Honestly the main reason most older solid-state amps sound like poo poo when pushed is that they were not designed to do so. They were designed to have loads of clean headroom, and if they had a dirt channel, it was likely just the cheapest distortion circuit possible dropped in front of the clean channel. If you're pushing the power amp on an older solid-state to clipping, you're almost certainly letting the magic smoke out of other components, or completely blowing your speaker. Also, most solid-state amps until the dawn of digital modeling were designed to be as cheap as possible. Tube amps were also of course originally designed not to distort, but thanks to their slew rate, the initiation of tube clipping is much more gradual and the result is much more rounded, giving a pleasant tone. So while that was a happy accident in the 50s, by the 60s and 70s amp designers were designing with tube clipping in mind. Very very few designers ever really designed the amplification stages of solid-state amps to clip softly. Not that they couldn't, but it's kind of a pointless exercise when all you're doing is essentially tossing in a distortion pedal that most players would just buy themselves anyway. Seymour Duncan has a pretty good blog post about how not only the technologies, but the timing and specific applications of those technologies shaped direction and opinion in the amp industry.

I played that Toto song at work and I think it got me close to getting my rear end kicked. I didn't know that many people could hear until a bunch of them were like DUDE WHAT THE gently caress. Then I played Hotel California and my friend started laughing so hard he pulled a muscle and had to use all the muscle pain gel from the first aid kit. Total success.

Traynor knew the TS-series was going to sound like poo poo, so they worked out some post-gain smoothing of the sound. The bass player for Shellac uses one, as heard here.

Edit: Also I loving hate wooden pick-up rings and knobs, I think they look stupid as poo poo.

So 1 to 10 how stupid music poo poo is it if I have zero electrical engineering experience and I want to build a Klon Centaur clone kit/diy project like this one: https://aionelectronics.com/project/refractor-centaur-overdrive/ ?? That is, I know V=IR

That one looks like a pain in the rear end cause you gotta source your parts but you can get some easier to do kits w/ instructions that should walk you through, that include all the parts you'll need like this one http://store.generalguitargadgets.com/kc-complete-kit.html

Some stuff like "resistor color code" "how to read a capacitor" and "what's a resistor" you can google or shoot me a PM and I can help out.

Although you may want to start out with a baby mode circuit to practice on before diving into full on clone kits.
