in or out to customise how you play the game. That also includes full controller button remapping.
To be fair it was still the old days when easy modes were locked behind game over shame walls.

bloodychill posted:

DMC1 having an easy automatic feature is weird. Like that is not the kind of game you play for the story, the main draw is the gameplay. But I guess if people are using, who am I to judge?
It was originally positioned as a survival horror game in marketing and critical response because of its heritage as a Resident Evil spin off so there were a lot of people not used to beat em ups who were looking for story.

History has since cleaved the genre into its own but I guess easy auto mode is probably easier to tune than the other difficulties so no reason not to include it.

I played Hard/Casual in Awakening and it was fun until I got too powerful and steamrolled every map. They really needed a "restart map" button in that game for classic mode. Soft-resetting the console got old quickly.

Nah, they should take a cue from racing games and add a "rewind turn" button. Give a slider for the max amount of turns to roll back.

Tactics Ogre did this with a 50-turn counter that allowed you to explore multiple branches and test a variety of options to engage your enemies. It was a nice feature, but it neutered any pretense of difficulty the game might have possessed.

Considering how many escort missions and protect NPC missions there were, the rewind feature made the game playable at times instead of not

I think 5 and 6 are the only that have really lovely ports, though 3 and 4 are the DS remakes and 2 and 3 are bad games in general.

e: ^^ Good choice! As I suggested, you might want to use an Augment FAQ so you don't miss some good ones, though it's kinda spoilery if you go that route.

I believe 1, 4, 7, and 9 should all be fine (use an augment FAQ if you play 4). 2's good if you don't mind the weird battle system, 3's alright but got some bullshit parts, 5 and 6 have better versions but if you don't mind the bad graphics they're perfectly playable.

Well if you're playing the iOS version, I believe it has Quicksave inside of dungeons so that is one bullshit part removed. Original DS version had no save in dungeons and that is very bad.

Random turn order in fights which can be pretty bad against bosses. Well, it's not completely random. Monks using Retaliate or Counter or whatever it was always go first. Some other actions also have high priority but sadly, healing is not one of them.

Bosses usually get two moves in when it's their turn which can spell doom if you're unlucky.

(Although, while we're on that note, I just want to say that 3DS' multi-turn bosses are nothing compared to Shin Megami Tensei's bullshit. Nocturne had Dragon's Eye and now Digital Devil Saga has Rage. I never heard one peep about those.)

Some of the early dungeons are very gimmicky.

But overall, I liked 3 a lot. I consider it about as fun to play as any other game in the series. Good music, too.

You're also expected to change class on a dime to accomodate a dungeon's gimmick, then penalised for it. People like to retort that the penalty doesn't affect much, but it was a stupid change when the NES version did just fine using a cost (of a currency you got for battling) instead.

Your access to JP increases as you get further in the game though if you don't choose to focus your jobs you'll have to grind a bit to get them maxed,

Yeah, try to focus on only a couple jobs per character that seem like they might synergize well. It's really easy to get in a mindset of grinding JP until your eyes glaze over and you get bored with the game and just stop playing it one day. A lot of people have finished the game for the first time when participating in the Four Job Fiesta that limits you to four jobs, after multiple attempts playing the "normal" way, because it forced them to not grind a ton of jobs and just play the drat game.

To be fair, you can mostly ignore the gimmicks after the Mini dungeons - everything else can be brute forced really. Hein with Geomancers, the multiplying enemies just by hitting them hard enough.

Truth. This is exactly what I did when I played the game.

Dark Knight just isn't that great. Souleater is too risky to use in any real fight.

Although Red Mage in FF3D is frickin' awesome. They are both stylish and useful.

Dear thread, today I was at Target waiting for a prescription to get filled and I found Curtain Call on clearance for $6.24. Now I'm going to have tons of fun beating up adorable monsters to the rhythm of some sweet tunes. That's my story, thanks for listening.

Oh also there was a second copy, and they're sealed new. What are the odds I could have bought both and sold one for a net profit?

They're selling for about $15 used on Amazon, so $6.24+$3 to ship it+$1 for an envelope+Amazon's cut, you probably could have come out ahead $3-5.
