Open up the password protected shop (Substory 8) and buy the motor. It's the 2nd best one you can buy without dream machine gambling. The next highest doesn't show up until you beat race #6.

The bumper plate isn't really needed for Race #4. it's really a nice to have for race 5 on, but I beat the first 6 races without it.

It's moot now anyway. Got lucky and his stuff didn't really start having a real effect until near the end and beat him by about a mil. Glad that's done.

Actually yes, the game has crashed exactly one time on me and it was during the one time I played poker.

I just got to Majima's chapter, turned 1000 chips into like 30,000 at holdem and then the game crashed. I was bummed for a second, but then realized it just means I should actually play the game I bought instead.

This is my first Yakuza game, and poker bugs aside, it loving owns. I heard of these before, but I had it in my head that they were just another lovely GTA ripoff. Now I'm bummed I've lived this long without them.

This is my first Yakuza game, and I'm just wondering at what point do I really get free reign to go do dumb side quests and things? I'm still in the first chapter, at the point where I'm about to head to the Dojima HQ and renounce my official gangster title. I spent a little time playing a claw machine and Outrun but I couldn't see much else right now!

The first chapter is pretty railroaded, but the whole game's 11 chapters and you can start freely dicking around in chapter 2. You've got plenty of time.

I think that's pretty much how it got marketed (if you can even call it that) back when Yakuza 3 was coming out. GTA X Shenmue, but I don't think that really did it any justice at all. It's its own beast.

I'd wait until you get Kiryu's money minigame on Chapter 6 before you go full hog on side stuff. It's progress is based on time spent in-game, so you can check in and then gently caress off to play Mahjong or bowling or Outrun or whatever untill it's time to collect.

Speaking of Mahjong, the Doras do NOT count as a yaku by themselves, right? I'm pretty sure that's the case, but there were a couple of weird cases where I didn't know why I was winning.

Also, how do the points work when you draw?

No, doras are just bonus points if you can get them.

When you draw, every hand is checked to see if it's in tenpai (1 tile off winning) or not. Everyone who is in tenpai shares 3000 points between them - everyone who isn't loses a shared 3000 points between them. Any riichi sticks are carried forward to the next game and form a pot that the winner will pick up. Tenpai doesn't give a poo poo whether your hand is legal / in furiten or not, so if it looks like you're headed for a draw, pick up any old poo poo if it'll progress your hand.

I'm surprised to see so few people complaining about this minigame. It's like they took Saejima's dojo from 4 and removed everything that had an element of enjoyment or player control to it.

E: I guess they thought players wouldn't notice because of the gratuitous t&a

I mean, it's pretty upfront rock/paper/scissors that lets you try to button mash to resolve a tie. I'm not sure what's to bitch about, you know exactly what you're getting after you play it once. You also can get such a dumb amount of money from real estate that I don't think anyone is too bothered by losing a few million on Rumble Roses Salty Bets.

You also can easily save scum it if you're not to the point of burning money yet. The first time I played it, I went outside, saved, plunked down 10 million which was most of my bankroll at the time, and won like 50 million back. Thanks weird porno librarian looking lady! Then I never played it again.

Oh yeah, if you're a trophy completionist it's probably a real bad time. I've long given up on trying to platinum a Yakuza game, there's always poo poo I'm just never going to bother to get any good at (looking at you, Shoji).

This one was annoying. You have to go check out Serena, which Kiryu will state is too unsafe, and then to Kashiwagi's Tojo headquarters just down the road where you and Nishki hang out. Then Kiryu goes to Serena anyway.

At that point, I wandered for hours doing side stories and goofing around with slot-car racing and drunk darts and park gambling and making real-estate money. I only found how to advance the story by accidentally walking too close to the office.

Yeah, it's dumb. Actually, in the middle of checking out the Tojo headquarters, I had an epiphany. "Ah ha! I bet they want me to go back to that abandoned building where the bartender worked, I'll have to go there after this" and then it went to a cutscene and the plot progressed anyway.
