My mother in law was a primary school teacher before she retired. A couple of years ago they had a kid from India whose family had immigrated to Australia just in time for their daughter Swastika to start school. She sat the family down with the principal and they explained to the family - while doing things like showing them pictures of Hitler, and describing the Holocaust etc - that maybe little Swastika going by a different name in their new life in Australia was a good idea. I think they went with Susan. Funny thing is both parents had excellent English skills, their education just hadn't ever covered WWII.

Aside from the swastika's origin as a Hindu symbol, there's also the somewhat puzzling fact that Hitler is reasonably popular in India, where a lot of people think of nationalism as this great thing.
