Don't most white people not even have any non-white friends? I remember reading some statistic about that and being pretty blown away by it. So I bet for a lot of white people it's not that they can't connect the two dots, it's that they don't even really realize the two dots exist.

I think it's important to understand that a substantial majority of the country, somewhere between 60-65%, is still white. And that historically, up until recently, that number was even higher. Combine that with things like white flight and migration patterns of black people from the South to major cities in the North and Midwest, and you have a scenario where the majority of the population live in completely monochrome, segregated communities because of choices their parents or grandparents, or perhaps even further back, made decades ago at least. For a lot of white people, it's not even just hatred of black people, it's a complete failure to even recognize the significance of black people as people, along with other minorities. Their hate is abstract; they're indifferent to the humanity of minorities in practice, which is much more insidious because trying to get them to recognize problems like de facto segregation is nearly impossible when they can't even recognize why this is a problem. I wound up moving to the south through some choices of my own and some of my parents and I'm not currently in touch with any people who aren't white outside the internet. poo poo sucks and I'd have to make a conscious effort (that I have no idea how to do in a non-lovely manner) to make friends that aren't white.

I get your point, yeah. Attacking horrible people is good, but you can't just do that. You gotta build up the good people too. My favorite Black History Month thing is WWE, who like to pay tribute by remembering black wrestlers. Also for some reason they play video packages with random famous black people that has nothing to do with wrestling. Oh cool here's Ron Simmons the first black world champion for a major company, and of course The Rock, couldn't be bigger than him, and now here's Jackie Robinson and Stevie Wonder and Obama for some reason.

At least to me it comes off as a focus on black history as something that white people act in and inflict upon black people. We've already got 11 months of white people doing things, and they're still falling into the trap of looking at a situation and immediately going to the white people in the picture, rather than trying to understand the black people and their history.

It's a 'safe' stance for white people to have. Some statement like "That white person was a bad racist and it's good they're dead" won't directly offend other people but advocating for people of color might be more of a minefield for their alabaster brain. Remember that calling a white person a racist is like the 'N' word, and if there's anything more unacceptable than actual racism to a white person, it's hurting that white person's feelings.

Which is not to say that we aren't supporting the racist constructs in our society that DO oppress you, just that when we solely focus on that we're still giving ourselves/white people all the credit for both oppressing you and "saving" you. You don't get any agency in your own story. One of the Facebook groups I'm in has a person posting videos of black people in opera in recognition of black history month. It's been cool.
