There's a weird concept that Republican President leads to better action flicks that I don't think holds up. Yes, the 80's had a ton of great flicks, but so did the 90's, and aside from the first Matrix I have a hard time remembering truly excellent action flicks from the Bush years, whereas Obama got us John Wick, Fury Road and the three best Fast and Furious movies, also 2 good Rocky movies.

The Matrix came out well before the election, though. Like, a year and a half before the election. So Bush can't even claim that one.

Woah woah woah, 120fps?

I know The Hobbit movies were shot in 48fps (2x the normal framerate) and that sucked rear end as a viewing experience, but what's the point of shooting at 5x the normal framerate? Smoother 3D or something?

That seems like it would have the opposite effect and make everything look like a garbage soap opera like that lovely motion interpolation effect on HDTVs. That's what happened with The Hobbit. Well, the first one at least. I learned my lesson and didn't see the second 2 movies in that trilogy in HFR.

It was to make it super-realistic, which helped with the giant stadium spectacle mixed with Billy obviously suffering some sort of PTSD-like thing (and maybe there was an action scene in the flashbacks that worked with it, not sure cuz I didn't want to see it) and be some sort of technical marvel, but it turned out most theaters couldn't even play the film because it was so advanced. Some directors get so caught up with the technical side of things they forget to focus on everything else about the film, including making it look good and having good stories, George Lucas is usually the go to example here.

You should read up on the AHA. They are full on shills for Hollywood. A bunch of animals died making Lord of the Rings and they claimed it wasn't animal abuse. as for Death Sentence, I'm amazed people even remember that movie but I'm pretty firmly in the "James Wan didn't get at all good until Insidious" camp. If you want a good, grimy revenge movie of that era, Man on Fire blows it out of the water.

I'd definitely agree that the car chase in Death Proof is one of the best action sequences of that era, Death Proof is a little light on action to really feel like an exceptional action movie though.

Really, I'd say 2009-present has been much more fertile ground for great and forward-thinking action cinema than 2000-2008: The Raid 1&2, Universal Soldier 4 & 5, Mad Max: Fury Road, John Wick, Haywire, Dredd, Drive, '71, Drug War, Edge of Tomorrow, the Fast & Furious series getting actually good starting with Fast Five, even some oddball stuff like Enthiran or Hanna or the Planet of the Apes movies.

i don't think he got great until Insidious, but the things that make him a good director didn't spring up from nothing in that movie. I'll agree that Man On Fire is better, but I don't think it's really that big of a gap between the two in quality.

and it's... kind of weird as an adaptation, because the plot is completely different but the themes made it across pretty much completely intact. which is the opposite of the Bronson movie, which nailed the plot and turbofucked the themes to make it a less dark movie.
