Yeah, you had Madagascar, then out in King's Bay we had the cluster of islands with the giant compass arrow mechanisms, and finally we have Libertalia's island even further out. So we might still be in King's Bay or maybe a little bit into the Indian ocean now, since I don't remember if Libertalia was visible from the last compass arrow or if we just had a direction.

I'm pretty sure that the compass arrow was way out of sight from Libertalia.

That could actually be a far more reasonable test for potential residents, actually, seeing as going to an unknown destination given only a vector would be a decent test of sea navigation.

Yeah, my first reaction to him asking which way to the plane was "no don't lead him back to the plane, he'll just blow it up to keep you guys on the island!" Thankfully he didn't have to go that far.

The last clue was a spyglass on the compass island, which Nate saw the Libertalia island from.

I'm surprised no one point out something neat Naughty Dog did in this chapter. At around the 16:30 mark when Nate's flashlight starts to go out you can knock the handle of the controller against your palm or leg or whatever and Nate will essentially do the same with the flashlight, getting it to work again. So you actually don't have to go through that tunnel in the dark (even though it's mostly straight). The second time it happens you can try it again, but the flashlight is dead for good. I think because Chip didn't have the tips turned on it didn't give you the indicator to do it.

The music for that setpiece in the ship's graveyard rescuing Sam is ridiculously heroic. That whole piece is incredible, even if the ships' sails still being pictuesquely intact after hundreds of years is ridiculous.

It's sort of hilarious, too, how literally every problem in this game so far could have been easily avoided if either A: Rafe hadn't been a monstrously petty person, or B: Sam had just been honest with Nate. Like, all this poo poo is aimed at, ultimately, two dudes. Why does he need an army? (Ok, he needs one because he's fighting Nathan Drake, but...) Why did he bring so many mercs and not, I don't know, an excavation company? Was he expecting (modern) pirates? That would have been possibly an interesting change of pace?

Like, it's bewildering how Libertalia claimed the prior expedition considering that so far there's seemingly been few or no actual perils to the island itself?

And yeah - why is Sam so obsessively pursuing a treasure he can't get off the island? (It's just symbolic for him now!)

Libertalia, as a physical thing, did not claim the prior group to get to the island. The allure of the treasure is the theme here.

In fact, Libertalia presented no difficulties at all, and if the prior expedition hadn't one by one fallen to greed, obsession, and infighting they probably would have succeeded at retrieving the treasure.

Am I the only one massively losing sympathy for Sam? Just, this last scene has convinced me that he's not that much better than Rafe, given how both are willing to cause massive amounts of damage to historical sites and get dozens, if not hundreds, of people killed. Nadine's gonna have to go on an MGSV style recruitment drive to make up for the men Nate's killed.

But part of me feels like Sam won't earn whatever redemption comes his way- the classic "Oh, I'm going to leave the treasure behind, this shows that I am completely redeemed of my hedonistic ways that nearly got my brother killed and/or ruined his marriage and friendship with his surrogate father figure."

Sam's never been my favourite character since the whole forced retcon of his existence, but I do think that he's beyond redemption and Nate really should just cut his losses- blood is thicker than water, but at this point you just gotta say enough's enough.

You aren't alone, no. Sam sucks, Nate would be better off if he just told the guy "deuces" at this point. There was a shred of hope that he was not bluffing when he said "I'm not coming back for you" even if it meant they actually did leave and then you played the rest of the game as Sam or something.

Not as such. The Dismas-Gestas/Nate-Sam thing the plot had going on way back had doomed Sam already. The only way he was going to quit is if Nate were to be Jerk Thief instead.

Honestly, I was half-expecting him to sabotage the plane in front of their faces to drag Nate back into it all so this is kind of an improvement.
