I think the only way to actually get a suspension you deserve is to attack a ref. Good job Antoine.

I watched that gif like ten times studying every other player on the ice and could not figure out what the big deal was. I didn't even look at Ducks' center because all he did was lose the face off and didn't get near anybody else. The idea that somebody might be so stupid to slash the loving ref didn't even register as a possibility until it was pointed out to me.

As much as we give refs poo poo, they do have to put up with people like that. They're on the ice too, and yeah, they get battered and bruised, usually unintentionally.

Well then it was nice of Vermette to do something so atrociously stupid. Very selfless of him.

I dunno about that but he's going to get absolutely stomped. Abuse of Officials is an automatic 10 game suspension to start, and there's virtually no argument that can be made that Vermette didn't fully intend to hit the ref in retaliation for the missed faceoff.

Between Vermette and Nyquist we gonna see some long-rear end suspensions handed out in the next few days.

I spent a good 30 seconds looking for someone falling or twisting in a painful way then it occurred to look at the one guy standing still doing apparently nothing. Except it wasnt nothing he was doing.

The players were lined up offset from the faceoff dot for some reason and the ref dropped the puck anyways.. seems like a bad faceoff to me. Guess that made Vermette mad and he wanted an unpaid vacation.

No, the centres wanted to line up offset. They both put their sticks on the ice signalling that they were ready but Vermette pulled back for some reason. The linesman will generally not drop the puck in that situation but it's not a rule.

I think 10 games is fine. It is not like he destroyed the ref like Wideman did. It was incredibly stupid and no doubt intentional, but it strikes me as the kind of action that the minimum exists for. Unless they want to make an example of him because they cowed away from the message they wanted to send with Wideman, I don't see anything longer being justified.

Also, did I mention how amazingly dumb this was?

Also that is not even the most egregious example of the "fall over and slide into no man's land" strategy the Canucks have employed this year. I present Erik Gudbranson and Nikita Tryamkin's masterpiece from back in November:

To add to everyone's least favourite list, Mike Comrie is the NHL's latest accused rapist.

quote:

Law enforcement sources tell us the woman claims she met up with Comrie at a bar Saturday night and went back to his West L.A. condo. She claims he raped her multiple times.
The woman says she almost immediately went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center nearby, and a rape kit was administered.
Sources connected with Comrie say he's known the woman for a long time and acknowledges he had sex with her, but insists she gave full consent. The sources also say the encounter was a 3-way and the other woman has not filed any complaint.

The Blue Jackets have tried to remind him that he's still part of the organization. Assistant general manager Bill Zito has taken him to Cleveland to watch the minor-league Monsters play, and the organization has noted that Clarkson's keen eye could lead to him having a hockey operations role someday.

They've gone big time with the "recent NHL players/alumni in the organization" thing in recent years. Freddy Modin, Chris Clark, Jody Shelley, Blake Geoffrion, and Jarkko Ruutu all have roles with the team and Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre has been an ambassador and occasional guest color analyst on radio broadcasts (Modin did radio Monday night, too). They haven't given Vinny Prospal the job he was promised yet, but Clarkson could fit in.
