My grandad died after two and a half years of slowly drowning in his own fluids (emphesyma); at the end, I wasn't sad. He was released from a world of pain, as was my late grandmother (who sat by his side through all of it) and their children (my mum/uncle). I said goodbye a few days before he left, and that was when I was sad. The aforementioned grandmother passed after two years of slowly losing her mind to the point where she couldn't even remember who I was at the end. I wasn't sad then either; she was so far gone it didn't matter to her (and she was so confused and upset the whole time, knowing that something was wrong but not quite being able to work out what, that she can't have been enjoying herself either). My mum and uncle were released from their world of suffering, mum was so stressed and upset by the whole situation that she hadn't gotten a decent night's sleep in nine months. I can't imagine what it's like to look your mother in the eye and have no idea if she even knows who you are anymore, and I am not looking forward to when it happens to me. My dad's father died after yet another years-long struggle against the inexorable clock of time, and towards the end he told all of us that he was done living like this and he wanted to move on. If we could have given him a life worth living, that would have been amazing, but we couldn't, and I can't bring myself to be upset that his suffering (and, again, the suffering of all those around him) was brought to an end quietly and painlessly on his own terms. These people were all 80+ and had been through so much. I said my goodbyes long before the funerals. My dad's closest friend, much younger, in his 50s, died two months after discovering he had massive tumors throughout his entire nervous system. No advanced warning, just a headache that wouldn't go away for a week followed by an MRI and a diagnosis of "there's nothing we can do, we're so sorry". By the end, he could barely talk, he could barely move one arm, he expressed that he didn't want to live like this, and passed in his sleep. For me, the funeral is never the sad thing. The sadness of those the departed held dear is heartbreaking and I'm not going to pretend I'm some kind of emotionless robot or that I didn't cry or I wasn't upset. But the way I see it, the death is often not the sad thing. What lead to the death, and the effects it has on those we leave behind, are the sad things. I was ready for the deaths. I was ready for the funerals. I wasn't ready for the words of those who spoke, especially not my father's friend's loved ones. No parent should have to outlive their child. But in every case, I'd said goodbye long before the funeral. If that makes me seriously hosed up, well, what else is new? Adiabatic posted:oh huh check that out Well hello there fearless leader! Getting in on DOGGECHAT: Those are our two dog-monkeys. On the left is Riley, who is a ~95lb purebred American Bulldog. She's a huge suck once she knows you, but standoffish (loudly standoffish as only big bullies can be) until then. She's brindle over white, classic pattern for the breed. We've had her since she was a puppy, and she's nearly 4 years old. On the right is Tyler, who is a ~75lb Pit mix, to the best of our knowledge. We adopted him in October of last year, about a week after a local Pit rescue ; we think he's around 2.5-3 years old, but nobody's sure. He had a plethora of health issues when we adopted him, including a bad limp that we knew was likely to mean TPLO or similar knee ligament surgery (spoiler alert: he is currently recovering from his second TPLO surgery; both knees were shot badly enough to do them right after one another). He looks pretty normal in this photo, but if you look closely, you can see that his lips are pretty messed up, and the skin around his nose looks weird. That's because it's melted. He was used as a bait dog for the first 6 months or so of his life, and apparently his owner tried pouring acid in his face to make him meaner. It didn't work. Despite having been so badly treated as a puppy, he is the friendliest, sweetest animal I've ever met. He thinks that people and dogs are equally awesome and just wants to lick, cuddle, and play with everyone (and everydog) he meets. Not pictured: our ~10lb black catte who is a sweetheart and is the boss of the dogs. Yu-Gi-Ho! posted:Welp, friend's funeral is Thursday. Sorry, dude. Go find a dog to cuddle. Seriously.

I mean, I'm okay with this. Don't see why we can't have TWO mods, though? (I mean IOC as well, plz don't ban me). Catte update: gave him an IV because why not, got him some fluids, and have been syringe-feeding him formula every few hours. 5-10ml at most at once to prevent vomiting. We'll see. Seat Safety Switch posted:Poor dog. Please give him some cuddles and treats for me. We spoil the living hell out of him. He is currently curled up against my back (his head is in the small of my back, and he's curled up between me and the back of the couch) with a flannel blanket over him, snoring madly. He is a very happy animal now, and I feel incredibly lucky that we're in a position to give him the best life we can, which he richly deserves. Once he's done recovering from this surgery, he'll be better than new - the rest of his health issues are already dealt with, thankfully, and no other long-term issues of which we're aware. At least his chronic issues were easily dealt with simply by throwing money at them. We don't have kids, so paying $firstYearOfCollege for dog surgery was actually an option for us (PS gently caress pet insurance for saying that knee issues are bilateral and therefore both knees were pre-existing conditions. Assholes). That being said, I will absolutely give him some cuddles and treats for you, though. Any excuse is a good excuse.

Seat Safety Switch posted:Poor dog. Please give him some cuddles and treats for me. "gently caress the PO" applies to both bad car owners and dog owners. I volunteer at our local shelter every now and then, and when you hear the story of an abused animal it's always a weird mix of this hopeless, doomed feeling where you think humanity has no hope while simultaneously thinking about how far you could shove a traffic cone up the abuser's rear end. Then you see said dogs disappear and hear they were adopted, and all is well again. Hell yes for no-kill shelters.

Ripoff posted:"gently caress the PO" applies to both bad car owners and dogs. S'funny, I was thinking exactly that as I was typing the post. Yes, gently caress the PO, indeed. And that feeling of the floor opening underneath you when you hear about what somebody did to an animal is really awful - I'm glad that I have at least made it past the sheer animal rage, and now absolutely pity anybody who hurts an animal. How broken must they be? How awful must their lives be that it seems like an option? How incapable of feeling love? Hug your pets, folks. And your families. And your friends.
