Anime has giant robots, therefore anime is good. But seriously though, how the hell does the anime industry function? As far as I know, it's geared towards selling to a small, niche group of shut-ins with far too much money, hence the gradual gearing towards the weirder (which is good) and more hosed up (which is bad) end of the spectrum. How does it even survive like that?

Right now there are a bunch of comedy things on the air along the lines of "This one's about a woman and her maid, but the maid's a dragon!" "How about a high school student obsessed with video games, but she's an angel!" whereas not too long ago there was a bunch of monster girl poo poo, before that was a bunch of awful anime with vague incest overtones about siblings and cousins, it was weird. Between this poo poo you get stuff like One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 and generally cool things that won't get more than one season, as well as stuff that won't ever die like One Piece.

Mob Psycho 100 is amazing and everyone should watch it. Right now it seems like it's starting to go more towards sports anime again, along with a second trend for grimdark poo poo. At least, based on crunchyroll's most popular, anyway. Looking forward to the weird slice of life ones like Nichijou to start happening again.

Like in the 90s I really enjoyed it but then everything got all wacky for wacky sake and every character had some really dumb over the top character trait that was clearly supposed to be clever but was just annoying in practice. I keep trying to find stuff I actually would like, but it always seemed to be aimed at some weirdo creeper demo or have some mundane thing but with a twist! The most recent thing I saw that i actually like was Gate, even though it does have a loli character and it's written by a guy who I think read Mishima Yukio's manifesto and though "yea, Japan needs to go back to pre ww2 militarism, because that didn't end badly". I want stuff with a story, that doesn't get bogged down in trying to be wacky or too grimdark. I liked Evangelion, and Escaflowne and El-Hazard (what is it with me and anime that begins with E?) and i've not yet found much that comes close. Gurran Legan was the most recent anime that I really enjoyed.
