A new Ikea in Burbank, CA is opening, and people started waiting in line at noon on Tuesday for the opening, as Ikea was giving away furniture to the first dozen or so in line.

There was some sort of argument / disturbance at the front of the line, so Ikea changed it from a giveaway to a raffle. The linked article doesn't report that, but it was discussed on the ABC7 tv news program at about noon pacific time.

Grand openings being botched is so ridiculous. I had a local burrito place who:

  • Advertised one free burrito for every customer every Wednesday for the entire summer, no purchase necessary, within walking distance to a university
  • Week 1, with at least 300 people in line (I counted 180 inside the store and almost as many queued outside) decided to limit it to the first 100 customers, then backpedaled when they heard the blowback
  • They made it the first 200 customers the second week
  • The third week they limited it do customers who were in line by 11:30

They went out of business in September. I can only imagine a summer of negative sales Wednesdays didn't help.

Seriously, businesses just need to read one article on Chik-Fil-A to figure out how to do grand openings without pissing people off or breaking the bank.

If you dress like that and carry a gun into a building full of people who routinely have to deal with dangerous people with guns, you do not get to be surprised by their reactions. Also if you lie about whether you have mental issues on your gun permit paperwork.

I'd be fine with open carry were it not for the people who are most enthusiastic about it all being such dumbasses.

That explains why my channel has 150 subscribers!

No, wait, I still don't know why I have that high of number.

It actually sounds slightly deeper than that since apparently a negative subscriber count prevents new subscribers from occurring, but that's not really that significant. It's pretty clear that the field that holds the subscriber count exists mainly for displaying how many subscribers there are, not for any actual handling of subscribers. They probably use it as a flag for certain account statuses as well.

quote:

Overview
1. “You should get out of town”, the man said.
2. And so began the journey that resulted in my path intersecting with Matthew Duncan’s path. And thence to these reasons, with a slight detour through territory that might have confused Lewis Carroll.
3. I suppose that I should clarify that there was no menace in the man’s directive to me to get out of town. He was a friend and a colleague in two careers. His suggestion had been that he and I should change positions for a fortnight, giving him exposure to the realities of the northern reaches of Toronto, while I would enjoy a similar change of environment in the more sylvan environs of Niagara Region. I might even see a few plays in the evenings, he pointed out.
4. And thus I came to meet Mr. Duncan.
5. At heart, Mr. Duncan’s case was unremarkable. A minor alleged Highway Traffic Act offence led to a police-citizen interaction in the parking lot of Mr. Duncan’s apartment building in the wee hours of the morning. A request that Mr. Duncan produce his licence led to an alleged refusal, which led to an attempt to arrest him, which led to a struggle, which was captured on a very poor quality video taken on a mobile phone, at the end of which Mr. Duncan found himself being placed under arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Nothing unusual in all that. The bread and butter of provincial court.
6. Of course, I hadn’t counted on the freemen on the land.
7. Mr. Duncan was self-represented. Other than a mildly annoying disinclination on his part to stand when addressing the court (although he did stand when questioning witnesses), he was a rather pleasant young man. Unfortunately, he was a rather pleasant young man whose mind was filled with what my late father would have called “notions”.

It just gets better as it goes.

My favorite part is how the judge was thinking "oh my god I'm going to have to go through all of this gibberish and refute each and every part" and then is so clearly happy when another judge did it for him. That decision he cites is really long and there's no way I'm going to read the whole thing, but the introduction alone is pretty great:

Citation: Meads v. Meads, 2012 ABQB 571 posted:

This Court has developed a new awareness and understanding of a category of vexatious litigant. As we shall see, while there is often a lack of homogeneity, and some individuals or groups have no name or special identity, they (by their own admission or by descriptions given by others) often fall into the following descriptions: Detaxers; Freemen or Freemen-on-the-Land; Sovereign Men or Sovereign Citizens; Church of the Ecumenical Redemption International (CERI); Moorish Law; and other labels - there is no closed list. In the absence of a better moniker, I have collectively labelled them as Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument litigants [“OPCA litigants”], to functionally define them collectively for what they literally are. These persons employ a collection of techniques and arguments promoted and sold by ‘gurus’ (as hereafter defined) to disrupt court operations and to attempt to frustrate the legal rights of governments, corporations, and individuals.

It seems that he was aquitted in spite of himself, and thanks entirely to a judge who cares about his job.

Good example of why it's useful to read the laws and know what it means. Not that anyone would read any regulation or act until after they need them though.
