Apparently the squad member that they cut was a salarian so I hope that the buff multiplayer salarian in the heavy armor is a re-purposing of that character

I can only speak to how I personally find it unappealing from a design perspective, but I'll give it a shot:

Right off the bat it doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind about whether it wants to feel mammalian or amphibious. Is it a cat or a frog? In design and animation terms, exaggeration is better than trying to be shrewd or subtle. If you want it to feel like a cat, then really push the cat aspects; fur, fans, whiskers, claws. If you want it to be a frog then go hard or go home; webbed anatomy, spots and patterns on the skin, glistening bulbous eyes. A catfrog is nothing. It's...it's just not a thing. And so by trying to be a catfrog, this too becomes just nothing.

The overall silhouette of the species is just kinda weird and blobby -- the most distinctive part is probably their draped jacket thingies -- and it's hard to say what conceptual niche they're supposed to fit into in this game world. Like, what role do we think Jaal is going to play in the party, based solely on this design? Is he a soldier guy, a tech guy, or a biotic guy? The bulky head and broad torso say "bruiser," but the predator's eyes and legs say "agile." It's really different from the other playable ME species where, like, you can take one look at them and come away with a basic idea of what their designer wants you to think they are.

The more I look at it the more the parts kinda contradict each other visually. Jaal's face in general is very angular and sharp, with a clear-cut "V"-shape...but then it's framed with those curved, soft-sinuous ear flaps. Again, compare with alien designs that have a clear idea of what they're trying to do: Turian faces are clearly sharp and bony and edged, Salarians are lithe and soft and uncluttered. Angaran faces are trying to do both, but only doing both halfway.

And speaking of which: what are those ear flaps actually for? It's the most distinctively alien part of them but it doesn't seem to serve any actual purpose than to just...hang there.

Depends on what you want.

If it's suffering, then yes!

I mean, Vanguard is fun, and Insanity Vanguard is fun, but you die so much. Especially if you play Arrival.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

Aaryn Flynn did an interview with the Playstation blogcast. I am not a big podcast listener, so I'll just copy-paste someone else's notes about the interview.

quote:

“It’s actually a story of optimism and hope, it’s not the story of trying to fight for a home and do these things it’s actually a story of potential and of reason to go explore…”

MEA embraces that combat of ME2 and 3 but with some definite improvements. They wanted to bring back something they lose from ME1 which is some of those ways to choose to play in that combat system. So there’s more choices than ever.

Switching profiles has a story tie in as to how that happens. It’s your father actually, Alec Ryder, who helps you in the early part of the game. He shows you this thing he’s worked on to do that. It’s a nice little tie in to the evolution of the gameplay.

Tactical choices all through the game. Using your squadmates as well is still an important staple to the game. Giving them things to do and having them play a certain way. Whether you want them to be in the background just providing cover fire for you or whether you want them to take more of a front and centre approach charging out there and doing things.

There are casual and narrative difficulty settings.

Cover can be destroyed. There are more physics based powers: you can pick up people and throw them at other people. You can freeze people, you can shatter them. It’s the most dynamic combat system we’ve ever had in a Bioware game.

The infiltrator profile does give you the cloak. Aaryn’s personal favourite is to play a sniper. Hanging back and plugging people from a distance.

Aaryn is a fan of scanning in ME games. It was taken away in ME3 and now they’ve brought it back again.

There are dimensions to resource management. In addition to finding resources to upgrade weapons and armour, the pathfinder must choose how you colonize. You could choose to make a planet a Science planet or put down a military outpost and you get different benefits or consequences from each choice for the overall Andromeda Initiative.

Some stuff we knew, but in particular those of you who hate scannning now know who to blame.

Inquisition was going to have upgrade-able forts that could be set up for the three specialists of Forces, Secrets or Connections and give you bonuses in the region and to the Inquisition as a whole, but it didn't make it into the full game. A version of it appears to be coming to Andromeda, given that last line.

Refugee story means hamfisted political allegory and the question of "What happened back home" needing to be answered, which makes people remember ME 3 and EA doesn't like that.

As for point 2, development is almost all Inquisition's team now, so they're basically making Inquisition in space. When did they get assigned to Andromeda, by the way?

Are there people that actually wanted scanning back besides this Aaryn fellow? I thought it was pretty universally hated, to the point where everyone just cheated themselves max resources to skip it after their first play through.

I know that planet scanning isn't coming back in the form it existed in for ME2 so hopefully they've taken notes to make it less boring, but still, I didn't think any actual players missed it. I guess if the game's going to have a heavy crafting component then scanning makes more sense but daggummit I'm aginnit

I didn't like that it was busy work that didn't really serve any purpose. Even in ME3 they always had enough poo poo that you found to restock and it was like...why even have that poo poo at all? Some systems ONLY had a fuel refill ... that's the laziest loving poo poo out there.

Money was never an issue for me. There was always a shitton of it.

If that's what it is that should be good.

Also, one of the best mods in Dragon Age Inq was the one that skipped the pick-up animations when you grabbed stuff. I hope hope hope they learned from that poo poo...especially when they metnioned how long it took to animate you getting into your Mako and dropping it as a result.

Yeah it's definitely a completely different experience, so I'm not super worried. It's just an oddly worded message, like "remember that thing we removed from the game because nobody liked it? Good news, it's back!"

If I hate it I'm sure I can just cheat again
