Pick a damage type. Get as many beams of that damage type as you can fit on your ship.
Use the iconian 4-piece space set.
Fill your tac slots with consoles that boost your chosen damage type (preferably the spire ones if you can get them).
Fill your sci console slots with the embassy consoles which proc plasma explosions. Which particular type and +Th or -Th doesn't matter much, you pretty much just want them for the plasma proc.
Put a plasmonic leech in one of your eng console slots (they're only a few mill on the exchange, if you're too poor to afford that ask in chat).
Get the highest level Beam: Fire at Will your ship can run (two copies), and then add some attack patterns.
Get Emergency Power to Weapons (two copies) and Shields (two copies if you can fit) in your eng boff slots.
Right-click your weapon icons to set them to auto-fire.
Set up a macro for your boff abilities and hammer it often enough that your abilities are up as much as possible.

There, you now have a basic build that will destroy all story content and is perfectly capable of running advanced STFs - you'll probably out-DPS some pubbies like this. Once that's done, you can start looking at more advanced stuff like the various cooldown reduction techniques, and which equipment is best to upgrade.

There's a wiki article alllllll about skill specs.

It was also written before strategist specialization existed (according to ingame chat), which is probably a better secondary than pilot.

Also, since the wiki page doesn't suggest anything for the passive unlocks, check out https://www.sto-league.com/skilltree-suggestion/

A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.
Haven't played since beta which was so dogshit I expected the whole game to be wiped out of existence shortly. Seven years later I see that it not only somehow still exists but they added ToS stuff. Created a character a few days ago and it turns out the game is now "ok" and occasionally even "kind of fun". That just happens to be my bar for Star Trek games!

Anyway, could I get wiki access for CodexOccultus?

And maybe a TheNextGooneration invite for CodexOccultus@CodexOccultus?

No it wasn't. It was written with a slight bias against tanking and high-aggro play, because it was aimed at newer players who might not have access to Improved Feedback Pulse and Attack Pattern Delta Prime, which are what make tanking really shine.

Whether Strategist is better than Pilot will depend a lot on your play style and build.

I'm in no danger of buying lockboxes, but I can already see how the extra traits, sets, and universal consoles can easily draw a person into buying ships they don't even want to use. Pretty sneaky.

Yup. Why just buy the Chronos when you can get the three pack and run the console set? And on it goes.

With that said, the current 'meta' reliably uses about five or six traits, so you can limit the damage if you do your research.

And I ALMOST fell for it today too! I bought the Morrigu but noticed the battlecruiser pack and considered it. Had I not already bought a smaller zen pack I might have done it too.

Asimo

Honestly, while the ships are overpriced, buying one every few months isn't that big a deal. I mean one every two months is about equivalent to a subscription fee, and if you're actually enjoying the game a lot then that isn't really a big deal.

The real gotcha is, yeah, the ludicrously expensive 3/9 packs with a bunch of redundancy, the gambleboxes with lovely odds, and that sort of stuff.
Siiigh. I stopped grabbing new ships off the exchange because I have enough - even T6 - that it just feels unnecessary and redundant, and also because I'm running out of space dollars, but I always liked the hideous battlecruiser and I always felt it was massively underrated, and its only real weakness was not being T6. So time to blow 200-300m I guess. :geno:

Like Asimo says, the mega packs are usually a trap. On the other hand, the Morrigu/Arbiter/Mogh three pack is a decent purchase if you know you want to run serious ships on all three factions - Emergency Weapon Cycle is one of the anointed meta traits.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah, that's either the only or one of a handful of packs that's worth the cost. Although that assumes you'd actually play a character on all three factions, and in the current game why the hell would you bother? :effort:

I just want to have fun at a reasonably effective level so I passed on the bundle. Besides, three ships that all sound kind of the same sounds boring to me anyway. If I ever do buy another ship, it would likely be something that plays a lot differently like a science ship, speedy escort, or carrier or something. This ship and the EC cap removal are the only things I've purchased so far.

Hurrah, the T6 Romulan borg battlecruiser has a shape!

I always liked the look of the Destroyer and kinda wanted one, but Destroyers are so... pointless. Yay, it's a heavy escort without the turn. Although it does have gratuitous sensor analysis now...

The 31st century ship pack is actually one of the few ship sets that isn't a trap. Chronos and Eternal are a solid pair of ships, and the Ouroboros isn't bad either but Raiders can be a bit squishy for PvE play. They're cross-faction, have strong admiralty cards, and they have a real strong specialization and gimmick in the Temp Ops powers and ship ability. Depending on if you like the 29th century ship aesthetic and its evolution into the 31st century ship aesthetic they look drat good too.

Better one would be the Flagship bundle or the dreadnought bundle.

Back in the day the Romulan expansion pack of "all the warbirds" was a pretty good deal. Not now though since T6 happened and I doubt anyone would buy it now.

As soon as the Scimitar pack was out there was no point to buying the Legacy of Romulus pack outside maybe getting it on deep discount due to the 30 keys. Just get the Valdore by itself for the shield heal console and that's all you need from it.

The T6 variants of the old lockbox ships have been in the infinity packs so far, I can't imagine these being any different. Even if that means the console version gets to play around with them for a few months before they hit the PC.

I can't see how they could do a T6 sci ship when the Paradox is so superior whilst still having Comm Sci and Sensor Analysis and Secondary deflector.

Well, give it temporal ship spec. Even so, you'd be losing a weapon slot and hanger bay.
