Team is fun to watch and even the year when they were broken pieces held together with duct tape they still competed really hard. Coaches seem to hate young defensemen unless they're scoring a whole bunch. I assume a lot of it is positioning things and details that drives coaches nuts that young players don't have down yet but that most vets do well enough and when they gently caress up eh they get a pass because they're vets I'm convinced Tortorella intentionally sabotaged the Canucks at this point e: What's going to happen is that Columbus is going to mediocre their way to the 1st wildcard spot and the Rangers are going to have to play another lovely series against the Pens while Columbus romps over whatever pile of poo poo makes it out of the Atlantic

justin schultz is gonna get a big fat contract this offseason from somebody because his stats are getting kind of silly now, he's 4th in scoring for defensemen and playing 5 less minutes a game and 1 less minute on the power play than the guys ahead of him. his +/- is also 1 off from the league lead at +30, if you believe in that sort of thing

Same thing with Yandle on the Rangers. Almost as much of an asset as that #1 D, but this role requires another guy to take those harder minutes, in this case Letang, an offensive threat in his own right.

Girlfriend is from Pittsburgh, so I took her to the Avs game for her Valentine's gift. Got a lot of wierd looks as I'm wearing my Duchene third and her wearing her Crosby home, but it was fun. Her team won, and I saw they were selling World Cup Of Hockey jerseys half off. Always wanted a Team Sweden, got a Team Sweden.

I've been to three games this year, vs Boston (Loss 3-0) vs Dallas (Loss 3-0) and last night's game. It was very close to three games in a row where we were shut out.

JawKnee posted:too bad the Avs suck so bad it won't matter The Canucks drat near ended the CBJ win streak at eight so I'm not terribly surprised. What I don't like is the Jackets are getting into a pattern of "playing well against the teams they should (or think they should) play up to the level of (NYR, PIT, DET), playing like rear end against the ones they don't think they should get up to (NJD, VAN)". The CBJ must have heard I'm working at the college I attended this time 10 years ago and are trying to fully make me feel like it's 2007, because they did this against LA, Chicago, St. Louis, Edmonton, and Phoenix in 2006-07 and it frustrated the hell out of me. Just as long as Boston doesn't win the Atlantic (checks standings; thank God). There was a point reached during the 16 game win streak where the "All they need to do is finish at or just below .500 to reach 100 points" milestone was reached and...that's pretty much what's happening.

The Capitals became just the 2nd team in NHL history to score 5 or more goals in 10 straight home games last night. The last time they didn't score 5 at home was on New Year's Day.

The Capitals have abandoned all pretense of the turtle after taking early leads and it is really refreshing. Also their third line (Connolly-Eller-Burakovsky) is fantastic this season. I think they are only behind the insane Marchand-Bergeron-Pasta line in terms of possession this season. Unfortunately it looks like Burakovsky probably broke his hand last night blocking a shot but I assume that's like 6-8 weeks so he should be good to go for the playoffs. I think so too. The Pens are still very good this year and could take them down but the Pens don't have the same level of defensive excellence this year and HBK hasn't been the same. Without those two things going for them the Pens won't get too far in the playoffs unless Sid/Geno pop off. The Pens will probably still be the toughest matchup for them. If I'm Washington I want that matchup though. Sooner or later they have to vanquish their demons.

The players in the Caps locker room feel the urgency. Getting bounced by the Pens in round 2 showed them that they can't coast through the last few months of the regular season and expect wins in the playoffs. For them, they know it has to be now. TJ Oshi and Karl Alzner are both UFA's, both critical to the team, and both will rightfully demand a payday this offseason. Kuznetsov is a RFA, but they will only be able to do so much. Finally, there's the Las Vegas draft, who knows who we might lose. Our former GM is picking players. Gotta be now. Unfortunately our bye week starts on Sunday at the worst possible time. If they can come back from that and keep their current momentum, I'll drink the Koolaid and start to believe.

CBJ seem to be regressing to the mean. Torts effect seems to have worn off, and some of the players who say "I told you so" are looking right. Only thing that remains to be seen is how Torts handles this situation- and whether he can get the team winning again.

Only thing that remains to be seen is how Torts handles this situation- and whether he can get the team winning again. I mean most teams in the league no matter how good they are go through hot and cold stretches. Even if you're awesome it's hard to be awesome over an entire 82 game schedule, this is probably more the bottom end of the Blue Jackets swing that's balancing out the top end they had going early in the season. I'd also expect the Caps to come back to earth a bit as well. As for the Caps...I dunno man, too many years of them being one of the best teams in the league, if not the best team, to jump on the "this is totally their year!" bandwagon, and even if you are the best team in the league that doesn't mean the playoffs are a formality. furthermore I hope that the Rangers don't trade for Shattenkirk unless it's a steal, but I do hope they manage to make some move for defense that helps them beyond just this season. If they pull another Eric Staal trade I'm going to be pissed...
