"Halitosis is a deformation of the soul." -- (Young) Pope Pius XII This series is fascinating, thought provoking, visually stunning and somehow manages to be both subtly and cartoonishly funny. Love it. Also, NO, NOT THE KANGAROO. There really is no God, is there?

Grem posted:Seriously, who's the guy I need to google to find out what other visuals he's done? Art director? Cinematographer? Well, generally speaking it's a combined effort between the cinematographer(s), director(s) and editor(s). In this case, specifically, though, I'm pretty sure most credit goes to the cinematographer, Luca Bigazzi. That's going by what I've found on IMDb, including the credits for something titled The Young Pope: A Tale of Filmmaking that I hope I get to see soon. e: Generally I think art directors oversee things like set design, wardrobe, and other important visual design aspects. They don't necessarily call the shots in those departments, because they have their own heads and such, but they make sure everything fits the production's target aesthetic, sort of like an artistic supervisor. That is, they deserve some credit in the matter, too, but I still think you're probably looking for Bigazzi. e2: Also, Luca Bigazzi has 99 cinematography credits, so have fun! The suicide of Angelo Sanchez is a deciding factor. I give Voiello credit for identifying Lenny as Angelo's killer, and I give Lenny credit for swallowing that accusation. I see Lenny's overall plan is to incite a spiritual revolution in the church that will settle things like its ambiguity and hypocrisy on homosexuality, but in the real world, there have already been too many young people like Angelo. It's better that the real church learn from Lenny's church rather than any future pope behave as Lenny does.

We may have lost the greatest supporting cast member in Ep 8 as part of the Hero's Journey, but that just means they can return for the surreal sequences! Big fan of how they handled the main intrigue of Ep 8---show is so good about taking shots across the bow.

This show goes over my head sometimes, and some of the scheming/machinations will probably make more sense to me on a rewatch once all the episodes are out. I started out the first few episodes thinking Lenny was going to be some kind of Liberal Pope and shake up things with the old timers, but now I feel like I'm constantly a few steps behind with character motivations. I think the show is visually stunning. I love the sets, the cinematography and Lenny's outfits (I like all the costumes, but it might be related to lighting/setpiece contrast since you can't really jazz up Cardinal or nun outfits). Voiello's soccer-watching gear was amazing. A question about the opening. At the end that meteor knocks over a statue of John Paul II. Anybody know if there's some sort of symbolism to that statue being taken out, or is it just more 'this ain't your puppy's pope!'

Meteors, falling stars, are often used symbolically to represent "the fallen one."

It's a sculpture by Maurizio Cattelan. Apparently, the idea of a very liberal Pope was what Sorrentino started with when he decided to make a show about a young Pope, but the abdication by Benedict and the election of the very liberal Pope Francis lead him in a different direction. https://www.perrotin.com/artists/Maurizio_Cattelan/2/la-nona-ora/15420

Combined with Esther's miraculous pregnancy and Lenny's story about the conclave, God definitely seems to listen whenever Lenny speaks Which is extremely interesting to consider, seeing as Lenny isn't even certain that God exists at all LadyPictureShow posted:A question about the opening. Yea, they didn't set up that death to be poisoning at all. There was nothing that suggested anyone would even try it or had access. Lenny using God as a hitman seems pretty cool and I'm on board, cause I was just praying the other day God would kill someone for me.

Lenny sees the Kangaroo as being very much like himself. First he was locked up but now's he been set free. But he's completely out of his element in a strange place. Lenny has this illusion of control but it's clear as he tightens his grip and hides in the Vatican he's actually just locking himself up in a place he doesn't quite belong and it's damaging the Church. Lenny finds the Kangaroo dead and then speaks to a crowd of tens of people in St. Peter's Square. There's even very little press coverage now of him. He realizes like the Kangaroo if he stays locked up here in the Vatican it's actually doing irreparable damage so he starts to soften his stance a bit and decide to go to Africa where he plans on making his first public appearance. Instead he ends up making a stand against war and in the process gives a beautiful speech which is the first step on redeeming his Papacy.

Unless they re-edited the series for the American airing which would be weird. As I said above I'm pretty sure it was one of the deciding factors of him going to Africa. It was a combination of that, the dwindling masses in St. Peter's Square, and his talk with Spencer about his belief in God.

I think part of it is that God will do seemingly anything for him, except give him the one thing in the world he's always wanted. That's why he doubts. I think I could watch this show a dozen times and still not understand it. But it's just so well shot and scored that I love it, even when I don't understand what's going on.
