I doubt it. People who really think highly of the matrix are probably aging out of the viable movie-going demographic. I was blown away by it when it first came out, and I'm just shy of thirty now.

I'm fascinated by the idea that people in their 30s are...too old to go to the movies?

They don't go nearly as frequently as teenagers or early students. Busy with life or whatever. Jobs and kids. The current generation of 30-somethings go more than previous ones, but still nothing close younger demographics.

I'm kind of leery of the whole "they stole your life" thing because it just seems stupid. Why would you bother "stealing" someone and erasing their memories? There are tons of dying people you could pop into a full body prosthetic that would work exactly as well with no mustache twirling. Hell, I'm sure there are military dudes like Bato who would volunteer for the procedure. It reminds me of the comic We-3, where they decided to include the stupid detail that the animal cyborgs were originally housepets. THERE IS NO DOG SHORTAGE! THE EVIL LAB DID NOT HAVE TO STEAL A GOLDEN RETRIEVER TO GET THEIR HANDS ON ONE!

Maybe they have a good answer but I dunno...

Bugblatter
Aug 4, 2003

I'm kind of guessing "they stole it" is largely Kuze's interpretation of full cyberization. It wouldn't be much of a shift from his views in the series.

Alternatively, it's the Deus Ex situation where they did save her life but complete cyberization was not necessary, just an opportunity to go a step further that they took.

At any rate, the Major not remember he pre-cyborg life is not new. It's a detail directly from Oshii's film and a contributing factor to her existential crisis regarding her identity. The show went the opposite way and had her recall perfectly... I don't know what the manga's depiction of her past was.

The Major was turned near full cyborg as a baby/child, which allows her to more effectively use the various abilities of cybernetics and hacking since they are all she's ever known. Similar to how you are exponentially better with computers than someone who came of age prior to the 1980s/90s.

Taking a baby/child, who of course never asked for this, and making them just this side of a robot is generally what they're most likely talking about when they say that "they" stole the Major's life.

Bugblatter
Aug 4, 2003

It's not a huge departure from the major's own view in the 95 film. She bitterly comments on the fact that they are dependent on government maintenance, and that although they can quit Section 9 it would require not only leaving their cyborg bodies behind, but also erasing their all memories that inform their personality. They are "owned."

7c Nickel
Apr 27, 2008
Sure, but again, there are tons of kids with congenital defects or cancer or whatever that would serve just as well. Having to give up your super awesome cyborg body for a crappy box on wheels is still superior to dying at age 4 or whatever.

That's pretty much what happened or is implied to happen in all GitS material, so likely is the case here too. They saved a dying child and, depending on which GitS you're watching/reading, a loss of memory was a side-effect.

The downside to leaving Section 9 in the 95 film isn't having an inferior body (humanoid bodies can be purchased, that's exactly what happens at the end), it's losing a large chunk of the memories that form your identity. The Major, who is already having an existential crisis about her own existence as an individual, doesn't consider that a real option, and so she can't leave.

Kuze just seems to be stating that interpretation of the situation in bolder terms. He may believe it would have been better to be left to die. He's not saying they literally kidnapped a person to turn them into a robot...

Like... I get the TNA pose thing, but basically any dramatic pose where the hero is looking back over their shoulder at the audience is going to get some sideboob when it's an actress. That's just kinda the physics involved there. All that thick body armor really minimizes it here compared to more egregious cases.

Of all the things to adapt from GitS, the creepy sexism is not one of them.

The SAC show is pretty bad at it, but I don't recall getting worked up about the movie.

I remember the first episode where the Major steps out of the tank, and of course the camera is placed exactly where you think it would.

After all, adaptation is about finding what made the original good and adapting that - and only that.

That shot of Total Film cover is not a still from the film. We already have a trailer that depicts Major doing the exact same 'strip-and-kill' gimmicks that she does in the manga/anime, and it's actually less revealing than the manga/anime, which traded on explicit nudity.

Finally saw Ghost in the Shell '95 last night. It was good. Contrary to what this thread brought me to believe, the plot wasn't hard to follow at all. Also, contrary to what fanboys would have you believe, Kusanagi is not, like, some 'empowered' ray of sunshine.

One of the major factors of GITS is Kusanagi getting naked a lot, if you want to blame anyone for making that a thing, you can tell it to Shirow Masamune. He made sexy Motoko one of the selling points in the manga (as well as the censored e-sex panels), everyone else who adapted it just went along with it.

and he drew creepy cowgirl porn, so there's that.

People have very little understanding of what exploitation is, and so get upset at seeing a breast, like the solution is to cover up breasts and then capitalism will function as it should.

Of course you then have the equally-dumb counterargument about freeing the nipple from patriarchal repression or whatever.

The telling point with this series of images is that the liberal-progressive GIRL POWER headline of the first image is inextricably linked to the softcore-pornographic qualities of the last. You cannot have the one without the other. If you're to ask which one is exploitative, the truth is that they both are.

Oh believe me, I am very very well aware. I'm not concerned about them really sexualizing the Major (nor do I care, nor does the character herself ever care) even though I don't think that's going to happen with a mass market action movie. I'm just commenting that they're toning it down in the advertising compared to what's come before in the GITS universe.
