I'm new to the game, and enjoying the individual elements of the game- but the campaign and what I should be doing is leaving me a little confused. I'm playing as Empire- should I be conquering humans? Or trying to get them to form alliances/confederations with me? With Empire I would try to take Marienberg as soon as you can after clearing out secessionists, maybe Nuln as well. Some take too long to confederate together, and I'm pretty sure the Empire campaign is designed to be a political clusterfuck. Also watch out for Beastmen raiding you.

Check the diplomacy screen, some of the minor human factions have a trait that makes them want to confederate with a stronger partner. Others will start to dislike you as you grow.
Seems pretty clear cut what to do... do trade deals and ally with the good guys, smash the rebel faction, conquer some angry ones or neutrals, confederate. Then whatever you prefer, west for fantasy France or East to fight vampires and Russians.

Empire has sorta slowly turned into hard mode. But generally, the answer is 'it depends'. Go check out the diplomacy screen, see who likes whom. Leave alone/ally with humans with the Underdog trait, and pick on the ones with the Imperial Distrust trait. At lower difficulties it's less unforgiving, but you still generally wanna pick a side and stick with it.

In addition to what everyone else has said, forming alliances and confederations with the other Empire factions will become almost pitifully easy once Chaos is rampant, generally you just want to conquer some nearby assholes who are important to your short term goals while trying not to piss everyone else off too much. Marienburg in particular has a stupidly wealthy capital and should be one of your first targets after uniting Reikland.

Yeah Marienberg has a special port that when fully upgraded gives 2,000g a turn. Nuln has the Nuln Gunnery school which gives bonus veterancy to artillery built there.

You get a fair amount of freedom in how you proceed, especially at the Empire. Conquering other imperial factions is totally fine (and difficult to avoid, really), but you should be careful not to antagonise all of them by attacking the wrong people; try to go after the unpopular ones. Confederating will give you all their cities, armies, and characters for free (there is a diplomatic and public-order debuff whenever you confederate, but it's insignificant); you should confederate IF POSSIBLE, but don't spend too much time pursuing a confederation. Once Chaos shows up, everyone else gets pretty big diplo buffs with each other, and it gets really easy to join up with whoever's left.

You can't confederate with non-imperial factions (Kislev, the Bretonian kingdoms, the countries south of the mountains). Going west into Bretonia used to be a great way to get safe, wealthy territory, but the addition of the wood elves may have changed this. Kislev is best left alone, unless your campaign is going REALLY well; they tend to die once Chaos shows up, and it's best to let the AI take those losses. You can't occupy the mountain/badlands territories; those are for orcs and dwarves. You should generally try to have good relations with the dwarves so you can just ignore those territories (the dwarves generally roll over the orcs).

Your main adversaries are the Vampire Counts, who start at the other end of the empire and are encouraged to compete for the same territory as you. Some people recommend you beeline for them and try to crush them while they're still weak, but this isn't essential. Just be mindful that you will need to have a showdown with them at some point, and their corruption is a pain to clear out.

Also I would recommend Karl Franz for your first game. His questline includes beating up a bunch of orc armies; this task is easier if you DON'T burn down that one orc hold near to Altdorf.

Click on the armies flag with the Hero selected, it should bring up a prompt to join the army. Make sure you have room as well since they take up a unit slot.

That reminds me, do people normally build up the unit tech tree in multiple provinces, or just in their capital? It seems redundant to me but I guess you might want to be able to reinforce away from home without paying global recruitment costs?

Danann

I prefer to centralize all the unit production into one province so that I can pump out gold 3 chevron units by the dozen. For popping out armies in two-three turns, I combine global recruitment with local recruitment. Global recruit the staple infantry units and local recruit the specialist/high tier infantry, artillery, and cavalry since staple infantry can eat the global recruitment turn cost better than every other unit.

I would say use global recruitment for far-away garrisons but regiments of renown make for better "oh poo poo" reinforcements and without the global recruitment mod it takes forever to even get random spearmen/warriors ready to fight.

Use your judgement, You don't need troop producing buildings in every province, but it is good to build some near significant fronts. You can always tear them down for a chunk of the construction cost later. If a location has significant fighting, and is several turns of force marching away from a province with military buildings, then start building some closer.

You want to bring 1 or 2 more provinces online for unit recruitment by the late game. The doubled recruitment time of using global recruitment becomes increasingly painful as the game goes on and base recruitment time increases. It's annoying when your spending 2 turns recruiting a 1 turn unit, it's debilitating when it becomes 4 or 6 turns. 6 turns is a goddamn eternity.

For Empire/VC, I always make my secondary Talabecland since it's so goddamn huge it covers a significant portion of the map by itself and I would need some of those buildings anyway if I want Knights of the Blazing Sun

It depends on the race. Dwarves have an annoyingly high number of units that need buildings which require a tier 4 city, so it's likely you'll spread them out over two provinces. Theres a province to the south which gets both an arsenal (bonus veterancy for infantry) and a powder works (bonus veterancy/discount for gunpowder units) so sometimes I'll transfer infantry production down there to crank out high veterancy cheap infantry late game.

With Empire I have Reikland be my infantry/cavalry Center and Nuln for artillery to make use of special veterancy buildings.

madmac
Jun 22, 2010
For Empire in particular almost every province has their own specialty. Reikland has the special Wizard School, Nuln has the best artillery building, Marienburg has their insane port,Talabecland has Knights of the Blazing Sun, Middenheim has the Temple of Ulric that lets you pump out level 13+ Warrior Priests and Witch Hunters, ect. (Really nice for Volkmar especially, with skills+Middenhelm he can crank out level 20 Warrior Priests if he wants.) Dwarves also have a lot of fantastic special buildings scattered around.

OTOH, most of the Greenskin special buildings are blah except diamond mines and the infantry (iron) one, and Vampires aren't really hurting for any unique buildings outside of Sylvania. Chaos and Beastmen are hordes, and Wood Elves only build up at home except when nabbing those other race capitals for the dragon garrisons.

For the most part hunting down awesome unique buildings is an Empire/Dwarf and probably Brettonian thing.

Yes in fact you can get a nice bonus if you confederate with someone that controls a lot of territories. Some quests and legendary lord unlocks also require you to control X number of territories l/provinces and these can trigger via confederation.

When you confederate a faction you get their provinces, their armies, and even their lords/legendary lords. You don't lose anything at all through confederation except a temporary public order malus and the inability to confederate again for a bit.

As for the province bonuses, those are just buildings that can only be built in certain cities/towns, so you get those for owning a province no matter what.

Yes. How you gain control doesn't matter, only that the entire province is under your control. Vassals also count and will unlock the complete province effects even though you don't technically own their provinces.

Fairly sure that no, it will not.

e: vvvvv Reikland/Nuln are okay because taking one extra turn to get some decent veterancy buffs isn't bad. Reikland and Middenheim are fine because you're going to produce agents from them. Talabecland is also not a problem if you're fighting that way because it makes for a really useful buffer state so you're going to do a lot of recruiting at the front, plus they're unique units. I wouldn't bother if I was waging a war south, though. Mt Gunbad, on the other hand, doesn't add too much value to dwarven armies in return for making travel time a lot worse. vvvvv

I am pretty sure this only applies to the province and not globally, which is why I honestly can't be assed to min-max unit production. I am not going to waste turns moving armies around to get the most benefits, and by the time I have that luxury (either a dedicated Lord for recruitment only, or burning turns on travel when raising an army), the bonuses will make little to no difference.

I beg someone to correct me if I'm wrong though because I'm deliberately ignore those buildings at the moment.

e: I'm currently playing Vampire Counts so I don't believe there are any unique units for unique unit bonus buildings, just generic stuff like -25% recruitment cost and +2 chevs.

Mount Gunbad is totally worth it because in addition to getting 6 chevron artillery you also get money AND you can build a gold mine in addition. It's not too hard to take early on and gives you a nice leg up financially.

You can just put three of the agents such as Empire Captains or Dwarf Thanes with the skill that has the +xp rank maxed out in the same region and you'll be getting gold chevron units since the skill stacks.

It also stacks with buildings and technology too so blue chevron units are easily within reach until you can get three leveled up.

Can I point out how retarded the whole Local Region/Province thing is? Especially coming out of Shogun 2, this is just an awful mess of mechanics. If you have a Wizard agent in a unified Reikland and you want to do Planning to make buildings cheaper to build in, say, Grunburg to cheaply fast-track getting nicer Outriders in the province, the wizard's action affects the Local Region, ergo he better not be a millimetre over the dividing line between Altdorf and Grunburg, which is now invisible to you because you unified the province; or else you're giving cheaper building to the wrong part of the Province. :psyduck:

Actually, I'm pretty sure they affect the entire province. All "regional" boni do, I think. (Also, if you zoom in or select one of the settlements, not sure which, you can still see the border between settlement areas.)

ZearothK posted:

The unique buildings you only get in one place all have global bonuses of some sort IIRC. There's also bonus buildings with local buffs to recruitment that can be built in settlements with certain trade resources, but aren't unique to one specific settlement. Like, the Nuln Gunnery School can only be built in Nuln and gives global boni. A master swordsmith or whatever it's called can be built by Empire factions in any settlement with the iron resource and gives a bonus only to local recruitment done in that province.

For reference, unique buildings I can remember:
Empire: College in Altdorf, Nuln Gunnery School, Knights Panther chapterhouse in Carroburg, Knights of the Blazing Sun in IIRC Averheim, Temple of Ulric in Middenheim, special ports in Marienburg and Erengrad, Palace in Kislev, Tourney grounds in Couronne and special wine market in a bret harbor capital (Bordeleux?)
VC: College in Altdorf, Palace in Kislev, special harbors in Marienburg and Erengrad
Dwarfs: Throne Room in Kharaz-a-Kharak, special Slayer Shrine in Kharak Kadrin, special mine in Mount Gunbad
Orks: Nothing, except Savage Orc recritment chains in the southern Badlands
Wood Elves: Special outposts in main race capitals IIRC
