Any valuation metric that doesn't look at sports franchises in a similar manner to equities is a flawed one. They are securities that can appreciate in value independent of the dividends they pay. The spin the owners do is hilarious but really effective because we don't teach financial literacy in schools.

ehh, projecting future sale as a reason to go into long-term debt is a bad way to run a business. If you care about the NBA, you don't want teams to do that too much, otherwise contraction is inevitable (and that would really, really suck).

Cavs are clearly making decisions apart from money making, which is fine. Plus I suspect the goodwill they are creating now will carry over when their cost is lower (assuming no more comic sans).

Owners are doing just fine though, don't shed any tears their way.

"Still"? He never was. He's been decent this season, same as in OKC.

What else does Toronto have to move to get another piece this year? Their higher draft pick? With 1 more decent player they might be able to take 2 games from the Cavs and call it a successful season.

Also, pro-level thread name change.

Yeah. That was pretty much my point said less flippantly. Obviously you don't want years and years of taking losses. But that was being bandied about as a excuse earlier this year...

Also keep in mind that's just basketball income. Doesn't Gilbert own the stadium. And a bunch of other property in the area that directly benefits from the team being good.

a literal thing you think.

this is a great trade and the raps really should have no problem paying the tax going forward. MLSE could heat the ACC with burning money and still make a killing.

I liked Ross this year but I think he's one player they can go forward without. They are flush with outside scoring already .

It's probably because the owner and his wife are busy trying to privatize public schools so they can extract profits and inject weird religious poo poo into everyones lives and also busy running their pyramid scheme that they got legalized through millions in campaign contributions, herbalife style

They're hosed

That's a really good trade for Toronto if they want to solidify themselves as number 2 in the east for a few years. Terrence Ross and the 24th or so pick?

So in the end Orlando traded Sabonis Jr, Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova to get Terrence Ross and a late first round pick.
That's a loss but it doesn't look horrible. They're going nowhere.

A couple of things:

1. It took deliberate separation of asset classes and revenue streams to bandy this stat out there. In any measure of fair auditing they still generated positive earnings. Their number wouldn't hold up to scrutiny in court if it came to that.

2. This completely ignores the reality that sports franchises do not get valued by traditional metrics. They are almost unique in that their price is not reflected by future cash flows. Traditional corporate finance metrics are not used in industry for them.

oh poo poo i didn't even see that the Cavs dealt for Derrick Williams. he was pretty good in the rotation for the Knicks last year, and being on a LeBron team should keep him playing to his best potential. (then again, Dion was on a LeBron team and we all see how that worked out)

Well, I guess Orlando did get the draft pick and young talent they asked for, technically.

It's really unfortunate that Rudy Gay tore his Achilles. Not just because it sucks for Rudy but also because he was a great target for a borderline team feeling frisky. Now we have to hope someone thinks Darren Collison or Kosta Koufos is the piece that puts them over the top
