Main thing that stood out to me in that video his how far forward dudes bent at the waist when building up speed. Gretzky could almost kiss his knees in some of those rushes. Compare to a modern skater like Crosby where they use more of a squat, keeping their nose more or less even with their knees.

TK back in the lineup! But scratching Read, the only player to score a 5 on 5 goal for the Flyers in the last 3 games Ghost still out. Dave Isaac thinks sitting Ghost again is really starting to irritate the rest of the team.

There's also the issue of Tony Esposito, who shows up in that video a few times getting schooled by 99 and 17. Unless people are saying Tony O was a bad goaltender at which point there might be a fight breaking out soon.

Oh yeah, Gretzky was fantastic no question but in the mid-80s average save percentage hovered around .875 a full 40 points lower than it is today. It's an imperfect system to be sure, but an era adjusted Gretzky is still #1 in points but by a considerably smaller margin. It's nearly impossible to overstate how much the advent of butterfly goaltending changed the sport.

Half of the players in the Gretzky-era NHL were snorting coke and chugging vodka between periods, and focused most of their energy on murdering each other. The puck was of secondary importance. Gretzky was really good at paying attention to the puck.

Gretzky was also a really great player deep into the 90's. In 98 he was 1 point off 2nd for scoring when he was 37, his back was shot and he was on a crap team.

Goalies get assymetric leg pads. One like the modern ones, and one more like a skater's. A harder, more armorlike leg protector.

I really don't see why making the nets bigger is seen as such a fundamental and sacreligious change that it's seemingly a non-starter everywhere I see it discussed but somehow changes like making the whole rink bigger or eliminating offsides or other radical rule changes are taken more seriously.

Obviously buying out Fleury is the failsafe, although it's possible he somehow gets hurt at the end of the season and can't be bought out (that's a thing right?) The thing I can't seem to figure out is the Pittsburgh bribing Vegas thing. If Murray has to be exposed, what could the Penguins possibly offer Vegas that would be better than just taking Murray for free? Like, Pittsburgh won the cup last year and are looking pretty good this year too, so their draft picks have to be some of the least valuable. Presumably Vegas can pick up depth and AHL players from lots of other teams or wherever. Is there some roster player(s) or prospect(s) that Pittsburgh can and would part with that would convince Vegas not to take the good, young, free goalie?

Lemieux coming back in old dead puck 01 and putting up 76 in 43 is probably my favorite old man season. Granted no one would touch him until the playoffs, but man. It was a bit tragic when the Devils smoked them in the ECF, doubly so when they didn't even finish it off because of the league wide conspiracy to make Ray Bourque feel good e: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rUmV8QJ8dA&t=457s T-Bone fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Feb 6, 2017 |
